In order to investigate the biological activity of protoberberine derivatives, they were synthesized four derivatives (1-4) of 7,8 adduct of cycloberberine, two derivatives (5, 6) treated with alkylamine or phenylamine, four compounds (7, 8) and (9, 10) adduct with 1,3-dichloroacetone and oxalychloride. Antibacterial activity of these synthesized compounds was tested.

Development of 3,700 folds resistance to etoxazole was found in the population of twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, collected from rose greenhouses in Buyo, Chungnam Provience in August 2000. This population was selected for 3yr with etoxazole to get 5,000,000 folds increase in resistance as compared to susceptible (S) strain. The etoxazole resistance was stablized for 16 months under the condition of no acaricide application. Inheritance and cross resistance in etoxazole to some acaricides of the etoxazole resistance strain (R) were investigated. There were differences of susceptibility in the etoxazole concentration-mortality relationships between $F_1$, $F_2$ progenies obtained from reciprocal cross with the S and R strains (R$_{♂}$${\times}$S$_{♂}$${\times}$R$_{♂}$). Degrees of dominance were 0.98 and 0.98 in $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of R$_{♂}$${\times}$S$_{♂}$, and -0.97 and -0.68 in $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of S$_{♀}$${\times}$R$_{♂}$ respectively. Inheritance in $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of R$_{♀}$${\times}$S$_{♂}$ were complete dominant. However $F_1$ and $F_2$ progenies of S$_{♀}$${\times}$R$_{♂}$ were incomplete recessive. These results suggest that inheritance of etoxazole resistance is controlled by a complete dominance. The R strain exhibited cross resistance to acequinocyl and emamectin benzoates in adult females, and milbemectin, amitraz and pyridaben in eggs. However they showed negatively correlated cross-resistance to bifenazate, a carbazate acaricide. These results may indicate bifenazate could be useful for the control of etoxazole resistant T. urticae population.

${\beta}$ thalassemias are usually transmitted as autosomal recessive traits. However, some dominant forms of ${\beta}$ thalassemia have been identified in individuals who have inherited a single copy of an abnormal ${\beta}$ globin gene. Thalassemia intermedia with mild anemia, jaundice, and splenomegaly has been observed in these patients. Electrophoresis has shown elevated Hemoglobin(Hb) $A_2$ and Hb F levels. In particular, there are inclusion bodies in the erythroid precursors and peripheral red blood cells after splenectomy. The molecular basis of these dominant ${\beta}$ thalassemias is heterogeneous. The authors studied the first Korean case of dominantly inherited ${\beta}$ thalassemia due to Hb Dieppe. Hb Dieppe is a missense mutation of ${\beta}$ codon $127(CAG{\rightarrow}CGG)Gln{\rightarrow}Arg$. The patient in this case was characterized by moderate anemia, hypochromia, microcytosis, elevated Hb $A_2$ levels, elevated Hb F levels and splenomegaly. The father of the patient also has the same disease. We report this case and review related literature.

The purpose of this study is to see the effect of SVE (Soil Vapor Extraction) and Bioventing (biostimulation) hydrocarbon contaminated areas. The removal rate of VOC for three weeks were 17.43 kg on 3.6 ㎥/hr at steady-state. In the application of Bioventing, every flow rate were tested, and it was found that 4.0 ㎥/hr were adequate for best control of the system. At this stage, the addition of microbial agent accelerated the biodegradation of the hydrocarbon.

The color of textile-wastewater hindered spectrometric measurements of $H_2O_2$ and enzyme activity during enzymatic decoloring. By using ABTS, we developed a new method for measuring peroxidase activity and $H_2O_2$ concentration. The ratio of enzyme and $H_2O_2$ was optimized as 1:150 by investigating the effects of $H_2O_2$ on enzymatic decoloring. Pulse feeding of $H_2O_2$, upon depletion, significantly increased the decoloring of Congo Red.
