Statistical Characteristics of Recent Lightning Occurred over South Korea (최근 남한지역에서 발생한 낙뢰의 통계적 특성)

  • Lightning data, observed from total lightning detection system (TLDS) of KMA, for the recent five years (2002-2006) have been analyzed for temporal and spatial characteristics of frequency, intensity, duration, and flash rate. Lightning frequency varies largely with years (most frequent in 2006) and the lightning during the summer accounts for 75% of total flashes and only 0.6% of lightnings strike in cold season. In rainy season (JJAS), the ratio of positive flashes to negative ones is as low as 0.15, but it increases up to 0.98 in February. The seasonal variation of lightning duration is strongly linked with lightning occurrences, whereas flashes rates show weak seasonal variability. In a daily scale, lightning, on average, occurs more often at dawn (2 am, 5-7 am) and in the mid-afternoon (15 pm), and the lightning at dawn (around 5 am) is most intense during the day. The western inland areas md the West/South Sea show high lightning density during JJAS, whereas eastern part and the East Sea exhibit a low density of lightning. Considering the low ratio of positive flashes (0.15) for the whole analysis domain during summer period, Chungnam and Jeonbuk areas have a high ratio of flashes over 0.4. However, these should be analyzed with much caution because weak positive cloud-to-cloud discharges can be regarded as cloud-to-ground flashes. The western inland also exhibits long annual flash hours (15-24). And the W3st Sea has high flash rates as a result of large density and low flash hours. The most frequent time of lightning occurrence over most inland areas lies between mid-afternoon and early-evening, whereas mountainous and coastal areas, and the northern Kyoungki and Hwanghae provinces show the maximum lightning strikes in the morning and at dawn, respectively.

  • The statistical characteristics of Cloud-to-Ground (CG) lightning data, observed by the total lightning detection system (TLDS) of KMA during the recent seven years (2002-2008), have been analyzed. Lightning frequency shows a strong interannual, seasonal and diurnal variations without regard to the polarity. The 74% and 0.6% of the total lightning occurred during the summer and winter, respectively. And it has a bimodal diurnal variation with two peaks (dawn: 0500-0700 LST, mid-afternoon: 1500-1600 LST). The ratio of positive flashes to negative ones also has a strong seasonal variation with the maximum and minimum during winter (62.5%) and summer (7.3%), respectively. Unlike the lightning frequency, the lightning intensity of negative flashes shows a weak interannual, seasonal and diurnal variations. However, the lightning intensity of positive flashes exhibits an inverse seasonal variation to that of lightning frequency, with the minimum and maximum during summer and winter, respectively. The lightning density is greatly higher in the western inland areas and the West/South Sea than in the eastern part and the East Sea. In general, the lightning intensity is stronger in the ocean, especially in the East Sea than in the inland area, regardless of the polarity.

On the Relation Between Cloud-to-Ground Lightning and Rainfall During 2006 and 2007 Summer Cases (2006-2007년 여름 사례로 본 구름-지면 낙뢰와 강우의 관계)

  • A relationship between cloud-to-ground lightning and rainfall was investigated by using the two-years (2006-2007) summer lightning data and the automatic weather stations (AWSs) data of the Korea Meteorological Administration. The negative lightning occurred at the core of highly concentrated convection, which is often accompanied with heavy rains. Whereas most positive lightning occurred at the anvil cloud with low density and light rains. The rainfall intensity is strongest when the negative and positive lightning occurred concurrently, and one with lightning is much stronger than that without lightning. A portion of the positive lightning of the total lightning was less than 10% during summer seasons, and the lightning without rains was about 34%. The rain rate was strongly correlated with the negative flash rate, and the correlation coefficients varied between 0.87 and 0.94 according to the co-location radius (5-15 km) of AWSs. Most of the lightning occurred 10 minutes before and/or concurrently occurred with rains. A portion of the convective rainfalls of the total rainfalls was at least 20% when we define the rainfalls with lightning as convective. The convective rainfall was greater during August than in June and July. In general, the portion of convective rainfalls showed a maximum diurnal variation during late afternoon as in the rains and lightning.

  • 낙뢰란 뇌운 속에서 분리 축적 된 음 (-)과 양 (+)의 전하 사이 또는 뇌운 속의 전하와 지면에 유도되는 전하 사이에서 발생하는 불꽃 방전을 말한다. 뇌운 안에는 이 불꽃 방전을 반복하기에 충분한 전하의 분리가 계속 일어나고 있는데, 그 결과 양전하 (+)는 구름의 상부에 넓게 분산되어 분포하고, 음전하 (-)는 주로 구름 하부에 분포한다. 이 때 음전하가 대지로 방전되어 발생하는 낙뢰를 부극성 (-)낙뢰, 양전하가 대지로 방전되어 발생하는 낙뢰를 정극성 (+)낙뢰라 한다. 낙뢰의 약 80%는 구름 내부 또는 구름 대 구름 사이에서 발생하고, 약 20%만이 구름과 지면 사이에서 발생하는데, 이러한 구름-지면 낙뢰 (Cloud-to-ground lightning)는 가장 위험하고 그 피해도 크다. 우리나라는 동아시아 몬순 기후의 영향으로 여름철에 대기가 불안정하여 낙뢰가 집중적으로 발생하며, 복잡한 지형과 해양의 영향으로 낙뢰현상의 공간적 변동도 크게 나타난다. 이러한 낙뢰는 최근으로 올수록 강도가 증가하고 있어 그 피해의 증가가 우려되기 때문에 낙뢰 발생 특성에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 낙뢰자료와 강수자료, 그리고 시 공간 분해능이 뛰어난 MTSAT-1R (Multi-functional Transport SATellite - 1 Replacement) 정지궤도 위성의 휘도온도를 이용하여 낙뢰 발생 시 강수 및 위성 휘도온도의 특성을 분석하고자 한다. 이러한 연구는 대류활동에 대한 정보 제공 뿐 아니라, 낙뢰 예측성 향상 및 재해 경감에도 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 2001년 기상청에 도입되어 운영 중인 신 낙뢰관측 시스템 (Total Lightning Detection System, TLDS)에서 관측된 낙뢰자료와 MTSAT-1R 위성에서 관측된 휘도온도 자료, 그리고 자동기상관측장비 (Automatic Weather System, AWS)에서 관측된 강수자료를 사용하였으며, 세 자료의 출처는 모두 기상청이다. 분석 기간은 2006년부터 2007년까지이며 우리나라에서 낙뢰발생 빈도가 여름철에 집중되어 나타나는 것을 고려하여 여름철 (6~8월) 낙뢰에 대해서만 분석하였다. 또한 낙뢰 발생 사례에 대하여 관측 효율이 90% 이상으로 알려진 위도 $33{\sim}39^{\circ}N$, 경도 $124{\sim}130^{\circ}E$ 영역에서 낙뢰발생시 강수 및 위성 휘도온도의 특성을 분석하였다. 사례는 낙뢰 발생 횟수가 많은 날을 중심으로 먼저 적외영상과 낙뢰영상을 정성적으로 분석한 후 뇌우의 지속시간이 긴 9개 사례를 선정하였다. MTSAT-1R 위성과 낙뢰자료 및 강수자료는 관측주기와 공간규모가 서로 다르기 때문에 세 자료를 함께 사용하기 위해서는 시 공간을 일치시키는 과정이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 위성자료 관측시간(00분, 33분)과 AWS 지점 위 경도를 시 공간 일치를 위한 기준으로 사용하였다.

  • In recently years, occurrences of lightning return strokes have been increased by global worming effect and intensity of lightning impulse voltage and current accompanied by lightning discharges has being strengthening. In Korea, 560 thousand lightning discharges happened in 200S. According to the increasing frequencies of lightning, human deaths and damages to the structure have been increased steadily. Electric fire caused by lightning return strokes due to the breakdown between power line and ground line from the ground potential rise on a process of the lightning impulse current through to the ground. The damages of lightning were occurring at same time in the neighboring areas of the lightning point. In order to protect from the lightning stroke, we made a suggestion to use protection devices and equipotential bonding at the dangerous areas. The analysis results of electric fires caused by lightning would be utilized to investigate and to find accurate fire cause in the fire scenes.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of lightning pver Jeju island and a case of emergency stop of a wind turbine due to lightning. Using the IMPACT ESP sensor to detect lightning, the data on lightning frequency, lightning strength, regional lightning event were obtained and analyzed in detail. The measurement period was for 3 years from 2004 to 2006. As a result, lightning occulted the most frequently in July and August. As for lightning strength, lightning with grades -4 to -6 and +3 to +5 occur ed more frequently. The eastern part of Jeju island had much more lightning frequency compared with the western part of it. Lightning with high grade occurred mainly in offshore site and the coastal region. Furthermore, the data on wind turbine stop caused by lightning was analyzed. Although wind turbine lightning damage was not much in this study, the investigation on lightning damage or lightning faults to a wind turbine should be conducted in Korea to increase availability of wind turbine.

Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Compression-after-Impact Test of Nano-Particles-Coated CFRP Damaged by Simulated Lightning Strikes (나노입자 코팅 CFRP의 모의 낙뢰 충격손상 후 압축시험에서의 음향방출 거동)

  • Nanoparticles-coated and impact-damaged carbon-fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) laminates were tested under compression-after-impact(CAI) mode and the propagation of damage due to compressive loading has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE). The impact damage was induced not by mechanical loading but by a simulated lightning strike. CFRP laminates were made of carbon prepregs prepared by coating of conductive nano-particles directly on the fibers and the coupons were subjected to simulated lightning strikes with a high voltage/current impulse of 10~40 kA within a few microseconds. The effects of nano-particles coating and the degree of damage induced by the simulated lightning strikes on the AE activities were examined, and the relationship between the compressive residual strength and AE behavior has been evaluated in terms of AE event counts and the onset of AE activity with the compressive loading. The degree of impact damage was also measured in terms of damage area by using ultrasonic C-scan images. From the results assessed during the CAI tests of damaged CFRP showed that AE monitoring appeared to be very useful to differentiate the degree of damage hence the mechanical integrity of composite structures damaged by lightning strikes.

Analysis of Cable Protection of Duct in Lightning and HIRF Environment of UAM Aircraft and a Proposal for Certification Guidance (UAM 항공기 낙뢰 및 HIRF 환경에서 덕트의 케이블 보호 성능 분석 및 인증기술에 관한 연구)

  • Cities around the world are increasing their demand for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) aircraft due to traffic congestion with population concentration. Aircraft with various shapes depending on fixed-wing and propulsion systems, are being prepared for commercialization. Airworthiness certification is required as it is a manned transportation vehicle that flies in the city center and transports people on board. UAM aircraft are vulnerable to lightning and HIRF environments due to the increasing use of composite materials, the use of electric motors, and use of electronic equipment. Currently, the development of certification technology, guidelines, and requirements in lightning and HIRF environments for UAM aircraft is incomplete. In this study, the certification procedures for lightning and HIRF indirect impacts of rotorcraft shown in AC 20-136B and AC 20-158A issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), were verified and applied to the computerized simulation of UAM aircraft. The impact of lightning and HIRF on ducted fan UAM aircraft was analyzed through computerized simulation, and the basis for establishing practical guidelines for certification of UAM aircraft to be operated in the future is presented.

An assessment for effect of landslide on Maximum Continuous Rainfall using GIS (GIS를 이용한 최대지속강우량이 산사태 발생에 미치는 영향평가)

  • 우리나라의 자연재해는 기상학적 자연현상에 의해 주로 발생되고 있으며 그 발생원인은 태풍, 호우, 폭풍, 폭풍우, 재설, 폭풍성 우박, 해일 및 기타(낙뢰, 돌풍, 설해, 결빙, 지진 등을 포함)로 구분되며 이중 발생빈도가 가장 높은 것은 강우에 의한 재해로 전체 재해발생 원인 중 약 80%로 대부분을 차지하고 있다. 특히 사면붕괴와 관련된 자연재해(산사태, 옹벽붕괴, 매몰 등)는 최근 국지성 집중호우를 포함하여 호우의 집중 강도가 높아지는 등 기상학적 원인에 의해 매년 발생하고 있다. 따라서 우리나라에서 발생되는 자연재해와 관련한 사면붕괴의 특성을 강우특성에 따라 조사 분석할 필요가 있으며 이에 적합한 대책들이 더욱 필요하다. 이 연구에서는 산사태 유발인자와 강우조건을 고려하여 산사태 잠재가능성을 평가하고 산사태 취약지역을 분석하여 지역적인 강우특성을 고려한 산사태 가능성을 평가하였다.

Vibrational Characteristics on the Cables in Cable Stayed Bridge (사장교 케이블의 진동거동 특성)

  • Recently, a cable disconnection accident occurred due to a lightning strike at the Seohae Bridge located in Dangjin-Pyeongtaek City. This is a natural occurrence, but it is a recall that it is very important to review the safety issues due to the disconnection of cable bridges. In other words, the role of cables in cable bridges has a profound effect on the safety of the structure, and it has become necessary to grasp the effect on the entire structural system. The cable bridge is an economic bridge that builds the main tower and supports the bottom plate by cable. The influence of the cable is the main member, which is a big influence on the safety of the whole bridge system. In the cable-stayed bridge, the cables exhibit nonlinear behavior because of the change in sag, due to the dead weight of the cable, which occurs with changing tension in the cable resulting from the movement of the end points of the cable as the bridge is loaded. Modal analysis is conducted using the deformed dead-load tangent stiffness matrix. A new concept was presented by using divided a cable into several elements in order to study the effect of the cable vibration (both in-plane and swinging) on the overall bridge dynamics. The result of this study demonstrates the importance of cable vibration on the overall bridge dynamics.
