Enchondroma is a benign tumor mainly developed in the hand and uncommon in the foot. Even if it is in the foot, most are in the phalanges and distal metatarsals of the foot. Enchondroma in the calcaneus is very rare. A 44-year-old male suffered from left heel pain for several months, authors treated it with curettage and bone graft, it was histologically confirmed as an enchondroma in the calcaneus. The authors presented a rare case presentation of an enchondroma in the calcaneus with pain.

This case report describes the unusual occurrence of a flexor digitorum profundus avulsion secondary to an enchondroma of the distal phalanx of the middle finger. The enchondroma was treated by simple curettage with an autogenous bone graft harvested from the olecranon. The avulsed bone fragment was reattached to the distal phalanx using the pull-out suture technique. Bony union and full function of the digit were achieved.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to suggest an appropriate treatment method by comparing nonsurgical treatment and surgical treatment for enchondroma in the hands and feet. Materials and Methods: Seventy four cases with enchondroma of the hands and feet from January 1996 to March 2017 were selected to evaluate the functional outcomes. Thirty cases were treated with nonsurgical treatment, and 44 cases were treated with surgical treatment, such as curettage only or curettage with a bone graft. The mean follow-up period was 18.1 months. The functional results were analyzed using the Wilhelm and Feldmeier formula. Results: The mean age was 38 years, and the age range was between eight and 69 years. According to the Wilhelm and Feldmeier formula, the mean score of hand enchondroma was 3.09±0.85 and 3.20±0.91 in the non-operative and operative group, respectively. The mean scores of the foot except for the grip strength were 2.57±0.79 and 2.75±0.50, respectively. No significant difference was observed according to the functional results. Among the 18 cases of enchondroma with pathological fractures, nine cases were treated non-surgically and nine cases were treated by surgically. In all 18 cases, complete bone healing was observed at the final follow-up. Conclusion: Relatively satisfactory results were obtained in both surgical and nonsurgical treatment and there was no significant difference in functional outcomes. In cases of enchondroma in the hands and feet, nonsurgical treatment can also be a good treatment option.

Purpose: To report two cases of bone tumors other than osteoid osteoma in the proximal femur and treated with percutaneous high frequency radioablation method. Cases: We reviewed two cases with intracortical chondroma and enchondroma in the femoral head retrospectively. The patient with intracortical chondroma was a thirty one year old woman and had suffered right hip pain of 1 year duration. The lesion was located in the head of right femur and treated with CT guided percutaneous high frequency radioablation after needle biopsy under general anesthesia. The symptom was gone immediately after the procedure and was discharged postop. 1 day. 15 months has passed without symptom recurrence. Second case having enchondroma, was 56 year old woman complaining of gluteal area pain for 3 months. Radiologic evaluation showed osteolytic lesion with sclerotic rim on the inferior portion of the left femoral head. She received a same therapy with CT guided radiofrequency ablation following needle biopsy. She reported dramatic pain relief after the procedure and was discharged postop. 1 day. No symptom has occurred for 3 months until now. Conclusion: We present 2 cases of bone tumor occurred in the hip joint area other than osteoid osteoma which were treated with CT guided radiofrequency ablation.

Maffucci syndrome was first reported by Maffucci, an Italian, in 1881. This rare, nonhereditary syndrome is characterized by multiple enchondromas combined with hemangiomas and less commonly lymphangiomas. Maffucci syndrome is sometimes confused with Ollier disease, which was described in 1899 and consists of multiple enchondromas without hemangiomas. Although the prevalence of malignant change in skeletal lesions in Maffucci syndrome and Ollier disease is quite similar, it is important to differentiate between these two conditions because of the greater risk of developing nonmusculoskeletal malignancies in the former. We experienced a case of this rare syndrome and because of it's rarity, we report with review of literature.

Purpose: Recent studies have shown increased levels of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in various human malignancies to include various bone and soft tissue tumors. However, little is known with regard to COX-2 expression patterns in chondroid tumors. Materials and Methods: Immunohistochemistry assays were performed for COX-2 in enchondromas (n=10), chondroblastomas (n=11), chondromyxoid fibromas (n=5), conventional chondrosarcomas (n=17), clear cell chondrosarcomas (n=7), and mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (n=6). Results: Among the benign chondroid tumors, chondroblastomas revealed characteristic strong positivity in 6 of 11 cases(54.5%). All enchondromas and chondromyxoid fibromas were negative except in one case. In conventional chondrosarcomas, three cases(17.6%) were strongly reactive with COX-2 and all positive cases represented grade III chondrosarcomas. Clear cell chondrosarcomas were found to be focally positive in two cases(28.5%), while all mesenchymal chondrosarcomas were negative. Conclusions: These findings suggest that COX-2 overexpression in conventional chondrosarcoma may represent an advanced histologic grade. Interestingly, expression of COX-2 in chondroblastomas could be an important factor for inducing peritumoral inflammatory changes in these specific tumors.

Chondrosarcoma is one of the most common types of primary bone sarcoma. With the exception of the mesenchymal subtype, chondrosarcomas are usually low-grade lesions and rarely show multicentricity or distant metastasis. Only rare cases of multicentric chondrosarcomas have been reported in association with Ollier's disease and Maffucci's syndrome. To our knowledge, no report has been issued of a synchronous multicentric chondrosarcoma occurrence across a joint. We experienced a 30-year-old man with a synchronous monomelic juxta-articular multicentric chondrosarcoma across a shoulder joint in the absence of pulmonary and visceral metastases. He was treated by curettage and cement filling with allograft in the acromion and wedge resection with cement filling in the proximal humerus. At the 18-month follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence, and the patient had full range of motion without pain.

Purpose: STAT3 is an oncogene that regulates critical cellular processes, and its constitutive activation has been demonstrated to correlate with biological and clinical features in many types of human malignancy. Materials and Methods: In this study, STAT3 activation was assessed in variable benign and malignant chondroid tumors in bone by immunohistochemistry using a monoclonal antibody specific for $tyrosine^{705}$-phosphorylated STAT3 ($pSTAT3^{tyr705}$). Results: Among conventional chondrosarcomas (n=17), three cases(50%) of grade III chondrosarcomas were pSTAT3-positive. All grade I and II chondrosarcomas were pSTAT3-negative. This pSTAT3 positivity according to the histologic grade was statistically significant (p=0.0432). Two cases(50%) of clear cell chondrosarcomas were pSTAT3-positive. Six cases (50%) among 12 benign chondroid tumors(6 enchondromas, 3 chondroblastomas, and 3 chondromyxoid fibromas) were also $pSTAT3^{tyr705}$-positive. Conclusion: In conclusion, STAT3 activation is associated with higher tumor grade in conventional chondrosarcomas. Our results suggest that STAT3 is activated in a subset of benign and malignant chondroid tumors, and may support the extension of the cancer stem cell hypothesis to include tumors of cartilaginous lineage.

Purpose: We analyzed the oncological outcome and prognostic factor of the chondrosarcoma arising from benign bone tumor due to malignant transformation. Materials and Methods: From April 1986 to April 2009, 18 cases were considered eligible. We analyzed retrospectively the patient's characteristics and prognostic factors that affect to the local recurrence and distant metastasis. Results: As classified by primary benign bone tumor, 4 cases were solitary osteochondroma, 11 cases were multiple osteochondromatosis and 3 cases were multiple enchondromatosis. The mean follow-up period was 85 months. The 5-year disease free survival rate of 18 patients was 85.9%. Their overall MSTS score was 25.2 (84%). There were local recurrence in 3 cases and no distant metastasis. We found that tumor location and surgical margin affected to the prognosis significantly. Conclusion: In secondary chondrosarcoma patients, the prognosis was good relatively and tumor location and surgical margin are important prognosis factor.

Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the efficiency of demineralized bone matrix (DBM, Genesis$^{(R)}$) used for bone defect after operative traetment of benign bone tumors by clinical and radiological methods. Materials and Methods: DBM was used to treat bone defect after operative treatment of benign tumor from February 2012 to May 2013. Total 25 benign bone tumor cases (15 males, and 10 females) with mean age of 30.3 were studied. The diagnoses were solitary bone cyst in 9 cases, non ossifying fibroma in 5, fibrous dysplasia in 5, aneurysmal bone cyst in 3 and enchondroma in 3. In categorization by location of tumor, there were 5 cases of distal femur, 4 of proximal tibia, 3 of proximal femur, 3 of proximal humerus, 3 of phalanx, 2 of distal radius, 2 of hip bone, 2 of calcaneus, and 1 of scapula. Autogenous bone was used with DBM in 6 cases, and only DBM used in 19 cases. Mean periods of follow up were 8.7 months (range: 6 to 14 months). Amount of graft resorption and bone formation was observed with compare of post operation radiograph and the difference was shown by percentage. Resorption level was measured by DBM level which could be observed from simple x-ray, and bone formation level by bone trabecular formation level at impaired site. Results: Twenty three cases of total 25 cases showed bone union. In the 23 cases, more than 98% DBM resorption was observed after mean 4.3 months, and more than 98% bone formation was observed after mean 6.9 months. Lesser bone defect sizes showed faster bone formation and it was statistically significant (p=0.036). But other comparative studies on other factors such as, sex, age of patients and combination of autogenous bone were no statistically significant differences in graft resorption and bone formation. And there was no significant complication in periods of follow-up. Conclusion: Demineralized Bone Matrix (Genesis$^{(R)}$) is thought to be useful treatment for bone defect after operative treatment of benign bone tumor, however longer follow-up periods appears to be needed.
