  • This paper provides background theories and numerical results of automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation for freeform discrete structures. The present method adopts the computer aided geometric design (CAGD) technique to overcome the limitation of case-sensitive traditional automatic FE mesh generator. The present technique involves two steps. The first one is to represent the shape of the structure using the geometric model based on the CAGD and the second one is to generate the discrete FE mesh of spatial structures over the geometric model. From numerical results, it is found to be that the present technique is very easy to produce the FE mesh for free-form spatial structures and it can also reuse some features of traditional automatic mesh generator in the process. Furthermore, it shows the possibility to be used for the shape optimization of large spatial structures.

  • We investigate the fundamental mechanisms of the dynamic instability when the sinusoidal shaped arch structures subjected to sinusoidal harmonic excitation with pin-ends. In nonlinear dynamics, examining the characteristics of attractor on the phase plane and investigating the dynamic buckling process are very important thing for understanding why unstable phenomena are sensitively originated by various initial conditions. In this study, the direct and the indirect snap-buckling of shallow arches considering geometrical nonlinearity are investigated numerically and compared with the step excitation critical load.

  • In this study, a geometric nonlinear analysis formulation for spatial frames is developed using the 3D stability functions. For the formulation, the relationships of local and global coordinate systems in force, deformation, and the initial and current configurations of a frame are derived. The force-deformation relationship in global coordinate system is derived as well. The developed formulation is verified in each derivation by reducing the derived equations into 2D equations. The gradual plastification of connections and critical sections can be implemented effectively to this formulation for the complete second order inelastic advanced analysis of spatial frames.

  • The finite element analysis of plate and shell structures has been one of the major research interests for many years because of the technological importance of such structures. Quite often these structures are constructed by laminated composites. This is due to the high specific stiffness and strength of composite structures. The main objective of this paper is to extend the use of an improved degenerated shell element to the large displacement analysis of plates and shells with laminated composites. The total Lagrangian approach has been chosen for the definition of the deformation and the solution to the nonlinear equilibrium equations is obtained by the Newton-Raphson method.

  • This paper introduces a geometric modelling system adopted in a newly developed preprocessor for finite element analysis of three dimensional structures. The formulation is characterized by hierarchical construction of structural model which consists of control points, curves, surfaces and solids. Various surface and solid modeling schemes based on blending functions and boundary representation are systematized for finite element mesh generation. The modeling system is integrated with model synthesis and operations which facilitate modelling of complex structures.

  • Extensive numerical experiments have been carried out to investigate effect of block size and fracture geometry on hydraulic characteristics of fractured rock masses based on connected pipe flow in DFN systems. Using two fracture sets, a total of 72 2-D fracture configurations were generated with different combinations of fracture size distribution and deterministic fracture density. The directional block conductivity including the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity for each generated fracture network system were calculated using the 2-D equivalent pipe network method. There exist significant effects of block size, orientation, density and size of fractures in a fractured rock mass on its hydraulic behavior. We have been further verified that it is more difficult to reach the REV size for the fluid flow network with decreasing intersection angle of two fracture sets, fracture plane density and fracture size distribution.

  • In this paper a nonlinear analysis of three-dimensional steel frames is developed. This analysis accounts for material and geometric nonlinearities. The material nonlinearity includes gradual yielding associated with flexural behaviors. The geometric nonlinearity includes the second-order effects associated with $P-{\delta}\;and\;P-{\Delta}$ effects. The material nonlinearity at the node is considered using the concept of P-M hinge consisting of many fibers. The geometric nonlinearity is considered by the use of stability function. The nonlinearity caused by shear and torsional interaction effects is neglected. The modified incremental displacement method is used as the solution technique. The load-displacements predicted by the proposed analysis compare well with those given by other approaches.

  • Textile composite materials have been widely applied in aerospace structures due to their various advantages such as high specific stiffnesses and strengths, better out-of-plane performances, impact and delamination resistances, and net shape fabrications. In this paper, a modified geometric model of repeating unit cell (RUC) is suggested based on the Naik's model for 2D plain weave textile composites. The RUC geometry is defined by various parameters. The proposed model considers another parameter which is a gap length between adjacent yarns. The effective stiffnesses are predicted by using the yarn slicing technique and stress averaging technique based on iso-strain assumption. And the stiffnesses of RUC are evaluated by adjusting the gap ratio and verified by comparing with Naik's model and experimental data for 2D plain weave composite specimens.

  • In this paper, a geometric nonlinear analysis procedure of the beam-column element including multi-noded cable element in extension of companion paper (Kim et al., 2005) is presented. First, a stiffness matrix was derived about the beam-column element that considers the second effect of the initial force supposing the curved shape at each time-step, with Hermitian polynomials as the shape function. Second, the multi-noded cable element was also subjected to the tangent stiffness matrix. To verify the geometric nonlinearity of this newly developed multi-noded cable-truss element, the Innovative Prestressed Support (IPS) system using this theory was analysed by geometric nonlinear method and the results were compared with those produced by linear analysis.
