Hiking trails in Mt Jiri, and Mt Halla, National Park have been examined in terms of their degrading factors. The trails are deteriorated by natural erosion processes as well as human trampling. Trail deterioration is classified into tread lowering, sidewall retreat, path widening and divergence based upon a place where erosional processes occur. Tread lowering and sidewall retreat is generally produced by natural erosion factors, whereas path widening and divergence is generated by human trampling. Rainwash is the most contributing process to tread lowering. By contrast, several processes such as rainwash, needle ice action, deflation, tree falling and animal activity play a major role in sidewall retreat according to physical conditions of a hiking trail. Path widening and divergence could be classified by a factor producing human trampling. There are lots of cases related to rainwash such as the tree root, gravel, and bedrock, exposed by a surface flow lowering a tread and the riser produced by tread scouring. A puddle of rainwater on a flat tread and a fallen tree of Abies koreana in a forest region are also major factors to cause path widening and divergence. A paved tread with stones encourages a hiker to walk out of a trail. Taking a shortcut also results in path widening and divergence without a factor giving a hiker inconvenience on a trail.

Traffic pavement markings are one of primary transportation facilities that provide drivers with various road information directly. Thus, a clear understanding of traffic pavement markings is utmost important to improve traffic safety as well as to establish a proper traffic culture. However, no past studies examined drivers' understanding of traffic pavement markings in Korea. Hence, this study investigated drivers' understanding of traffic pavement markings through an elaborated administrated survey, and analyzed the relationship between various drivers' characteristics and understanding regarding pavement marking via cross-classification table and logistic model. The analysis results show that drivers have limited understanding regarding the purpose of the markings. Specifically, the average understanding of pavement markings is 57.41%: the lowest understanding is 25.88% for yield pavement marking, and the highest understanding is 91.18% for advanced pedestrian crosswalk pavement marking. This study also revealed that the understanding of some pavement markings are somewhat influenced by user group such as drivers with suspended or revoked driver licenses, but the overall understanding of pavement markings are not significantly affected by drivers' characteristics such as gender and driving experiences at ${\alpha}$=0.05. Thus, it might be desirable for policy makers to establish pavement marking-related policies for overall drivers rather than specific drivers.

Weather is an important factor affecting roadway transportation in many aspects such as traffic flow, driver 's driving patterns, and crashes. This study focuses on the relationship between weather and road surface condition and develops a model to estimate the road surface condition using machine learning. A road surface sensor was attached to the probe vehicle to collect road surface condition classified into three categories as 'dry', 'moist' and 'wet'. Road geometry information (curvature, gradient), traffic information (link speed), weather information (rainfall, humidity, temperature, wind speed) are utilized as variables to estimate the road surface condition. A variety of machine learning algorithms examined for predicting the road surface condition, and a two - stage classification model based on 'Random forest' which has the highest accuracy was constructed. 14 days of data were used to train the model and 2 days of data were used to test the accuracy of the model. As a result, a road surface state prediction model with 81.74% accuracy was constructed. The result of this study shows the possibility of estimating the road surface condition using the existing weather and traffic information without installing new equipment or sensors.

Black ice is very difficult to recognize and reduces the friction of the road surface, causing automobile accidents. Since black ice is difficult to detect, there is a need for a system that identifies black ice in real time and warns the driver. Various studies have been conducted to prevent black ice on road surfaces, but there is a lack of research on systems that identify black ice in real time and warn drivers. In this paper, an real-time image-based analysis system was developed to identify the condition of asphalt road surface, which is widely used in Korea. For this purpose, a dataset was built for each asphalt road surface image, and then the road surface condition was identified as dry, wet, black ice, and snow using deep learning. In addition, temperature and humidity data measured on the actual road surface were used to finalize the road surface condition. When the road surface was determined to be black ice, the salt spray equipment installed on the road was automatically activated. The surface condition recognition system for the asphalt concrete pavement and black ice automatic prevention system developed in this study are expected to ensure safe driving and reduce the incidence of traffic accidents.

This study suggests a method for securing road safety by extracting the expected surface freezing section in planning a route using GIS. When planning a road construction in a mountainous area it is possible to confront surface freezing especially in the wintertime. In addition, it is required assessment data of surface freezing rates in the case of turnkey inspections of newly constructed or expanded roads. Consequently, an analysis method that can quantitatively estimate the surface freezing section and sunshine influence on each section of a road is needed. We can extract the expected surface freezing section which amounted to around 29km of the Donghae highway, with such techniques as three-dimensional modeling, sunshine simulation geographical database construction and spatial analysis using the overlay function of the GIS spatial analysis. This study can be used as a method to assess advance safety which has a direct influence on planning the blueprint that should be approved by a policy maker after efficiently understanding the expected surface freezing section in accordance with hill shade.

In the study, there has been a sharp upward trend in road maintenance cost as the expansion of road networks increases. Running a pavement management system(PMS) is indispensable for efficient and scientific maintenance of the whole road networks with limited maintenance budgets. With a PMS, a maintenance plan should be drawn up after surface conditions are precisely examined and analyzed. The majority of the present PMSs are run by the fact that experts first examine surface conditions on sites, and then enter results into systems. However, considering the actual circumstances of the present time and the increase in paved road hereafter, it is inefficient that experts examine the whole paved roads in person and long-lasting PMSs can not be kept up. As a result, after analyzing the accuracy of 3-D coordinates representing road surfaces that was decided using multi orientation and digital photogrammetry, the average of standard errors turned out to be 0.0427m on the X-axis, 0.0527m on the Y-axis and 0.1539m on the Z-axis. It was found to be good enough to be put to practical use for maps drawn on scales below 1 :1000, which are being currently made and used within the country, and GIS data.

Buses, subways, taxis, etc., called public transportation, are attached with a variety of advertisements Each public transportation is promoted and advertised to suit the environment and characteristics. Against this backdrop, the No. 1 tram project has been launched of public transportation in Korea. Unlike traditional public transportation, tram are not fast enough to use railways and are connected to ordinary roads, so advertisements and promotional materials can be applied in various methods. However, in order to minimize problems such as indiscriminate ad placement, this study examines how inside and outside of tram are attached methods of Central Europe where public transportation has developed. The surveyed attachment method proposes design guidelines for adhering Korean tram by modifying them in consideration of the features, environment and so on of the use of Korean tram. The guidelines produced are evaluated through interviews of three Busan citizens.
