  • With the unparalleled rate of aging and rapid modernization, Korean society faces the situation in which it has to increase the supply of elderly care services dramatically in the near future. Among these services, nursing homes are considered as an essential alternative provision because Korea can no longer rely on traditional familism nor medical facilities for the care of her older population. It is necessary, therefore, to prepare a future plan for the delivery of nursing homes in Korea. This paper has identified elderly care context and analyzed elderly care facilities of Korea in the point of supply and utilization rate of nursing homes according to the region and type of facilities. On the bases of this analysis, the delivery planning of nursing homes in Korea has been proposed in order to increase welfare status of older people and efficient utilization of health care resources.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest optimum size of residents' bedrooms in nursing homes. Bedroom is an essential part of nursing homes because nursing home residents spend most of their times in bedrooms and occupy the largest part of facility area. Therefore it is necessary to set an adequate standard related to resident room area in nursing facilities, which have a great effect on planning longterm care facilities for the elderly. The body dimensions of elderly people and care givers have been collected from the previous study. Based on the body dimensions data, the behaviors of elderly as well as care givers have been analysed. The minimum areas-exclusive of toilets, closets, vestibules and so on - have been proposed from the results of the behavior analysis.

  • Since elderly welfare centers were designated as leisure facilities for elders by the Welfare of the Age Act enacted in 1981, they have been built in cities and provinces, but services provided by the facilities have not been diverse. Furthermore, thanks to the full enforcement of the local autonomy system, the number of elderly welfare centers is increasing rapidly. In the Honam area, 36 elderly welfare centers were in operation in 2005, but most of them do not reflect the characteristics of the aged population and the corresponding locality. Neither are there service programs nor detailed plans for spatial structure or layout for such sonics programs. Therefore, this study classified program spaces and analyzed space locations in elderly welfare centers in the Honam area, and investigated the spatial layout of each facility including counseling spaces, medical and rehabilitative spaces, social education spaces, welfare spaces and management spaces. The ultimate purpose of this study is, based on the results of the analysis and investigation, to present basic materials necessary for designing the spatial structure of elderly welfare centers that satisfies various services in consideration of the local characteristics of the Honam area.

The second step was case study of four churches in Suwon City area. The potential for social welfare space use for elders was examined. • Like all other European countries, as a result of gradual industrialization, Germany is just before the start of new social system; the so-called 'aged society'. Over half of the century, Germany focused their welfare system on facilities. However, with the start of the new 'aged society', they introduced a new concept which consists mainly on home care and community care. These new concepts resulted from the general idea that even elderly have the right to live an independent quality life. Therefore, to satisfy the elderly with such life it has been seen as necessary not only to offer them efficient protection but to introduce an economical welfare system and facility scheme. The regional integration plan for welfare is one of the open schemes in which the lifestyle of the elderly are seen as the whole. Participated by several members and specialists of all social standings, necessary facilities are planned. By looking into a project example carried out in Germany, this study is aimed to increase the quality of the elderly welfare system and facility construction plan.
