Estimation of Strain for Large Deformation in SMA-textile Actuator Using Nonlinear Geometry Analysis (비선형 기하해석을 이용한 SMA 섬유 액츄에이터의 대변형에 대한 변형률 추정)

  • Shape memory alloy (SMA)-textile actuators have attracted significant attention across various fields, including soft robotics and wearable technology. These smooth actuators are developed by combining SMA and simple textile fibers and then knitting them into two loop patterns known as the knit (K-loop) and plain (P-loop) patterns. Both loops are distinguished by opposite bending characteristics owing to loop head geometry. However, the knitting processes for these actuator sheets require expertise and time, resulting in high production costs for knitted loop actuation sheets. This study introduces a novel method by which to assess the strain in SMA textile-based actuators, which experience large deformations when subjected to voltage. Owing to the highly nonlinear constitutive equations of the SMA material, developing an analytical model for numerical analysis is challenging. Therefore, this study employs a novel approach that utilizes a linear constitutive equation to analyze large deformations in SMA material with nonlinear geometry considerations. The user-defined material (UMAT) subroutine integrates the linear constitutive equation into the ABAQUS software suite. This equivalent unit cell (EUC) model is validated by comparing the experimental bending actuation results of K-loops and P-loops.

An Evaluation for Structural Performance of Suspension Bridge by using the Natural Frequency of Hanger Member (행거의 고유진동수를 이용한 현수교의 구조적 성능 평가)

  • As a special infrastructure, it is important that the suspension bridges which were designed by using the cable are carefully maintained and safely inspected after their construction, more than what is done in other cases of bridge structures. However, the structural analysis for their design and maintenance has considered only the simplified geometric shape of the structure. Particularly, it is not easy to make the modeling analyze the bridge structure including detailed steel deck plates. In this paper, we evaluated the structural behaviors and performances of the completed earth-anchored suspension bridge that was in a completed state through both the tension of hanger member and their computational analysis. We considered the frame system and the detailed steel deck plates that were especially added into the modeling to take more precision analysis about it. We also applied hanger tensions converted by the natural frequency and the natural frequency of the bridge when in normal vibration. Results of the vehicle loading test were used in the analysis. We compared the results by using our modeling with the result of the loading test and the hanger tension. Our prediction on the behavior of the structure emulates the behavior of the real structure. In applying the data measured by the typhoon "Maemi" which arrived in-land last year, we confirmed our analysis model for the possibility of applying effectively into the preliminary design and maintenance plan.

Aeroelastic Tailoring of a Forward-Swept Wing Using One-dimensional Beam Analysis (1차원 보 해석을 활용한 전진익 항공기의 복합적층 날개 공력탄성학적 테일러링)

  • Foward-swept wings are known to possess superior aerodynamic performance compared to the conventional straight wings. However major concerns regarding forward-swept wings include divergence at lower airspeeds which require careful consideration at the design stage. As an endeavor to overcome such drawbacks, aeroelastic tailoring is attempted. In order to find an optimal ply sequence, recursive aeroelastic analyses is conducted and one-dimensional beam analysis coupled with simple aerodynamics is used for the improved computational efficiency and modelling convenience. The analysis used in this paper, DYMORE and analytic formula, both use one-dimensional beam model for the structure. Cross-sectional analysis for multi-cell NACA0015 airfoil section is conducted using VABS and oblique function is used for the sweep angle. Throughout the present aeroelastic tailoring, the maximum divergence speed of 290.2m/s is achieved which is increased by approximately 43% than that for the conventional ply configuration.

Cortical bone strain during the placement of orthodontic microimplant studied by 3D finite element analysis (3차원 유한요소법을 이용한 교정용 마이크로임플란트 식립 시의 피질골 스트레인 해석)

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the strain induced in the cortical bone surrounding an orthodontic microimplant during insertion. Methods: A 3D finite element method was used to model the insertion of a microimplant (AbsoAnchor SH1312-7, Dentos Co., Daegu, Korea) Into 1 mm thick cortical bone with a pre-drilled hole of 0.9 mm in diameter. A total of 1,800 analysis steps was used to simulate the 10 turns and 5 mm advancement of the microimplant. A series of remesh in the cortical bone was allowed to accommodate the change in the geometry accompanied by the implant insertion. Results: Bone strains of well higher than 4,000 microstrain, the reported upper limit for normal bone remodeling, was observed in the bone along the whole length of the microimplant. At the bone in the vicinity of the screw tip, strains of higher than 100% was recorded. The insertion torque was calculated at approximately 1.2 Ncm which was slightly lower than those measured from the animal experiment using rabbit tibias. Conclusions: The insertion process of a microimplant was successfully simulated using the 3D finite element method which showed that bone strains from a microimplant insertion might have a negative impact on physiological remodeling of bone.

Simulation of the High Frequency Hyperthermia for Tumor Treatment (종양치료용 고주파 열치료 인체적용 시뮬레이션)

  • Hyperthermia supplies RF high-frequency energy above 1MHz to the tumor tissue through the electrodes. And the temperature of the tumor tissue is increased to $42^{\circ}C$ or more to cause thermal necrosis. A mathematical model can be derived a human body model for absorption and transmission of electromagnetic energy in the human model and It is possible to evaluate the distribution of temperature fields in biological tissues. In this paper, we build the human model based on the adult standard model of the geometric shape of the 3D model and use the FVM code. It is assumed that Joule heat is supplied to the anatomical model to simulate the magnetic field induced by the external electrode and the temperature distribution was analyzed for 0-1,200 seconds. As a result of the simulation, it was confirmed that the transferred energy progressively penetrates from the edge of the electrode to the pulmonary tumors and from the skin surface to the subcutaneous layer.
