  • Application methods of chemicals were investigated to minimize strength reduction of corrugated boards under the high humidity environment encountered in the cold chain system. Starch insolubilizers were introduced in the starch solution preparation of the Stein hall method and their insolubilization effect of starch binder were estimated. The performance of water repellent agents(WRA) and moisture proof agents(MPA) were evaluated in terms of water and moisture resistance. And effects of the combination of the chemicals and the coating method were also examined. Addition of the polyamine polyamide insolubilizer to the main part in the Stein hall process improved the binding force and water resistance of starch, which contributed to minimize the strength reduction of paper under the high humidity environment. AZC and Glyoxal type insolubilizers could not be used in the experiment due to an excessively increased viscosity of starch solution and the poor stability. Conventional WRA treatment to the base paper enhanced water and moisture resistance very slightly even though water repellency of the paper reached R10 by the treatment. MPA showed excellent performance than WRA not only in water and moisture resistance but in water repellency. Double coating on paper with MPA was more effective than the single coating at the same coating weight. A newly developed MPA showed excellent performance and runnability only by a single coating instead of a double coating.

태양전지를 보호하기 위한 충진재는 빛의 투과율 저하가 적은 PVB(Poly Vinyl Butylo)나 내습성이 뛰어난 EVA(Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) 등이 주로 이용된다.

  • Hancheon reservoir, which is located upstream of Jeju city, has been built for flood mitigation after Typhoon Nari, 2007. To verify flood mitigating effect of the this reservoir on the downstream area, runoff analysis based on the measured data (two stream discharge monitoring stations and inflow data to the reservoir) is carried out during torrential rain followed by typhoon Dainmu, 2010. The stream water level was recorded as 3.14 m for the peak at the down gradient station. The stream water level under the assumption of absence of Hancheon reservoir is calculated as 4.16 m using the estimated rating curve, stream water propagation velocity, and the bypassed volume of water to the reservoir. This result shows that clear effect of reservoir operation which is capable of mitigating peak discharge in the downstream area.

  • To characterize flooding-affected anatomical morphology changes in soybean, flooding-tolerant cv Pung-sannamulkong (PSNK) and flooding-sensitive cv. Sobaek-namulkong (SBNK) at 5 trifoliate leaf stage were exposed to flooding by maintaining tap water 2 cm above soil surface for 9 days and resultant microscopic anatomical changes in leaf and hypocotyl cross-sections along with chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate changes were compared. Flooding-sensitive SBNK exhibited more significant decrement in chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, number of palisade parenchyma, and leaf dry matter compared to cv. PSNK. Flooding decreased fineness of palisade parenchyma, while inducing wider xylem vessel, especially in PSNK. The aerenchyma formation in hypocotyls under flooding could be observed only in flooding-resistant PSNK. All these anatomical changes seems to be related with higher physiolocial activity and resultant resistance against flooding in PSNK compared to flood-sensitive PSNK.

  • This experiment was carried out to know adaptability and forage production and quality of corn hybrid for silage at paddy field from 2007 to 2008 at JullaNamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES). Among agronomic characteristics, 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid was somewhat strong for waterlogging and good stay green, lodging, disease and insect resistance. The fresh yield and total digestible nutrients (TDN) of 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid were the highest among corn hybrids. Dry yield of 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid was increased to 50.5%, 13.6% due to waterlogging tolerance than those 'P3156' and 'P32P75' hybrids, respectively. The result of this study indicated that 'Kwangpyongok' hybrid could be recommended as having good characters according to production, waterlogging tolerance, stay green at paddy field in southern region of Korea.

  • Super typhoons develop as a result of meteorological changes. In 2012, Typhoons Bolaven and Denba reached Korea. The maximum instantaneous wind speed of the typhoons reached 60 m/sec. Harbor structures including sofa block sustained damage and loss by the abnormally high waves. In Korea, tetrapod blocks were installed the most for wave dissipating. Nevertheless, a structural evaluation of the tetrapod block has not been performed. This study examined the structural mechanism and weakness part of the tetrapod block under a range of boundary conditions. The block has weakness against a tensile force because it is plain concrete. The joint part of the legs is the most vulnerable to tensile stress. The weakest part can be reduced if the joint part is reinforced as a hunch.

  • Typhoon induced surge simulations are done to make an establishment of coastal disaster prevention plan. To apply efficient run-up and overtopping on vertical harbor docks, in which prevailing wet-dry scheme cannot be satisfied due to infinite steepness, an imaginary internal barrier concept introduced and analyzed. Before real application on the Mokpo harbor area, feasibility tests are done on an idealized simple geometry and as a result it is found that the moderate width of the barrier might be 1 m. The threshold value of the minimum wet depth $H_{min}$ for land area, which behaves sensitive role in inundation area and depth, depends on grid size. However it is revealed that 0.01 m is adequate value in this fine finite element with 10 m spacing. A hypothetical typhoon of 100 years return period in central pressure and maximum velocity is generated based on historical tracks. Simulation of possible inundation on Mokpo area is performed with asymmetrical vortex of hypothetical typhoon and wave coupling. Model results show general agreement in pattern compared to other's prediction, however possibility of inundation enlargement is expected in harbor area.

  • After the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, it has been pointed out that Tokai, Tonankai and Nankai massive earthquakes with a magnitude of 9.0 could strike the Pacific coasts in western Japan. This study aims at investigating numerically propagation characteristics of tsunami generated by a 9.0 magnitude Tokai, Tonankai and Nankai massive earthquakes on the Pacific coasts and three major bays in Japan, Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay and Osaka Bay. It was revealed from the numerical results that the tsunami heights on the Pacific coasts for M9.0 earthquake were about twice as much as those for M8.7 earthquake and the first tsunami arrival time was faster at some areas distant from the tsunami source. Moreover, high water level in the bays was recognized to continue for a long time because of the enclosed bays.

  • Numerical simulations of the storm surge and waves induced by the Typhoon Kong-Rey incident on the south coast of Korea in 2018 are conducted using the JMA-MSM weather field provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbours along the south-east coast. For the waves occurring coincidentally with the storm surges the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys operated by the KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency) and the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration), and the data observed at AWAC stations of the KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology). Additional simulations are also performed based on the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by the JTWC (Joint Typhoon Warning Center) of the United States, and the results are compared and analyzed. Based on the results of this study it is found that the reliable weather fields are essential for the accurate simulation of storm surges and waves.

  • Due to the recent climate change impact, natural disasters occur due to sea surface rising, typhoon attacks, flash floods, local heavy rainfalls, landslides, and coastal area erosion, continuing to cause human and property damage. These impacts, coupled with urbanization and industrialization activities, are turning the previously safe areas into disaster-vulnerable areas, increasing human and economic damage. This paper aimed to prepare measures designed to minimize human damage in natural disaster vulnerable parts of South Korea in summer. Toward that end, how vulnerable areas were managed and what the damage was like were studied. Also, cases of human damage and statistics there of were reviewed and analyzed, relevant problems were derived, and thus structural and non-structural measures designed to minimize human damage were presented.
