  • This is the first report of Aulotrachichthys prosthemius (Jordan and Fowler), belonging to the family Trachichthyidae, collected in Korea. One specimens (74.8 mm in standard length) were caught in the coastal waters of Jeju Island by using the bottom trawl. This species was characterized by the following morphological traits: V, 13 dorsal fins; III, 9 anal fins; the striated area along the ventral side of the body reaches to the tip of last anal rays and the post-temporal spine is sharp, pointed and with serrated edge. We propose a new Korean name, "Eeun-jool-geum-nun-dom-sok" and "Eeun-jool-geum-nun-dom" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • About 450 specimens of Lockeia were discovered from the lacustrine siltstone of the Early Cretaceous Jinju Formation of Jin Island, southern coast of Korea. They are very elongated, seed-shaped Lockeia characterized by a large size, mostly 60-70 mm long and 15-20 mm wide. They are characteristically sharp longitudinal furrow bounded by steeply inclined both margins, elevated marginal rims and sharp pointed both longitudinal furrow ends. This trace fossil is herein described as Lockeia gigantus ichnosp. nov. Plicatounio, a freshwater bivalve which does not occur occurs occasionally within Lockeia gigantus is regarded as the most-likely producer of this resting trace fossil. This new trace fossil represents the largest Lockeia ever known and the first record of Lockeia from the Cretaceous non-marine deposits in the world. This fossil also represents an unusual example of resting trace fossil (Lockeia) associated with a possible producer (bivalve Plicatounio) lived in community in the shallow lacustrine environment.

  • This paper presents dual-mode ring-resonator bandpass filter using LUC of artificial-transmission-lines. The conventional ring-resonator bandpass filter has limitation in miniaturization because the conventional ring-resonator is based on a one wavelength operation, and problem due to undesire harmonics. The ring-resonator bandpass filter is miniaturized and show higher order mode rejection by configuring a ring-resonator with LUC of artificial-transmission-lines. The two-stage bandpass filter is designed and fabricated with a ring-resonator and input/output interdigital coupled line. A fabricated filter shows dual-mode, rejection of whole ultra wide band, sharp skirt characteristics and has ring area reduced by 60 % compared to the conventional ring-resonator bandpass filter.

  • Simulation of preparative protein chromatography becomes necessary for separation as well as optimal operation. A mathematical model describing the behavior of elution peaks in preparative protein chromatography for single and binary component separation was solved numerically using a PDEsolver Macsyma$^{\circledR}$(Macsyma Inc., Arlington, MA, U.S.A.). Band profiles were calculated with the equilibrium-dispersive model of chromatography. The effects of the sample volume, concentrations of solutes in the sample, flow velocity and column length on the band profile of the elution peaks are discussed. The results in this paper suggest the model simulation for the binary mixture can be extended to multicomponent separations.

  • In Korea, cases of direct insertion of foreign bodies into the rectum are rare in the literature. Most cases of rectal insertion of foreign bodies are associated with sexual acts and psychiatric disorder such as schizophrenia. Objects inserted into the anus are usually blunt and shaped like the male genitalia. The removal method can be varied depending on the size and shape of the foreign object, its anatomical location, and the accompanying complications. In cases wherein attempts to remove the object fail or there are rectal perforation and peritonitis complications, immediate laparotomy may be required in order to prevent serious complications such as sepsis. Here, we report on a case of rectal perforation and peritonitis due to insertion of a foreign body in a middle-aged patient, with a literature review. He inserted a sharp pig backbone in his rectum and he only had depression. The patient underwent a Hartmann's operation as well as psychiatric counseling and treatment. Thus, after removal of foreign bodies, psychiatric counseling and treatment should be carried out in order to prevent similar accidents and to minimize the need for trauma medicine.

  • This study is to assess the effects of increasing wall thickness on the safety margin of pressure tube in operating and of lowering initial hydrogen concentration on the DHC growth in respect to the improvement of the reliability of pressure tube in CANDU reactors. The pressure tube with thicker wall of 5.2 mm shows much higher safety margin for flaw tolerance by 25% than the current 4.2mmm tube. The thicker pressure tubes have a great benefit in LBB assessment including the initial crack depth at which DHC occurs, the crack length at onset of leaking and the available time for action. The resistance for the pressure tube ballooning at LOCA accident is also increased with the thicker tube. The calculations for Heq concentration after 20 years of operation as a function of wall thickness and initial hydrogen concentration show that the 5.2 mm nil thickness tube with 5 ppm initial hydrogen concentration is the most resistant to DHC. with the lower initial hydrogen concentration, TSS temperature for the precipitation or hydride decreases and the crack growth during cooldown reduces.

  • The effect of aspect ratio on the flow characteristics of elliptic jets was experimentally investigated. The flow characteristics of sharp-edged elliptic nozzles with aspect ratio of 1 (round nozzle), 2 and 4 were measured by using a 3-D LDV system along the major and minor axis at X/De = 2, 3, 5, 7 and along the centerline up to X/De = 14. At each measurement point mean velocites, turbulent intensities, skewness of three orthogonal velocity components, and Reynolds shear stress were obtained. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle equivalent diameter(De) was about 4 * 10$^{4}$. Difference in the spreading rate along the major and minor axis was remarkable. The jet half width along the major axis decreased at first and then increased again with going downstream. But the jet width along the minor axis increased steadly. The elliptic jet of AR = 2 had two switching points within the measurement range, while that of AR = 4 had only one. (AAA) : The elliptic jet of AR = 2 showed larger velocity decay rate than that of AR = 1 and AR = 4. The effect of aspect ratio on the flow characteristics of elliptic jets was dominant in the near jet regions of X/De < 7, and the skewness and Reynolds shear stress had quite different distribution depending on the aspect ratio of the elliptic nozzle.

  • The minor form of phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11; PFK), which was suggested to be of plastid origin from the host fraction of chickpea nodules, was isolated as a small protein with apparent molecular mass near 220 kDa and purified to a high degree. SDS-PAGE and western blot indicated that the enzyme was made up of a homotetrameric structure (55 kDa). The enzyme had sharp pH profiles with maximal activities at pH 8 and displayed Michaelis-Menten kinetics with respect to Fru-6-P and nucleoside triphosphate substrate at the pH optimum (pH 8) and at pH 7. MgATP was the most effective phosphoryl donor. Phosphoenolpyruvate was a potent inhibitor of minor PFK activity, and the enzyme was also strongly inhibited by 3-phosphoglycerate, 2-phosphoglycerate, and to a lesser extent, PPi. Minor PFK was weakly activated by KCl, NaCl and Pi, and was inhibitory at high concentration of KCl and Pi.

  • Using the Vehicle Modeling Function, which can model various 3D nose shapes, nose shape optimization is performed to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the KTX Sancheon. 2D characteristic shapes of the KTX Sancheon nose were extracted and a base model of the KTX Sancheon was constructed for design optimization using the Vehicle Modeling Function. The design space was constructed with the base model and does not violate the shape constraints of commercial trains. Through nose shape optimization with the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm, the aerodynamic drag of the optimized shape was reduced by 6% compared to that of the base model. The longer nose and sharper edge of the optimized shape weaken the vortices behind the last car and can reduce the aerodynamic drag.

  • Six specimens (151.4~171.2 mm in standard length) of the poacher Aspidophoroides monopterygius were collected by Danish seine net in the coastal waters off Samcheok and Gangneung, the East Sea, Korea. This species is characterized by a slender body, one dorsal fin, terminal mouth, no barbel on the head, and a pair of nasal spines on the snout. It differs from Anoplagonus occidentalis Lindberg in having a nasal spine. We describe it as the first record within the Korean fish fauna, and propose the new Korean name "Ak-eo-jul-go-gi" for this species.
