This paper presents the results of thermodynamic cycle analysis and performance tests of alternative mixtures in low temperature applications. Two near-azeotropic binary mixtures R-152a/R-1270 (35:65 by wt.%) and R-290/E170 (35:65 by wt.%) are considered in this study. They have zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) and much lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) than R-404A which is an alternative of R-502. Refrigeration cycle characteristics such as cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, suction and discharge pressures and temperatures are compared to those for the baseline refrigerants (R-502 and R-404A) cycles. The performance tests are conducted at the evaporation and condensation temperatures of $5^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$, subcooling and superheating temperatures of $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. Performance comparisons between baseline and alternative refrigerants are conducted on the same cooling capacity. The system performance of newly proposed refrigerant mixtures show promising results.
In this study, lower flammability limits (LFLs) of three hydrocarbon refrigerants (R600a, R290, R1270) and two hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants (R152a, R32) and DME (RE170) are measured by the method proposed by ASTM E681-04 Standard. Flammability tests are carried out at three temperatures of $23^{\circ}C,\;60^{\circ}C\;and\;100^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity 50%. Test results show that the present data for isobutane and propane obtained at $23^{\circ}C$ are similar to those found in the literature, confirming indirectly the reliability of the present test method and facility. For propylene, R152a, and R32, LFLs found in the literature differ considerably. Especially, the deviation of LFL of propylene is more than 30% among the literature data. The present data for propylene, R152a, and R32 agree with either of the data sets available. As the temperature increases from $23^{\circ}C\;to\;100^{\circ}C$, LFLs of all refrigerants tested decrease. LFLs of most refrigerants tested in this study at $60^{\circ}C$ decrease by $0.1{\sim}0.3%$ as compared to those at $23^{\circ}C$. Also LFLs of most refrigerants tested in this study at $100^{\circ}C$ decrease by $0.1{\sim}0.3%$ as compared to those at $60^{\circ}C$.
In this study, performance of 2 pure hydrocarbons and 7 mixtures was measured in an attempt to substitute HCFC22 used in air-conditioners and heat pumps. The mixtures were composed of R1270 (propylene), R290 (propane), HFC152a, and RE170 (Dimethyl ether, DME). The pure and mixed refrigerants tested have GWPs of $3{\sim}58$ as compared to that of $CO_2$ and the mixtures are all near-azeotropic showing the gliding temperature difference (GTD) of less than $0.6^{\circ}C$. Thermodynamic cycle analysis was carried out to determine the optimum compositions and actual tests were performed in a laboratory heat pump test bench at the evaporation and condensation temperatures of 7.5 and $45.1^{\circ}C$ respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these mixtures is up to 5.7% higher than that of HCFC22. While propane showed 11.5% reduction in capacity, most of the fluids tested had the similar capacity to that of HCFC22. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $11{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 55% as compared to HCFC22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for. residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.
Experiments on the performance of refrigeration system using alternatives to R12 are carried out. The condenser and the evaporator are concentric-tube heat exchangers of counter-flow type and the compressor is driven by a variable speed motor. In this study, R134a, R152a, R22/142b(50 : 50 by mass) are adopted as alternatives to R12. Tests are performed by varying the inlet and outlet temperatures of secondary fluids of evaporator and condenser under the condition of constant compressor speed, degree of superheating and degree of subcooling. Results show that R134a has refrigeration capacity close to that of R12 and requires the greatest compressor power compared with that of others. And the system using R152a shows the best performance from the viewpoint of refrigeration capacity, compressor power and coefficient of performance. R22/142b is superior to R12 in the above points.
This research describes the application of hydrocarbon refrigerants for heat pump system which is needed for fish farm. Tested refrigerants are HCFC-22 and hydrocarbon refrigerants(CARE 50 and ASR-20). CARE 50 is mixture of R-290 and R-170, and ASR-20 is mixture of R-152a, R-290 and other additives. Heat pump consist of shell and tube heat exchanger, scroll compressor, expansion valve and accumulator. Manual expansion valve is used for testing of wide range evaporating temperature. Hydrocarbon refrigerants show a good performance as an alternative for HCFC-22 in the range of evaporating temperature from $-6^{\circ}C$ to $6^{\circ}C$.
In this study, thermodynamic performance of R430A is examined both numerically and experimentally in an effort to replace HFC134a used in the refrigeration system of domestic water purifiers. Even though HFC134a is used predominantly in such a system these days, it needs to be phased out in the near future in Europe and most of the developed countries due to its high global warming potential. To solve this problem, cycle simulation and experimental measurements are carried out with a new refrigerant mixture of 76%R152a124% R600a using actual domestic water purifiers. This mixture is numbered and listed as R430A by ASHRAE recently. Test results show that the system performance with R430A is greatly influenced by the amount of charge due to the small internal volume of the refrigeration system of the domestic water purifiers. With the optimum amount of charge of 21 to 22 grams, about 50% of HFC134a, the energy consumption of R430A is 13.4% lower than that of HFC 134a. The compressor dome and discharge temperatures and condenser center temperature of R430A are very similar to those of HFC134a at the optimum charge. Overall, R430A, a new long term environmentally safe refrigerant, is a good alternative for HFC134a requiring little change in the refrigeration system of the domestic water purifiers.
A theoretical cycle analysis has been performed for a basic heat pump, charged with non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures, R22/R114 and R13B1/R152a. At first, a procedure is introduced to calculate thermodynamic properties simply and correctly, and the advantages of using refrigerant mixtures are discussed through the cycle analysis. It is shown that by using refrigerant mixtures in the heat pump, several improvements can be made. In comparison with conventional pure refrigerants, the application of refrigerant mixtures results in high reliabilities caused by the extension of the application limit, energetic improvements, and a continuous capacity control. From generalizing various results, the optimum compositions in refrigerant mixtures are also determined. The 30%/70% and 40%/60% compositions are selected for R22/R114 and R13B1/R152a, respectively.
Studies on the performance of a heat pump using non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures are done. In order to estimate the thermodynamic properties for the selected non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures including R22/R152a, R22/R142b, R22/R114 and R13B1/R152a, Peng-Robinson equation of state is adopted. The pressure-enthalpy diagram and the temperature-entropy diagram are plotted for each refrigerant mixture. Considerations on the capacity modulation for the heat pump system using refrigerant mixtures are taken into. Results show that when the heating load varies, the possibility for the capacity modulation is found in the heat pump system using a compressor with constant volume flow rate. Under a constant heating capacity condition in the heat pump system, the coefficient of performance increases when the refrigerant mixtures are used. The volume flow rate decreases as the mass fraction of lower boiler increases in this case.
This study investigates alternative refrigerants and refrigerant oils as well as the tendency of protecting the global environment in view of automobile air-conditioning systems. Since decades, the R12 refrigerant is not used in automobile air-conditioners because of the ozone depletion potential (ODP) problem, and for the last 20 years, the ODP-free R134a refrigerant is leading the new automotive air-conditioning market. However, owing to its high global warming potential (GWP), the R134a refrigerant use in automobile air-conditioning system is also prohibited by law, and alternative refrigerants with a low GWP need to be proposed. Therefore, recently, the application of R1234yf, R152a, or other alternative refrigerants has started worldwide. By contrast, natural refrigerant R744 was introduced in the market several years ago by VDA (Verband Der Automobilindustrie), which is a German association in the automotive industry. This study also deals with refrigerant oils. For a long time, polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil has been traditionally used with automobile air-conditioners, and polyolester (POE) oil is suitable for HEV, PHEV, and EV air-conditioning systems, where it is used by the electrically driven compressor owing to its excellent electrical insulation properties. Finally, PAG is an excellent lubricant for all the R134a, R152a, R1234yf, and R744 refrigerants, and has the advantage that it can be applied rapidly to alternative refrigerant air-conditioning systems.
