Effect of the Leading Edge and Vein Elasticity on Aerodynamic Performance of Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicles (날갯짓 초소형 비행체의 앞전 및 시맥 탄성이 공력 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • The flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FW-MAV) in this study utilizes the cambered wings made of quite flexible material. Similar to the flying creatures, the present cambered wing uses three different materials at its leading edge, vein, and membrane. And it is constrained in various conditions. Since passive rotation uses the flexible nature of the wing, it is important to select an appropriate material for a wing. A three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction solver is developed for a realistic modeling of the cambered wing. Then a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic performance in terms of the elastic modulus of leading edge and vein. Consequently, the elastic modulus plays a key role in enhancing the aerodynamic performance of FW-MAVs.

Evolutionary Optimization of Neurocontroller for Physically Simulated Compliant-Wing Ornithopter

  • This paper presents a novel evolutionary framework for optimizing a bio-inspired fully dynamic neurocontroller for the maneuverable flapping flight of a simulated bird-sized ornithopter robot which takes advantage of the morphological computation and mechansensory feedback to improve flight stability. In order to cope with the difficulty of generating robust flapping flight and its maneuver, the wing of robot is modelled as a series of sub-plates joined by passive torsional springs, which implements the simplified version of feathers attached to the forearm skeleton. The neural controller is designed to have a bilaterally symmetric structure which consists of two fully connected neural network modules receiving mirrored sensory inputs from a series of flight navigation sensors as well as feather mechanosensors to let them participate in pattern generation. The synergy of wing compliance and its sensory reflexes gives a possibility that the robot can feel and exploit aerodynamic forces on its wings to potentially contribute to the agility and stability during flight. The evolved robot exhibited target-following flight maneuver using asymmetric wing movements as well as its tail, showing robustness to external aerodynamic disturbances.

A Two-dimensional Numerical Study of Hummingbird's Flight Mechanisms and Flow Characteristics (벌새의 비행메커니즘과 유동특성에 대한 2차원 수치해석 연구)

  • In order to understand flow characteristics and flight mechanism of hummingbird's flapping flight, two-dimensional numerical analysis is carried out on the flapping motion of hummingbird, Selasphorus rufus. Hummingbird's flapping wing motion is realistically modeled from wind tunnel experimental data to perform numerical analysis. Numerical simulation shows that, as freestream velocity changes, wing trajectory is also adjusted and it substantially affects lift and thrust generation mechanism. According to this tendency, flight domain is separated as "low speed" and "high speed" regime, and each flight domain is studied for physical understanding. As a result, the lift generation during downstroke can be explained by the well-known effects, such as leading edge vortex effect, delayed stall, wake capture and so on. In addition, the lift generation during upstroke, the unique character of hummingbird, is also examined by detailed flow analysis. The thrust generation mechanism is investigated by examining the hummingbird's wing bone structure, vortex generation pattern and the resulting pressure gradient.
