  • In the present study, velocity profile and wall shear stress distributions of developing turbulent oscillatory flows in an oscillator connected to straight duct located in exit region of a curved duct was investigated experimentally. The experimental study for air flows was conducted to measure axial velocity profiles, shear stress distributions by using the Laser Doppler Velocimetry(LDV) system with the data acquisition and processing system of Rotating Machinery Resolver(R.M.R) and PHASE software. The results obtained from experimental studies are summarized as follows. The critical Reynolds number for a change from transitional oscillatory flow to turbulent flow was about 7500, in the 60region of dimensionless axial position which was considered as a fully developed flow region. The turbulent oscillatory flow, velocity profiles of the inflow period in the entrance region were gradually developed, but those of the outflow period were not changed nearly. Velocity profiles of inflow and outflow were shown as a symmetric form in a fully developed flow region. The wall shear stress distributions of turbulent oscillatory flow increase rapidly as the flow proceeds to downstream and flow was in good agreement with the theoretically.

  • In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flow in an oscillator connected to square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are investigated experimentally. In order to investigate wall shear stress and pressure distributions, the experimental studies for air flows we conducted in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV system with the data acquisitions and the processing system. The wall shear stress at bend angle of the $150^{\circ}$ and pressure distribution of the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) by $10^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct are measured. The results obtained from the experiment are summarized as follows : wall shear stress values in the inner wall we larger than those in an outer wall, except for the phase angle (${\omega}t/{\pi}/6$) of 3, because of the intensity of secondary flow. The pressure distributions are the largest in accelerating and decelerating regions at the bend angle(${\phi}$) of $90^{\circ}$ and pressure difference of inner and outer walls is the largest before and after the ${\phi}=90^{\circ}$.

  • In the present study, the pressure distribution, wall shear stress distribution and friction factor of developing turbulent pulsating flows are investigated theoretically and experimentally in the entrance region of a square duct. The pressure distribution for turbulent pulsating flows are in good agreement with the theoretical values. The time-averaged pressure gradients of the turbulent pulsating flows show the same tendency as those of turbulent steady flows as the time-averged Reynolds number $(Re_{ta})$ increase. Mean shear stresses in the turbulent pulsating flow increase more in the inlet flow region than in the fully developed flow region and approach to almost constant value in the fully developed flow region. In the turbulent pulsating flow, the friction factor of the quasi-steady state flow $({\lambda}_{q, tu})$ follow friction factor's law in turbulent steady flow. The entrance length of the turbulent pulsating flow is not influenced by the time-averaged Reynolds number $(Re_{ta})$ and it is about 40 times as large as the hydraulic diameter.

  • Swirl flow has an impact on the stabilization of the flame by the recirculation flow, improvement of the combustion efficiency. The swirl flow in the gun type burner is created by the spinner which is inside the airtube that guide the combustion air. Burner has generally the combustion device composed electronic spark plug, injection nozzle, combustion device adaptor, and spinner. These inner components change the air flow behavior passing through airtube. So, this study analyzed exhaust flow characteristics of the gun type burner according to the ratio of airtube diameter. Turbulence characteristics by the spinner was mean velocity, turbulence intensity, kinetic energy, shear stress and flattness factor of the air flow of axial direction and tangential direction from the exit of the airtube.

  • The near field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distribution is investigated experimentally. Experiments were carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements were undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distribution of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stress. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend at the upstream of the exit. Three pipes were used for this study: A straight pipe, 90 and 160 degree-bended pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the pipe exit, the secondary flow through the bend and the mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes.

  • Minimization of hemolysis is one of the key factors for successful axial flow blood pumps. It is, however, difficult to estimate the hemolytic performance of axial flow blood pumps without experiments. Instead, the Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) analysis enables the prediction of hemolysis. Three-dimensional fluid dynamics of axial flow pumps with different impellers were analyzed using the CFD software, FLOTRAN. The turbulence model k-$\varepsilon$ was used. The changes in turbulent kinetic energy applied to each particle (red blood cell) flowing through the pumps were computed and displayed by the particle trace method (particle spacing of 10 msec). Also, the Reynolds shear stress was calculated from the turbulent kinetic energy. The shear stress was higher behind the impellers than elsewhere. The CFD analysis could predict in vitro results of hemolysis and also the areas where hemolysis occurred. The CFD analysis was found to be a useful tool for designing less hemolytic rotary blood pumps.

  • The flow characteristics around KRISO 300K VLCC double-body model have been experimentally investigated in a closed-type subsonic wind tunnel. The local mean velocity and turbulence statistics including turbulent intensity. Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy were measured using a x-type hot-wire probe. The measurements were carried out at several transverse stations of the stern and near wake regions. The surface flow was visualized using on oil-film technique to see the flow pattern qualitatively. The flow in the stern and near wake region revealed complicated three-dimensional flow characteristics. The VLCC model shows a hook-shaped wake structure behind the propeller boss in the main longitudinal vortex region. The thin boundary layer at midship was increased gradually in thickness over the stern and evolved into a full three-dimensional turbulent wake.

  • Swirl flow in the gun type burner has a decisive effect on the stabilization of the flame, improvement of the combustion efficiency, and also a reduction of NOx. This swirl flow is created by the spinner which is inside the airtube that guide the combustion air. Gun type burner has generally the inner devices composed nozzle adapter, spark gap ignitor, and spinner. These inner components change the air flow behavior passing through air tube. Meanwhile, turbulent characteristics of this air flow are important to understand the combustion phenomena in the gun type burner, because the mixture of fuel and air are depended on. However, nearly all of the studies have been analyzed the turbulent flow of simplified combustion formation without the inner devices. So, this study conducted the measurement using by hot-wire anemometer and analyzed turbulent flow characteristics of the swirl flow discharged from the air tube with inner devices. Turbulence characteristics come up in this study were turbulence intensity, kinetic energy and shear stress of the air flow with the change of the distance of axial direction from the exit of the air tube.

  • Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the mean velocity profile, root-mean-square of velocity fluctuations, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent viscosity.
