  • In the seismic design standard, input waves for different levels of seismic performance are proposed in the form of design response spectra. At the time of establishing these standards, measured records of significant earthquakes that occurred domestically, such as the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake and the 2017 Pohang earthquake, were not included. Additionally, for the ground response analysis, shear wave velocities representing ground amplification characteristics were derived from the results of standard penetration tests (N-values) and applied in empirical formulas. This approach may not adequately capture sufficient information about the characteristics of domestic ground properties. Therefore, in this study, seismic records from the Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes were modified to adjust the bedrock standard design response spectra. Ground response analyses were conducted using shear wave velocity profiles obtained from borehole tests in the Sejong City area. The shape of the response spectrum and ground amplification coefficient obtained from the ground response analysis were then compared with those from existing studies and seismic design standard.

  • ‘Korean Highway Bridge Design Code’ provides the spectrum analysis method with response modification factors for the seismic design of typical bridges. However, considering that korean peninsula is classified as moderate seismic regions and domestic circumstances for bridge design and construction are different from other countries, the applicability of this code is not yet proved. Therefore it is required to verify that applying the spectrum analysis method fulfills the no collapse requirement which is set forth as the basic seismic design concept. In this study two typical bridges with T and ${\prod}$ type piers are selected as analysis bridges and seismic designs are carried out by applying the spectrum analysis method with design conditions given for moderate seismic regions. Based on the results obtained through deign procedures, the role of the response modification factors and fulfillment of the no collapse requirement are discussed, from which supplementary provisions for the design code are identified.

  • Single-mode spectral analysis method is usually applied to a small-scale bridges with the simple geometric shape and uses only fundamental period to estimate the elastic earthquake forces and the displacements of the substructure. On the other hand, multi-mode spectral analysis method may be used instead if the possibilities of potential damage are developed when considering significance, scale, and geometric shape of briages. Since the dynamic responses of bridge can be significantly different depending on the modeling techniques for the restraint and support conditions etc, it may be misled to the unexpected results. In this study the dynamic analysis program which can model and analyze the bridge as a two- or three-dimensional framed structure is developed and verified with the results of other reliable program. Using this program together with the post processor, the designer can easily and readily obtain the reponses(moments, base shears, and displacements)of bridges necessary to design purpose. And further from the analysis results according to the variations of type, scale, and restraint and supprot conditions of bridges including sectional properties, applications of the effective and desirable seismic design are presented.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of shear wave velocity of a seismic control point on site response analysis, one-dimensional equivalent linear site response analysis were performed on the model soil profile based on the results of a detailed site investigation of sedimentary layers at Incheon and Busan. The results of the analysis show that an increase of shear wave velocity on the seismic control point (base rock) results in an increase of acceleration in the soil layers. This was mainly due to an unclear definition of the seismic control point. For this reason, the Korean Seismic Design Standard requires a specific definition of the seismic control point, including spatial conditions and soil properties, similar to the MCE (Maximum Considered Earthquake) in FEMA 369.

  • This study presents the nonlinear dynamic analysis method of the bridge with the seismic isolation bearing. Also the numerical analyses are performed for investigating the response characteristics of the bridge isolated with the lead-rubber bearing under the ground motions compatible to Korea bridge design response spectra. It is found that the pier design force can be considerably smaller than the one for the bridge with the fixed bearing. It is observed that the lead-rubber bearing has the great effectiveness for reducing the longitudinal seismic force in case of the bridges with low and medium periods. Therefore the seismic isolation bearing can be used instead of the fixed bearing for the economic and safe design of the bridge.

  • Because of a new seismic design code has been enacted in 2023, there is a need to evaluate whether the road tunnels in operation satisfies the requirements of the new code. Four tunnels that are considered to be most susceptible to damage. Time history analyses are performed to quantify their seismic performances. The input ground motions generated to fit both 2007 and 2023 codes are used to evaluate the effect of the motions on the calculated responses. The analyses show that all tunnels perform favorably and satisfies the requirements successfully. Therefore, retrofit or reinforcement are deemed as unnecessary.

  • For seismic design of a vertical shaft, three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) analyses were performed to evaluate the accurate response of a vertical shaft and to apply a Response Displacement Method (RDM). Special attention is given to the evaluation of seismic base and response displacement of surrounding soil, estimation of load and loading method. Based on the result, it was found that shear wave velocity of seismic base greater than 1500m/s was appropriate for the seismic design. It was also found that double cosine method which evaluates a response displacement of surrounding soil was most appropriate to consider the characteristic of multi-layered soil. Finally, shape effect of the structure was considered to clarify the dynamic behavior of vertical shaft and it would be more economical vertical shaft design when a vertical shaft was analyzed by using RDM.

  • The main purpose of this study is to provide a basic information for the seismic capacity evaluation and the seismic design of low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall buildings, which are comprised of a pilotis in the first story. In this study, relationships between strengths and ductilities of each story of RC buildings with pilotis are investigated based on the nonlinear seismic response analysis. The characteristics of low-rise RC buildings with pilotis are assumed as the double degree of freedom structural systems. In order to simulate these systems, the pilotis is idealized as a degrading trilinear hysteretic model that fails in flexure and the upper story of shear wall system is idealized as a origin-oriented hysteretic model that fails in shear, respectively. Stiffness properties of both models are varied in terms of story shear coefficients and structures are subjected to various ground motion components. By analyzing these systems, interaction curves of required strengths for various levels of ductility factors are finally derived for practical purposes. The result indicates that the required strength levels derived can be used as a basic information for seismic evaluation and design criteria of low-rise reinforced concrete shear wall buildings having pilotis structure.
