  • Parametric study fur the cooling characteristic investigation of a notebook PC mounted with heat spreader has been numerically performed. Two oases of air-blowing and air-exhaust at inlet were tested. The cooling effect on Parameters such an, velocities of air-blowing and air-exhaust, materials of heat spreader, and CPU powers were simulated for two cases. Cooling performance in the case of air-blowing was better than the case of air-exhaust.

  • The principal mode of the transmission of Legionnaires disease is a inthalation of the cooling tower water droplets in which Legionellae exist. As a central cooling system is popularized in many public buildings and large buildings nowadays, the number of cooling towers is rapidly increasing. Therefore the possibility of an outbreak of Legionnaires disease is likely increased. To determine the presence of Legionella in cooling tower water as the first step for the prevention of Legionnaires disease, 48 samples of cooling tower water were taken from 24 buildings in Taegu city in july and september 1987. Three samples out of 24 water samples In September yielded Legionella but it was not isolated in the samples of July. Isolated 3 Legionellas were identified as Legionella peumophila. It seems that Legionella from the cooling tower will be isolated more frequently in late summer than early because central cooling system is stopped operation during winter season which is cool. As based on our survey, Legionnaires disease can occur in Taegu city and if it happens it is most likely due to L. pneumophila.

  • In this study, it was intended to suggest new cooling method that enables to improve the applicability and added value higher than existing slag by applying new cooling method(powder cooling slag) at the time discharging slag, which is produced from the ash melting system that the plasma torch is used for the first time in Korea. It is suggested the applicative direction in the development of future recycling process by discovering its nature of material and applicative possibility as earthwork material. The ashes produced after the sewage sludge discharged from Y city was incinerated by the fluidized bed method and was used as test materials. As result of XRF(X-Ray Flourescence Spectrometry) analysis, main ingredient of sewage sludge ashes was $SiO_2$(32%) besides CaO, $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$, and so on. In addition, as result of XRD analysis, traditional diffuse pattern of glass could be found from granulated air-cooled slags, while a minor crystal phase could be observed from powder cooling slag, because the powder on the surface exists in the state not melted. From EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) analysis, it is deemed that powder ingredient has no change before and after it is used as cooling medium, and accordingly it is thought that the powder can be produced as the material where the function is added if used in different shape.

Cooling and Storage Characteristics of Milled Rice by Different Cooling Storage Methods (냉각저장방식에 따른 백미의 냉각 및 저장특성)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the cooling and the quality characteristics of milled rice stored in the forced air-blast type using thermo -electric semiconductor and in the still-air type chambers using refrigeration system with refrigerant(R-22). Cooling rates of milled rice in the forced air-blast type and in the still-air type chambers were $0.30\;^{\circ}C/hour$ and $0.21\;^{\circ}C/hour$, respectively. And the temperatures of cooling air and of milled rice at different positions in the forced air-blast type chamber showed severer change than those in the still-air type chamber. During storage of milled rice in the forced air-blast type and still-air type chambers for 14 weeks, there was no significant difference in the quality characteristics, such as b value and fat acidity of milled rice, and overall sensory quality of cooked rice. But the quality characteristics of milled rice stored in room temperature chamber($25^{\circ}C$) as control decreased very rapidly compare to those stored in the cooling chambers. In aspect of fat acidity of milled rice, 6 weeks was the limitation for the safe storage in room temperature.

  • A fundamental study on the cooling apparatus inshore fishing boat and its operation characteristics in sea water cooling system were performed experimentally. The circumstance is giving the blow against fisherman with incoming-decreasing and the difficulty of crew's supply and demand and management. In addition, the depression of the external situation such as the plan of EEZ(Exclusive Economic Zone) proclaim is forcing them into improving their fishing condition. By this international and domestic surrounding, the development of a cooling apparatus inshore fishing boat is demanded sincerely. We investigated load characteristics as the pilot plant operation characteristics estimation which is based on the development of cooling system and optimum cooling apparatus inshore fishing boat. These results provide useful informations which are applicable to an actual design and show the possibility of application to other fields.

  • For a cooling performance research of the combustor operated in a extreme environment of a high temperature and high pressure, we accomplished a cooling performance analysis. Generally a heat transfer characteristic in cooling passage is known well experimentally and theoretically, however heat flux in the combustion chamber isn't. In this study, fluid flow combined with heat transfer analysis is accomplished about a combustor nozzle. We tried to analyze the cooling performance with a heat transfer characteristic of a gas and coolant side in the view point of quantity on the mass flow rate to be supplied to the cooling channel. And finally, evaluation on the thermal safety of nozzle wall material was accomplished.

  • Design of the cooling channels of a plastic injection mold affects the quality and the productivity of the injection processes. In the injection process, the melted resin with high temperature enters the mold cavity, and just after the cavity is filled the heat should be dissipated through the cooling channels simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to analyse the heat transfer phenomenon and to estimate the temperature distribution in the mold to evaluate the cooling effect of the channels. The injection mold is assumed to have cooling channels of circular cross section and each channel has the same coolant flow rate. and The cavity has a rectangular shape. The results show that as the cooling channels get closer to the cavity surface, the cooling efficiency increases as might easily be guessed. However, due to the final hot resin flow from the gate an intensive cooling is required in that region.

Thermal and Flow Analysis of Outer-Rotor Type BLDC Motor with Cooling Blades (냉각날개를 갖는 외전형 BLDC 모터의 열유동 해석)

  • In this paper, thermo-flow characteristics of an outer-rotor type BLDC motor are numerically analyzed using three-dimensional turbulence modeling. On the rotor of the BLDC motor, cooling blades and cooling holes are existed for the enhanced cooling performances. Rotating the blades and holes generates axial air flow streaming into inner rotor side and passing through stator slots, which cools down stator by forced convection. Operating tests are performed and the numerical temperature fields are found to be in good agreement with experimental results. A new design of the BLDC motor has also been developed and major design parameters such as the arrangement of cooling holes, the area of cooling holes and cooling blades, and the cooling blade angle, are analyzed for the enhanced convective heat transfer rate. It is found that the convective heat transfer rate of the new BLDC motor model is increased by about 8.1%, compared to that of the reference model.

  • In this study, the experiment of thermal performance about closed-type hybrid cooling tower was conducted. A closed type cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The test section for this experiment has the process that the cooling water flows from top part of heat exchanger to bottom side in the inner side of tube, and spray water flows gravitational direction in the outer side of it. Air contacts of tube outer side are counterflow. The heat transfer pipe used in this experiment is a bare type tube having an outside diameter of 15.88mm. In this experiment, heat performances of the cooling tower are calculated such as overall heat transfer coefficient of between the process fluid and air, cooing capacity and pressure drop.

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles(HEVs) have seriously come into prevalence recently as car manufacturers and consumers have become more aware of the environmental and economic problems of conventional vehicles. For the alternative power-train and battery cooling systems in HEVs, an effective thermal management system is required, and many automakers are interested in using Brushless DC(BLDC) motors for cooling fans for the overall traction unit's performance and energy saving capability. This paper presents the development status of BLDC motors as major parts of the power-train, i.e. the engine cooling and battery cooling fans of HEVs. A design that uses BLDC motors for the power-train and each battery cooling fan, is successfully implemented through using electro-magnetic analysis, and prototype BLDC motors are examined. As experimental results, the BLDC motors achieved an efficiency of 85% as engine cooling fans and 72% as a battery thermal management fan motor. The electric cogging noise is significantly reduced by changing the skew of the slot pitch angle and optimizing the magnetic shape.
