  • The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship among the depression, physical condition, daily living activities, and sleep state among old people at elderly care facilities. The subjects include old people aged 65 or older residing at an elderly care facility. At elderly care facilities, the depression of old people was related with the state of vision, mastication ability, quality of sleep, and sleep state. The degree of relation was high in the group with a poor vision, the one with a bad condition of teeth, the one that considered their quality of sleep to be poor, and the one with somnipathy. Their depression had negative correlations with age and positive ones with mastication ability and assessment of quality of sleep. At elderly care facilities, the depression of old people was highly connected with the state of vision, mastication ability, sleep state, and hearing ability. In short, the depression of old people at elderly care facilities is highly connected to the health state perceived individually. The findings point to the importance of close interest in individual health state and management of old people in poor vision, mastication ability in healthcare and nursing intervention.

  • This study was a descriptive study to investigate factors affecting quality of life in the Korean elders with diabetes mellitus. A secondary data analysis was conducted using the data of "The Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2008." The survey included 9774 adults aged over 64 years with diabetes mellitus and 226 samples were used for this study. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 12.0 program and descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations, and multiple regression analyses were performed. Correlation analysis showed that quality of life was associated with the amount of alcohol intake, the level of stress awareness, walking time, and suicidal thoughts. The amount of alcohol intake, the level of stress awareness, walking time, and suicidal thoughts accounted for 34.5% of quality of life. These findings suggest that nursing researchers need to consider age, suicidal thoughts, and drinking as important factors affecting quality of life of Korean elders with diabetes mellitus and nursing intervention focusing on the issues needs to be developed.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors associated with subjective age among community-dwelling older adults in South Korea. Cross-sectional analyses were performed on 8,040 older adults aged 65 years and over from the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. We used univariable analysis and multivariable analysis by the logistic regression test. The significant factors associated with subjective age in older adults were gender, education level, living arrangements, limitation of instrumental activities of daily living, number of chronic diseases, perceived health status, depression, and current economic activity. Based on the results of this study, nursing intervention will be needed to lower subjective age. This study may contribute to the older adults to have a healthy and successful old age.

Results: There were significant differences of health promotion behaviors between elderly women living alone and elderly women in group homes (t=15.77, p<.001). In addition, there were significant differences of safety consciousness between elderly women living alone and elderly women in group homes (t=21.42, p<.001). Conclusion: Since the safety consciousness and health promotion behaviors of the elderly in group homes are significantly higher than that of the elderly living alone, various programs should be developed to improve the safety consciousness and health promotion behaviors in the elderly living alone. Based on local government' acts, continuous support and attention is needed that elderly women in group homes can maintain a healthy life.
