  • This study describes visiting caregivers' perceptions and reporting of elder abuse. From January 13 to February 10, 2014, data were collected from 249 visiting caregivers working at homes by using a structured questionnaire. The caregivers' perceptions of abuse were high overall. Physical abuse was the most common type, followed by financial, verbal, negligence, and emotional abuse. Most visitors recognized that it is important to require reporting for the prevention of elder abuse, but most of them had no experience with reporting abuse, and the agencies that they knew were mostly the police. A majority of the visiting caregivers had attended an elder abuse program and recognized the importance of such programs. The caregivers hoped that the programs would have specific examples of how to deal with elder abuse and family counseling methods, and other practical content for their work. Programs should focus on coping with individual cases, proper counseling methods, and awareness of elder abuse.

  • This research aimed to empirically investigate the effects of satisfaction in Elderly Care Facilities (ECF) and daily stresses of aged people on their depression and self-esteem. Subjects were 271 visitors to 8 ECFs located in Central Korea including Seoul. The data was collected by the survey on them, conducted from March 3 to August 25, 2013. By analyzing the data, we found that the satisfaction with service utilization in ECF can reduce depression, while the satisfaction with medical rehabilitation service may increase depression and that the satisfaction with physical environment can reduce self-esteem. Also, the results showed that the stress related to family relationship has a positive effect on depression and a negative effect on self-esteem. and that the stress concerning residential environment can decrease self-esteem. Depression and self-esteem of the elderly can be predicted by satisfaction in ECFs, but not better than by their daily stresses. Among the predictors of depression and self-esteem, in this study, stress concerning family relationship is the most significant and the strongest.

The subjects of the study are 485 people aged 65 or above who use a comprehensive social welfare center. First, in the effect of stress on depression of elderly people, family issues, health issues, economic issues, and feeling of loss were found to be significant. Second, in the impact of self-respect in the elderly on their depression, family issues, economic issues, and feeling of loss were found to have a mediating effect on depression, but not with health issues. Third, in the impact of social support to the elderly on the relationship between their stress and depression, the moderating effect of social support on depression was found to have a negative value. Based on these findings, the study suggests practical implications on social welfare in reducing depression experienced by the elderly.

First, in the age of Kim Il Sung showed the state-led, market absence, family supplementation and in the age of Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un showed the state diminishment, market appearance, family supplementation in terms of welfare provisions. Second, there is disparity between institution and reality because the law don't prescribe the responsibility of market provisions for the people but the elderly should have made a living in the market since the early 1990s. The situation of 'the weaken state and strengthened market' in the age of Kim Jong Il have still continued in the age of Kim Jong Un. The formal income security for the elderly need to return to the former condition.

  • Traditionally, caring for young children and the elderly has been largely assumed and practiced intensively within the family in Korea. The Korean government established residual protection systems for the elderly as well as children whose needs could not be met by their family members alone. However, in the 21st century, a number of social forces have made it necessary to expand the state's intervention in the care provisions. The primary forces include the ageing process, low fertility, change in the women's labour market participation, changes in the family formation and dissolution, and changes in the people's perceptions of familial responsibilities regarding caring for other family members. This paper employs and further develops the idea of the care diamond conceived by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development Project in relation to the political and social economy of care and applies it to Korea's social care expansions. The analysis demonstrates that the roles of the public and the market sector, in case of child care, increased while those of the third sector decreased. Apropos of the elderly care, the role of the market expanded dramatically, followed by that of and the state and the third sector. Nonetheless, it is important to note that the fundamental characteristics of Korea's care provision for children and the elderly have remained unchanged and even strengthened where the elderly care is concerned. The bulk of personal care demand is still met within the family, particularly by female members of the household.
