  • This study was carrid out to investigate the distribution of forest insect pests in Junsanri-gol, Daewonsa-gol, and Georim-gol of Mt. Jiri. A total of 140 species of forest insect pests belonging to 44 families under 7 orders were collected in these areas: 59 species 16 families in Lepidoptera, 35 species 9 families in Coleoptera, 33 species 10 families in Homoptera, 4 species 3 families in Hemiptera, 6 species 3 families in Hymenoptera, 1 species of Orthoptera and 2 species of Phasmida. These were 85 species of 36 families under 6 orders in Daewonsa-gol, 67 species of 31 families under 6 orders in Jungsanri-gol and 56 speices of 27 families under 7 orders in Georim-gol.

  • In order to establish an effective pest control strategy, we investigated the occurrence of lepidopteran insects in the major trees growing in urban forests from 2019 to 2021. In total, we recorded 76 species of 14 families in Prunus spp., 40 species of eight families in Acer spp., 43 species of 10 families in Zelkova serrata, 28 species of seven families in Rhododendron spp., and 10 species of four families in Hibiscus syriacus. Among these, Hyphantria cunea and Lymantria dispar were recorded from all five tree taxa monitored. The most frequently occurring species in the different tree groups were as follows: H. cunea and Phalera flavescens in Prunus yedoensis, Epinotia ulmicola in Z. serrata, and Rehimena surusalis in H. syriacus. H. cunea also occurred in Rhododendron spp. and Acer spp., although the numbers were lower than those recorded in Prunus spp. and Z. serrata. Our results highlight the importance of focusing on the frequency of occurrence of lepidopteran insects in Prunus spp. and Z. serrata, whereas the presence of these insects in both Acer spp. and Rhododendron spp. Appears to be less problematic. From the perspective of reducing the risks to human health, our findings indicate that the application of pheromones for monitoring lepidopteran species and the use of mating disruptors would be desirable approaches that would contribute to minimizing the spraying of pesticides in urban forests.

  • In this review, the compositions of the sex pheromones of 22 lepidopteran species were analyzed and briefly arranged by comparing the research results conducted in different locations worldwide. These compositions can be used as monitoring tools for pests of rice, maize, leguminous crops, perilla, and sesame in Korea. The sex pheromone compounds and those compositions of four species were successfully identified within Korean populations. The optimal compositions of sex pheromones of three other species were selected through behavioral studies using synthetic chemicals of the known pheromone compounds in laboratories and fields, without chemical identification processes in the sex pheromone compounds of Korean populations. For a few species, the roles of the minor components of the sex pheromone volatiles should be re-assessed for use in the development of optimal monitoring lures.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution of forest insect pests of Dobongsan in Bukhansan Nation Park. A total of 76 species of forest insect pests belonging to 29 families under 5 orders were collected in these areas: 24 species 9 families in Lepidoptera; 23 species 9 families in coleoptera; 20 species 4 families in Homoptera; 6 species 5 families in Hemiptera, and 3 species 2 families in Hymenoptera. These were 66 species of 28 families under 5 orders found in Songchoo-gol, and 41 species of 19 families under 5 orders found in Hoeryong-gol. Key foest insects for control pests were confirmed to be Platypus koryoensis, Arcte coerulea, Erannis golda, and Isyndus obscurus was classified predaceous natural enemy.

  • In this study, one species of the bag moth, Mahasena aurea (Butler) (Lepidoptera: Psychidae), was found for the first time in Korea as a new insect pest on leaves of Liriope spicata (Thunb.) Lour. Also, the female larvae and adults of the species were first collected in this country. Larvae, pupae, and adults of both sexes are redescribed with illustrations of all external characteristics including the genitalia of the male.

  • As a result of investigation on the larvae attacking leaves of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. and causing serious damage on the plant in Seoul, Chungnam and Jeonbuk Province in Korea during summer in 2013, Protegira songi Chen & Zhang of the family Noctuidae was identified. In this study, we report the host plants of it for the first time from Korea, with larval damage and taxonomic information by illustrating the characteristics of male and female genitalia.
