Lepidopterous Insect Pests on Soy bean (콩의 나방류(아류)해충에 관한 조사)

  • The list of lepidopterous pests on soybean represented in this paper is a result which has been carried out for the survey of insect pests of main crops under the Strengthening Plant Protection Research and Training Project, FAO/UNDP. Forty eight lepidopterous pests which collected on soybean during this period are identified and the general biology of major pests is summarized. Most of materials were collected in the stage of larva, which was injurious stage, on the injurious parts of soybean and reared in the laboratory.

Three Microlepidopterous Insects, First Reported as Pests of the Leaf of Non-Astringent Persimmon in Korea (단감 잎 가해 해충으로 국내 처음 보고되는 미소 나방류 3종)

  • In this study, we report three insect pest species of non-astringent persimmon, Pleuroptya chlorophanta, Acria ceramitis, and Choristoneura longicellana, for the first time from Korea. Larvae of these species were collected from an organic farming persimmon orchard in Changwon city, Gyeongnam province, and reared in the laboratory to be identified in 2012. Some information, such as collection records, hosts, simple morphological characteristics, and ecology were introduced for each species.

  • We report three lepidopteran insect pests of non-astringent persimmon leaf for the first time from Korea; Hypocala deflorata (Noctuidae), Teliphasa elegans (Pyralidae), and Cuphodes diospyrosella (Gracillariidae). Larvae of these species were collected from an organic farming or abandoned persimmon orchard in Changwon and Jinju cities, Gyeongnam province, and reared for the identification in the laboratory. Some information, such as collection records, hosts, simple morphological characteristics, and ecology were introduced for each species.

Control Effects of different Concentrations and Mixtures of the commercial Bacillus thuringiensis Products against Moths (Bacillus thuringiensis 제품의 농도 및 혼합 조건에 따른 나방류 방제 효과)

  • Beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua), diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) and tobacco cutworm (S. litura) are insect pests causing damage in many economically important vegetables in Korea. Bacillus thuringiensis, commonly known as Bt, has been available as an alternative insecticide for many years. Five commercial Bt products and the mixtures evaluate the control efficacy against three kinds of moths. These commercial Bt products had high control efficacy against $2^{nd}$ instar of diamondback moth, but didn't show high mortality against beet armyworm and tobacco cutworm. Mixtures of Bt products didn't have synergistic effects to the tested moths. Also application of twice and four times the recommended concentration didn't improve the control effects against the tested three species of moths.

Occurrence of Lepidopteran Insects in Urban Forests (생활권 가로수를 기주로 하는 나비목 곤충의 발생양상)

  • In order to establish an effective pest control strategy, we investigated the occurrence of lepidopteran insects in the major trees growing in urban forests from 2019 to 2021. In total, we recorded 76 species of 14 families in Prunus spp., 40 species of eight families in Acer spp., 43 species of 10 families in Zelkova serrata, 28 species of seven families in Rhododendron spp., and 10 species of four families in Hibiscus syriacus. Among these, Hyphantria cunea and Lymantria dispar were recorded from all five tree taxa monitored. The most frequently occurring species in the different tree groups were as follows: H. cunea and Phalera flavescens in Prunus yedoensis, Epinotia ulmicola in Z. serrata, and Rehimena surusalis in H. syriacus. H. cunea also occurred in Rhododendron spp. and Acer spp., although the numbers were lower than those recorded in Prunus spp. and Z. serrata. Our results highlight the importance of focusing on the frequency of occurrence of lepidopteran insects in Prunus spp. and Z. serrata, whereas the presence of these insects in both Acer spp. and Rhododendron spp. Appears to be less problematic. From the perspective of reducing the risks to human health, our findings indicate that the application of pheromones for monitoring lepidopteran species and the use of mating disruptors would be desirable approaches that would contribute to minimizing the spraying of pesticides in urban forests.

Status of the Occurrence of Insect Pests and Their Natural Enemies in Soybean Fields in Honam Province (호남지역 콩 재배지 주요해충 및 천적류)

  • This survey was conducted to illustrate insect pests and their natural enemies in soybean fields in Honam area. A total of 23 pest species in 13 families and 13 species of natural enemy were observed during 2002 to 2003. Delia platura, Medythia nigrobilineata, Spodoptera exigua and Aphis glycines occurred relatively with high population densities during the early growth stage of soybean. Dolycoris baccarum, Riptortus clavatus, Nezara antennata, Piezodorus hybneri and Halyomorpha halys began to occur between mid July to early August and lasted until the harvest time. Lepidopteran insect pests, Leguminivora glycinivorella, Pleuroptya ruralis, Scopula missaria, Macdunnoughia purissima and Spodoptera litura occurred significantly in late August in soybean field. Natural enemies of soybean insect pests observed in this survey were seven parasitoids, five predators, and an entomopahogenic fungus. Two egg parasitoid species for R. clavatus, two parasitoid species for P. ruralis, and five natural enemy species (including parasite, predator and entomopathogenic fungi) for either S. litura or A. glycines were identified, respectively. Among them two egg parasitoid species, Gryon japonicum and Ooenyrtus nezarae for R. clavatus, for and one parasitoid species for P. ruralis, that belong to Bethylidae, were new to Korea.

Life cycle of Kunugia yamadai Nagano (Lepidoptera, Lasiocampidae) in Korea (도토리나방(나비목, 솔나방과)의 생활사)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the life cycle of Kunugia yamadai Nagano attacking Qriercrrs spp. in Chungju area, Korea during 1987-1989. The moth had one generation a year. Host plants of the species were Quercus acutissima, Q. serrata, Q. aliena, and Castanea crenata. And Q. dentata T., and Q variahilis B. were newly recognized as host plants of the insect. Young larvae were hatched from the overwintered eggs and fed on the leaves from late April to early August which took ahout 3 months. In mid-August, the fully grown larva made a rough cocoon and pupated at the ground debris or dense grass. The moths emerged from September to late October with a peak around mid-October. Female oviposited 121 eggs on average mostly on the bark of host plants at 131 cm ahove the ground.
