  • Computational and experimental investigations on the three-dimensional flowfield through an automotive cooling fan are carried out in this work. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional, turbulent flow through a rotating axial-flow fan is analyzed with Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model. The governing equations are discretized with finite-volume approximations in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. Computational static pressures on the casing wall agree well with the experimental data which are measured in this work. And, they are sensitive to the change of tip clearance. The flowfield is not significantly affected by the thickness of the blade. The k-.omega. model gives the static pressure rise on the casing wall which is similar to that with the k-.epsilon. model.

  • This paper represents numerical computations of the interaction between the longitudinal vortex and a flat plate 3-D turbulent boundary layer. In the present study, the main interest is in the behavior of longitudinal vortices introduced in turbulent boundary layers. The flow field behind vortex generator is modeled by the information that is available from studies on the delta winglet. Also, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke equations for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, is solved by the method of pseudo compressibility. The present results show that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall, and have a good agreement with the experimental data.

  • A new E-$\varepsilon$ turbulence numerical model is proposed for analysing the turbulent air flow field within are urban street canyon. In this model the equations of eddy viscosity and energy dissipation ae reformed by considering the Kolmogorov time scale and streamline curvature effect. Application results of the new E-$\varepsilon$ model have been compared with those of standard E-$\varepsilon$ model and Yang and Shih's one, which are commonly used ones in engineering fields, and with field experiment results of DePaul and Sheih. The new model appears to be generally superior to other both models in the prediction of an air flow field within street canyon.

  • In the present study, the turbulent flow from an annular jet is investigated by using large eddy simulation. Particularly, the effect of the ratio of the inner and outer diameters is one of the main interests of this study. The instantaneous fields presented in this paper showed that behind the jet exit the backflow region, as well known in literatures, exists, and its detailed behavior depends on the ratio of the inner and outer diameters ($D_1/D_2$). The dependence on $D_1/D_2$ is attributed to the different shear layer development according to $D_1/D_2$. At small $D_1/D_2$, the development of the outer shear layer is similar to that from the circular jet. However, with increasing $D_1/D_2$, the interaction between the outer and inner shear layers becomes strong, resulting in fast transition to turbulence.

  • This study aims to propose a new model axial flow fan which attachs centrifugal blades, and to investigate the effect of centrifugal blades on the performance improvement of new model axial flow fan. A numerical simulation has been conducted using STAR-CD commercial code to solve the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for high Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model. Numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the detail phenomenon in the flow field and performance characteristics of new model and normal model fan. Calculation results are compared with normal model's results to investigate which centrifugal blades effect on velocity profile and pressure distribution at various flow field positions. and calculation results show that new model fan can improve the performance of total pressure.

  • The effect of curvature, rotation, variable cross-section can make very complex flow pattern in turbo-machinery such as Pumps, compressors, turbines, In this study of turbulent flow characteristics rotating $90^{\circ}$ curved duct under a Plane rate of strain condition is computationally analyzed. The objective of this study is to understand the complex turbulent flow phenomena in turbo-machinery passage by analyzing the modeled rotating $90^{\circ}$ curved duct flow. RSM(Reynolds Stress Model) was employed for the turbulence modeling of Reynolds stress in momentum equations proposed by Shin(1995). The three dimensional computational code which adopts RSM for trubulence modeling was newly developed for the generalized curvilinear coordinate.

  • Numerical simulation is performed for stagnating turbulent flows of impinging and countercurrent jets by the Reynolds stress model(RSM). Results are compared with those of the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and available data to assess the flow characteristics and turbulence modes. Three variants of the RSM tested are those of Gibson and Launder(GL), Craft and Launder(GL-CL) and Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski(SSG). As well known, the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model overestimates turbulent kinetic energy near the wall significantly. Although the RSM is superior to the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model, it shows considerable difference according to how the redistributive pressure-strain term is modeled. Results of the RSM for countercurrent jets are improved with the modified coefficients for the dissipation rate, $C_{{\varepsilon}1}\;and\;C_{{\varepsilon}2}$ suggested by Champion and Libby. The performance of the three variants of the RSM model for stagnating flows are assessed.

  • This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially-injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flamelet model. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.

  • A theoretically based prediction for the determination of the subchannel friction factor at low pitch to the rod diameter ratio (P/D < 1.2) in the bare rod bundle flow has been developed. The present model assumes the validity of the Law of Wall over the entire flow area. The algebraic form of the Law of the Wall is integrated over the entire flow area and the local friction velocity variation along the rod periphery is considered in this study. The present method is applied to the rod bundles with P/D < 1.2, and the prediction results show good agreement with the available experimental data.
