  • Thirty-eight Pea (Pisum sativum L.) genotypes were screened to identify varieties to be suitable for sprout. Based on seed yield and sprout qualities such as whole length and sprout yield, five genotypes (PI269803, PI343278, PI343283, PI343300 and PI 343307) were primarily selected as candidates for pea sprouts. In order to determine optimal cultivation condition for pea sprouting, growth characteristics were investigated according to the change of germination temperature and days for sprouting. Whole length and hypocotyl length were observed to increase as a time dependent manner at each tested temperature (20, 23, and $25^{\circ}C$). However, whole length, hypocotyl length, and sprout yield were highly increased at $23^{\circ}C$ compared to 20 and $25^{\circ}C$. Especially, PI269803 and PI343300 showed higher sprout yield than the others. In addition, the effect of the change of germination temperature on antioxidant properties was estimated by measuring total phenolic content (TPC) and free radical scavenging activity (DPPH and ABST activity). TPC and DPPH/ABST activities of PI269803 and PI343300 were higher at $23^{\circ}C$ than at 20 and $25^{\circ}C$, while antioxidant properties of PI343278 and PI343283 were decreased in a temperature-dependent manner. The results show a high degree of correlation between TPC and antioxidant activities and suggest that the temperature change for pea sprouting could be responsible for antioxidant properties. Taken together, these results provide optimal cultivation conditions for pea sprouting and suggest that PI269803 and PI343300 with high sprout yield and antioxidant properties could be used for pea sprouts.

  • The genus Sedum comprises about 400 taxa with worldwide distribution, and about 20 taxa of the genus Phedimus distributed from Asia to Europe. According to some taxonomists, Phedimus and Sedum are two separate genera of the family Crassulaceae; however, in Korea Phedimus has been treated as a subgenus Aizoon within the genus Sedum. This ambiguous taxonomic treatment of the genus Phedimus needs further confirmation. In the study, we investigated morphological characteristics such as the whole plant height, leaf morphology, and seed coat features of these two genera. We believe that these characters are very important to distinguish Phedimus and Sedum. The result indicated that the seed surface pattern was the most useful diagnostic character. The Sedum had a hexagonal pattern with a single nipple protrusion, whereas the Phedimus had a rectangular pattern with papilla on both ends. The results of this study strongly support the separation of Phedimus from Sedum and thus Phedimus need to be treated as an independent genus.

  • The morphology and somatic chromosome numbers of Korean Parasenecio were investigated to estimate their taxonomic values. Some morphological characters, such as the length of whole plants, the numbers of cauline leaves, the shapes of leaf and petioles, the numbers of involucral bracts, floret numbers per head, presence of trichomes on the style, ratio between wide part and narrow part of floret and the size of achene were found to be a good characters for delimiting each taxa. Based upon these characters, six taxa, Parasenecio auriculala var. auriculata, P. auriculata var. kamtschatica, P. hastata subsp. orientalis, P. koraiensis, P. firmus, P. pseudotaimingasa, were recognized about their distribution in Korea, but 2 taxa, P. adenostyloides, P. auriculata var. matsumurana, were needed to be studied their taxonomic position and distribution in Korea. The somatic chromosome numbers of six taxa, P. adenostyloides, P. auriculata, P. auriculata var. kamtschatica, P. hastata subsp. orientalis, P. firmus, P. pseudotaimingasa were 2n=60 and those of P. firmus and P. pseudotaimingasa were reported first in this study.

  • Pimpinella brachycarpa, a summer-green perennial herb, is narrowly distributed in the moist forest floors. We investigated environmental characteristics and growth patterns of Pimpinella brachycarpa depending on the microenvironment in Mt. Jeombong located in the central part of Korea. P. brachycarpa populations were located at an altitude of 978~1016 m and the average atmospheric humidity hovered at 80 percent. Also, it was found that the soil moisture content was remarkably high, 26.7%, in the populations; organic matter 11.1~11.7%; the nitrate nitrogen 0.60%; available phosphorus 19.5~39.0 ppm; CEC $20.8{\sim}21.3cmolckg^{-1}$; soil pH 4.7~4.8 respectively. In case of growth pattern, the shoot length of individuals under the improved light condition in the sunny forest was statistically longer than in the dense forest. Therefore, we presumed that high humidity and ample soil moisture are abiotic factors of the growth of P. brachycarpa and that the amount of light affects the relative growth rate of individuals.

  • Traditionally mungbean(Vigna radiata L.) sprouts has been eaten soon after washing. The study was carried out to measure the effect of washing before packaging on morphological characters and color of mungbean sprouts. The seeds of cv. Zhong Lu 1 were soaked in 50 ppm BA solution immediately before 4 hour aeration and then cultured for 6 days. The sprouts were washed immediately before packaged with PE envelops or not, and then stored 5 days at $8^{\circ}C$. Their morphological characters, fresh and dry weights, and colors were measured everyday. Compared to washed, nonwashed sprouts had more lateral roots although the two sprouts did nearly same in hypocotyl and root lengths, hypocotyl diameter, fresh and dry weights. Non-washed sprouts, moreover, showed higher brightness in hypocotyl and root and cutting resistance in hypocotyl although there were not significant differences in color a and b, meaning that the latter ones were more rapidly changed during their storage. In non-washed sprouts, number of lateral roots, hypocotyl length and diameter, total fresh and dry weights were nearly same up to 3 days and afterward were declined. Brightness and color b of hypocotyl were decreased with increased storage period although cutting resistance of hypocotyl was since 3 days after storage.
