Korean Species of Aristaea Meyrick, 1907 (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Gracillariinae) (한국미기록 Aristaea屬(속) (나비目(목): 가는나방科(과): 가는나방亞科(아과)) 및 2未記錄種(미기록종) 보고)

  • In this study, genus Aristaea Meyrick, 1907 and two species, A. bathracma (Meyrick, 1912) and A. pavoniella (Zeller, 1847) are reported for the first time from Korea. All the known species are enumerated with their available information. Adults and genitalia of the species are briefly redescribed and illustrated.

  • The activities of esterase and acetylcholinesterase(AChE) on the Diamond backmoth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) and Beet armywarm (BAW), Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and inhibitions of AChE with flupyrazofos were clarified from the results of a series of experiments. These findings are described in brief as follows. The AChE activities of DBM and BAW in heads were $1.5{\sim}11.1{\mu}$mol/g/min in $1st{\sim}4th$ instar larvae of DBM and $1.7{\sim}45.2{\mu}$mol/g/min in $1st{\sim}6th$ instar larvae of BAW, respectively. Those were $25{\sim}30$ times higher in above 4th instar larvae of BAW than that of the 1st instar larvae of DBM. The activities of aliesterase in heads were $1.7{\sim}4.7$ times higher in $2nd{\sim}4th$ instar larvae of DBM and $8{\sim}55$ times higher in $3rd{\sim}6th$ instar larvae of BAW than 1st instar larvae of DBM. In abdomens, those were $3{\sim}17$ times higher in $2nd{\sim}4th$ instar larvae of DBM and $12{\sim}30$ times higher in $3rd{\sim}6th$ instar larvae of BAW than 1st instar larvae of DBM. Median AChE inhibition concentration $(I_{50})$ of flupyrazofos to the 2nd instar larvae of DBM and BAW were 92 nM and $15{\mu}M$, respectively, and those to the 4th instar larvae of DBM and BAW were $1.8{\mu}M$ and 3.1 mM, respectively. Insensitivity ratio of flupyrazofos in the 2nd instar BAW larvae showed ca. 162 times higher than that in the 2nd instar larvae of DBM, and that of the 4th instar BAW larvae showed ca. 1,720 times higher insensitivity to flupyrazofos than that of the 4th instar DBM larvae. AChE activities in the 2nd instar larvae of DBM and BAW at 32 h after applicaton of flupyrazofos decreased from 67.6% to 32.4% of the activity of the untreated control. That of the 4th instar larvae of DBM increased for 0.5 h after application flupyrazofos up to 75% of the untreated control, and after that it decreased to 34.5% of the untreated control at 32 h. In contrast, in the 4th instar larvae of BAW AChE activities increased for 8 h gradually up to 102 % of the activity of the untreated control, and then the activity decreased to 97% of the untreated control at 16 h after treatment.

Trend of temporal change in moth communities in forests of the agricultural landscape of southwestern South Korea (한국 서남부 농촌 경관 내 숲에 서식하는 나방 군집의 시간적 변화 양상)

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate the temporal changes of moth communities in two forest types of the agroecosystem in the southwestern part of Korea, an isolated hillock forest and a continuous mountain forest. Temporal changes in the numbers of moth species and individuals at both forests showed no significant difference, although the numbers of individuals in the isolated hillock forest were decreased. The relationship between changes in moths and body size based on wingspan revealed that the larger moths decreased more in the isolated hillock forest, whereas no effect of body size on change of moths was observed in continuous mountain forest samples. Non-metric multidimensional scaling resulted in the grouping of moth communities by forest types and 10-year time intervals. In the future, long-term monitoring is needed to track the changes in moth communities in agroecosystems. Additionally, we need to investigate the effect of other ecological variables on changes in moth diversity.

Three Microlepidopterous Insects, First Reported as Pests of the Leaf of Non-Astringent Persimmon in Korea (단감 잎 가해 해충으로 국내 처음 보고되는 미소 나방류 3종)

  • In this study, we report three insect pest species of non-astringent persimmon, Pleuroptya chlorophanta, Acria ceramitis, and Choristoneura longicellana, for the first time from Korea. Larvae of these species were collected from an organic farming persimmon orchard in Changwon city, Gyeongnam province, and reared in the laboratory to be identified in 2012. Some information, such as collection records, hosts, simple morphological characteristics, and ecology were introduced for each species.

  • We report three lepidopteran insect pests of non-astringent persimmon leaf for the first time from Korea; Hypocala deflorata (Noctuidae), Teliphasa elegans (Pyralidae), and Cuphodes diospyrosella (Gracillariidae). Larvae of these species were collected from an organic farming or abandoned persimmon orchard in Changwon and Jinju cities, Gyeongnam province, and reared for the identification in the laboratory. Some information, such as collection records, hosts, simple morphological characteristics, and ecology were introduced for each species.

  • Pseudoips fagana Fabricius belongs to the subfamily Chloephorinae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Eggs of Pseudoips fagana were white and oviposited on oak leaves. There were five P. fagana larval instars, which were light green in color with four white crosslines. The larval period was approx. 24.4 days ($25^{\circ}C$, 16L:8D). Pupae were covered with a light-green membrane and silk. The wingspan of adults was approx. 15 to 18 mm. The color of the forewings of both sexes was bright green. The color of the hindwings was yellow in males and and white in females. First emergence was from early May to late June, and the second emergence was from early July to late August. Pseudoips fagana over-wintered as pupae.

  • In this study, the genus Cameraria Chapman, 1902 belonging to the family Gracillariidae is reported for the first time from Korea, with three newly recorded species, Cameraria acericola Kumata, 1963, C. hikosanensis Kumata, 1963 and C. niphonica Kumata, 1963. All the known Korean species are enumerated with their available information. Adults and genitalia of all species are redescribed and illustrated.

  • This paper reports new hosts for three ichneumonids (Apophua evanescens evanescens, Teleutaea minamikawai, and Trathala flavoorbitalis) from South Korea. These three species were discovered from the lepidopteran pupae, viz., Cleora leucophaea (Butler) (Geometridae), Adoxophyes honmai Yasuda (Tortricidae), and Pyrausta phoenicealis (Hübner) (Crambidae), respectively. Among these, the lepidopteran family Geometridae and Crambidae are also newly recorded as host groups for the genera Apophua and Trathala.

Pathogenicities of Beauveria bassiana GY1-17 against Some Agro-forest Insect Pests (수종의 농림해충에 대한 Beauveria bassiana GY1-17 균주의 병원성)

  • Biological control of forest insect pests, Agelastica coeruleci, Meganola n~elancholia,a nd Glyphodes perspectalis, turfgrass insect pest, Blitoperfhu orientr~lis,v egetable insect pests, Plutella xylostella and Agrotis segetun~ with entomopathogenic fungus, Beciuveria hassinna GY 1 - 17 isolated from rice paddy of Yangsan in the southern part of Korea were investigated. Mortalities of A. coeruleu and P. ~ylo.~rellluar vae were 100% at the rate of 7.0 and 2.0 x 107conidia/ml after 7 and 5 days and those of M. melancholia were 66.7 - 100% at the rate of 0.03875-3.1 X 107conidia/ml. However, G. perspectulis was not affected at the rate of 2.0 x lo7 to X I04conidia/ml. And mortalites of B. orientcilis and A. segetum larvae were 46.7% at 3.7 x 107conidia/ml and 63.3% at 2.5 X 107conidia/ml.

Species Composition and Species Diversity of Moths (Lepidoptera) on Quercus mongolica forests sand Pinus densiflora forests, in Korean National Long-term Ecological Research Sites (Mt. Nam, Mt. Jiri, Mt. Wolak) (국가 장기 생태 연구지(남산, 지리산, 월악산)의 신갈나무림과 소나무림에서 포획된 나방류의 종조성 및 종다양도)

  • Moths were collected using a 22W UV black light trap in June through September in 2005 and May, June, August and September in 2006. The study sites were Namsan (Mt. Nam), Jirisan (Mt. Jiri), Woraksan (Mt. Worak) which are part of the Korean National Long Term Ecological Research (KNLTER). There were two common forest communities, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora. The purpose of this study was to compare species diversity of the major plant feeding Lepidoptera in the two forest types at the regional KNLTER sites. We collected a total of 435 species from the KLTER sites in 2005 and 2006. Abundance of moths was highest at Woraksan (Mt. Worak) followed by Jirisan (Mt. Jiri). The Namsan (Mt. Nam) site had the lowest, with five families (Arctiidae, Geometridae, Noctuidae, Notodontidae, and Pyralidae). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant differences at sampling date in species abundance as a response variable and at site in species richness as another response variable. Although we expected a distinct cluster with the forest type at each study site, one of ordination analyses, nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS), showed distinct clusters with the moth assemblages at each site only but NMS did not show any distinct cluster with the different forest types at each site as we expected.
