  • In this paper, we developed an automatic design optimization system for parametric shape optimization of cooling passages inside axial turbine blades. A parallel three-dimensional thermoelasticity finite element analysis code from an open source system was used to perform automatic thermal and stress analysis of different blade configuration. The developed code was connected to an evolutionary optimizer and built in a design optimization system. Using the optimization system, 279 feasible and optimal solutions were searched. It is provided not only one best solution of the searched solutions, but also information of variation structure and correlation of the 279 solutions in function, variable, and real design spaces. To explore design information, it is proposed a new interpretation approach based on evolutionary clustering and principal component analysis. The interpretation approach might be applicable to the increasing demands in the general area of design optimization.

  • The cooling stage greatly affects the product quality in the injection molding process. The cooling system that minimizes temperature variance in the product surface will improve the quality and the productivity of products. The cooling circuit optimization problem that was once solved by a response surface method with 4 design variables. It took too much time for the optimization as an industrial design tool. It is desirable to reduce the optimization time. Therefore, we tried the back-propagation algorithm of artificial neural network(BPN) to find an optimum solution in the cooling circuit design in this research. We tried various ways to select training points for the BPN. The same optimum solution was obtained by applying the BPN with reduced number of training points by the fractional factorial design.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations have been carried out to study how coolant injection conditions influence the cooling efficiency and projectile ejection performance in a mixture-gas ejection system (or gas-steam launch system). The 3D single-phase computational model was verified using a 1D model constructed with reference to the previous research and then a two-phase flow computation simulating coolant injection on to hot gas was performed using a DPM (Discrete Phase Model). As a result of varying the coolant flow rate and number of injection holes, cooling efficiency was improved when the number of injection holes were increased. In addition, the change of the coalescence frequency and spatial distribution of coolant droplets caused by the injection condition variation resulted in a change of the droplet diameter, affecting the evaporation rate of coolant. The evaporation was found to be a critical factor in the design optimization of the ejection system by suppressing the pressure drop while the temperature decreases inside the breech.

  • Improvements in the standard of living and lifestyle have led to increased sales of frozen milk products, such as soft ice cream or slush. These frozen milk products are commonly made in a small refrigeration machine. In a soft ice cream machine, the freezer is composed of a concentric cylinder, where the refrigerant flows in the annul us and the ice cream is made in the cylinder by a rotating scraper. In this study, an optimization and performance evaluation were conducted on a soft ice cream machine having a freezer volume of 2.8 liters. The optimization was focused on the scraper rotation speed and the refrigerant path of the freezer. The measurements included the temperature, pressure and consumed power. At the optimized speed of 124 rpm, ice cream was produced in 6 minutes and 2 seconds, and the COP was 0.90. Through a flow visualization study using air-water, the refrigerant path was improved. The improved design reduced the ice cream making time significantly. The present results may be used for the optimization of other refrigeration cycles, including those of frozen food products.

  • To produce plastic parts that have fine pattern through conventional injection molding, a lot of difficulties follow. Therefore, rapid heating and cooling methods are good candidates for manufacturing injection-molded parts with micro/nano patterns. In this study, we adopted the E-Mold patent technology. The mold for E-Mold technology has a separate heated core with micro heaters. It is very important to optimize the lay-out of the heaters in heated core because it influences both control and distribution of mold temperature. We developed a optimization method of heating line lay-out by using commercial softwares and compared the output with the experimental results. We used Pro-Engineer Wildfire 2.0 for the mold design, ICEMCFD for mesh generation, and FLUENT for heat transfer simulation. The simulation results showed the temperature profile from $60^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$ or $180^{\circ}C$ during heating and cooling process which were compared with the injection molding experiments. We concluded that the simulation could well explain the experimental results. It was shown that the E-Mold optimization design for heater lay-out could be available through the simulation.

  • These days, Uncooled IR Systems are more popular in the area of defense and aerospace than before. Uncooled IR Systems are widely used as core technology for making unmanned systems and detecting enemy objects during the day and night in the distance. Recently, researches on TEC-less IRFPA have been increased to minimize the power consumption and to make a smaller system than before. For this, it needs to find adequate NUC(Non-Uniformity Correction) coefficients as FPA(Focal Plane Array) temperature changes. In this paper, we propose a new NUC coefficient estimating technique, DCCE-LI(Dynamic Calibration Coefficients Estimation with Linear Interpolation), for TEC-less IRFPA. It is based on a linear interpolation method and it can estimate NUC coefficients in real-time. So, by testing and evaluating it with some IR images, we conclude that the quality of IR images using proposed method is better than applying static coefficients.

  • Blending process of adhesive production has a cooling process to cool down the temperature of the solution which was heated up to 76 ℃ with a mineral insulated (MI) cable by 30 ℃ at room temperature. Using a MI cable in the adhesive production process makes the production inefficient because it takes about 10 h for the cooling process. If a jacketed vessel is used instead of the MI cable, it would shorten the cooling downtime without any additional cooling system by using cold water. However, there are various types of jacketed vessels, and thus the most suitable type should be found before set up. In this study, we designed the optimized jacketed vessel for the adhesive production process by calculating the cooling downtime, which impacts production efficiency, as a function of the jacket types using computational fluid dynamics. As a result, the cooling performance of the plain jacket was 32.7% superior to that of the half-pipe coil jacket with the same height. In addition, the plain jacket with 60% spiral baffle reduced the cooling downtime and operating time by 80.4% and 25.1%, respectively.

  • Rescaled Simulated Annealing(RSA) has been devised for improving the disadvantage of Simulated Annealing(SA) which requires tremendous amount of computation time. RSA and SA have been for optimization of truss and satellite structures and for comparison of results from two algorithms. Ten bar truss structure which has continuous design variables are optimized.. As a practical application, a satellite structure is optimized by the two algorithms. Weights of satellite upper platform and propulsion module are minimized. MSC/NASTRAN is used for the static and dynamic analysis. The optimization results of the RSA are compared with results of the classical SA. The numbers of optimization iterations could be effectively reduced by the RSA.
