A Comparison with Thermal Reaction Characteristic of Kevlar/EPDM Internal Insulator by Change of Chamber Pressure (Kevlar/EPDM 내열고무의 압력 변화에 따른 열반응 비교)

  • Characteristic of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator used in a solid rocket motor chamber was investigated at 1,030 psi, 35.86 s and 1,406 psi, 36.63 s. Surface status after test was similar each other and thermal destruction depth was 4.10 mm and 4.18 mm, respectively. Kinetic constant ${\xi}$, ${\zeta}$ and thermal destruction velocity $V_{TD}$ were also similar. It was concluded that characteristics of thermal reaction of Kevlar/EPDM internal insulator were not affected by change of chamber pressure.

Flame Retardance and Thermal Resistance of CPE Rubber Compound Containing a Phosphoric Ester Flame Retardant BDPDH (인산 에스테르게 난연제 BDPDH를 첨가한 CPE 고무재료의 난연성 및 내열성)

  • Phosphoric ester compound was employed as thermal resistant and flame retardant for chlorinated polyethylene(CPE) rubber material which is used to prepare automotive oil cooler hose. Cure characteristics, physical properties, thermal resistance, and flame retardation of CPE rubber compounds were investigated. CPE rubber which has excellent properties such as cold resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, and is inexpensive in price than existing ethyleneacrylate rubber(EAR) was used to prepare a rubber compound useful for hose. A non-halogen flame retarding agent N,N'-bis- (diphenylphosphoro) diaminohexane(BDPDH), which is condensed phosphoric ester, was synthesized and it was mixed to CPE rubber material with the range of $0{\sim}30 phr$. From the test results, rheological properties, heat resistance, and flame retardance of CPE rubber compounds were found out to be much increased. The optimum content of BDPDH to rubber which gives maximum effect on thermal resistance and flame retardation, within the range of tolerable specification for rubber materials, was determined to be 20 phr.

A Development of Test Equipment for Thermal Protection Performance on Insulator used in Rocket Motor Chamber (연소관 내열고무의 내열성능평가를 위한 시험장치 개발)

  • Test equipment was designed and manufactured to evaluate thermal reaction characteristic of internal insulators of solid rocket motor. Test is allowed up to chamber pressure 2,500 psi, burn-time 100 s. A cross section of test sample part is quadrature, and various test samples can be comparable at the same time. Inner temperature of test sample can be measured by thermocouples during burning. Test was executed in condition of efficient average chamber pressure 1,000 psi, efficient burn-time 10 s and safety of equipment was confirmed. Basic data for understanding thermal characteristics of internal insulator, that is, pressure-time curve, temperature-time curve in the test sample, and thermal destruction thickness of test sample was gained successfully.

Study on the Flame Retardation and Thermal Resistance for CPE Rubber Material Added Etching By-product of Aluminum (알루미늄 엣칭부산물을 첨가한 CPE 고무재료의 난연성 및 내열성 연구)

  • Aluminum Hydroxide was employed as a thermal retardent and flame retardent for Chloropolyethylene (CPE) rubbery materials which is the construction material of automotive oil cooler hose. and then cure characteristics, physical properties, thermal resistance and flame retardation of compounded rubber were investigated, and optimum mixing conditions of rubber and flame retarding agent were deduced from the experimental results. CPE rubber material which has excellent properties of chemical corrosion resistance and cold resistance and inexpensive in price was used to prepare rubber specimen. The by-product of ething, produced from the process of surface treatment of aluminum was processed to aluminum hydroxide via crushing and purification, which is characterized by XRD, PSA, SEM and ICP-AES techniques in terms of phase, size, distribution, morphology and components of particles and then mixed to CPE rubber materials in the range of 0~80 phr. Hardness, tensile strength, elongation and thermal properties of compounded rubber specimens were tested. The optimum mixing ratio of rubber to additives to give maximum effect on thermal resistance and flame retardation, within the range of tolerable specification for rubber materials, was determined to be 40 phr. The flame retardation of CPE rubber materials was found to be increased by 5 times at this mixing ratio.

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce a method to predict the case thermal insulation charred and erosion thickness as a function of the exposure time to combustion gases and in solid rocket motors. The sizing of the insulator requires a good estimation of the thermal and mechanical loads at the wall. The method is particularly suitable for internal insulation areas subjected to high radiative, convective heat fluxes and $Al_2O_3$ slag pool. The mathematical approach and lab-scale experiment were intentionally simplified in order to obtain some simple and rapid relationships particularly useful for trade-off studies and thermal insulation preliminary design. The method was utilized to compute the charred and erosion thicknesses of the insulation on the aft chamber domes. A comparison between theoretical and experimental insulator char thicknesses of the motor insulation is reported, indicating the applicability of the predictive method employed.

AKM 축소형 복합재 연소관 개발 I

  • KSR 3단 AKM Motor Case를 개발하기 위해 추진기관 경량화에 가장 유리하고 비강도 및 비강성이 뛰어난 복합재 연소관을 고려하여 직경 300mm급의 축소형 모델을 선행 개발하였다. Netting 이론에 의해 연소관 두께를 결정하고 체적을 최소화 하기 위해 구형으로 연소관 형상을 설계하였다. 연소관을 제작하기 위한 맨드렐은 분리, 조립식으로 설계, 적용하였고 연소관 기밀 유지 및 추진기관 연소시 연소관을 보호하기 위한 삭마성 재료로 EPDM base의 고무 내열재 조성을 개발하였다. 고무 내열재는 맨드렐 위에 적층하고 Vacuum bagging 상태로 Autoclave에서 가황하여 적용하였다. 국내 최초로 Prepreg를 사용하는 Dry process로 고무 내열재가 적층된 맨드렐 위에 Winding하고, Vacuum bagging 상태에서 경화하여 연소관을 제작하였으며, 이 때 사용한 Carbor/Epoxy Perpreg 재료의 기계적 성질 및 열특성 시험을 병행하였다. 제작된 연소관은 수압 시험을 통하여 구조적 안정성을 입증하였고, NDT 검사를 통해 재료간 계면 상태를 분석하였다. 시험이 끝난 연소관은 향후 점화기 개발을 위하여 점화제 종류 및 약량을 변경하여 점화 시험을 수행하여 점화기 개발을 위한 기초 데이터를 확보하였다.
