In most tunnel constructions in South Korea, blasting has been widely used as an excavation method. In tunnel blasting, the center-cut to induce first free surface is very important for enhancing excavation efficiency and reducing vibration caused by exploding. This paper introduces new center-cut method named SAV-cut (Stage Advance V-cut) developed on the concept of V-cut. Significant features of SAV-cut are the center hole and stepwise ignition. Many field tests and numerical analysis were carried out to analyze the mechanical behavior and blasting vibration. From the results, the newly developed SAV-cut was proved as an effective center-cut method for both increasing blasting efficiency and decreasing blasting vibration.

Kinetic energy(KE) rod warhead system is a new interceptor which combines advantages of existing ones. This system is less dependant on a precision guidance than direct hit type warhead and gives high penetration rates than blast fragmentation type warhead. In this paper, isotropic KE rod warhead system is introduced with detonation/deployment model. A penetration effects of the deployed rods are calculated using TATE penetration equation. Also, an engagement performance analysis method is suggested. Finally, an optimal detonation time and engagement geometry is derived by Monte-Carlo simulation in various engagement situation using the performance analysis factor.

We presented a hydrodynamic modeling necessary to accurately reproduce shock-induced detonation of pyrotechnic initiator. The methodology for such numerical prediction of shock propagation is quite straight forward if the models are properly implemented and solved in a well-formulated shock physics code. A series of SSGT(Small Scale Gap Test) and detailed hydrodynamic simulation are conducted to quantify the shock sensitivity of an acceptor that contains 97.5% RDX. A TBI(Through Bulkhead Initiator) system, consisting of a train configuration of Donor(HNS+HMX) - Bulkhead(STS) - Acceptor(RDX), were investigated to further validate the interaction between energetic and non-reactive materials for predicting the detonating response for successful operation of such small pyro device.

A non-lethal weapon is a device that can subdue targets without causing death or mortal wounds. A high-intensity flash generator can negate electro-optical sensors and cause temporal flash blindness with a high intensity of light. In this study, we derive the design parameters of an explosive-driven high-intensity flash generator that uses the interaction of plasma caused by the detonation of explosives with surrounding inert gas. To determine the design parameters of the flash generator, we analyze test results measured using optical sensors. The experimental results show that the light intensity of xenon gas is about four times higher than that of air. In addition, the intensity increases with the weight of the explosive, and the inert gas cross-sectional area encountered a shock wave in the airframe. The light intensity caused by a double-initiation generator is about two times higher than that of the single-initiation generator.
In this study, a charging density has been differently applied to all holes to improve an excavated length per round on excavating a tunnel in quartzite mine and to prevent a dead pressure phenomena and sintering phenomena. A composition initiating system using simultaneously a direct initiating system and a indirect initiating system with 2 detonators in one hole has been introduced to cut holes. As a bottom part which is difficult to make a free face are charged with a higher charging density and a column part are charged with a lower charging density, the composition charging and initiating system which the power of explosives works effectively in the rock mass is developed. As the results, a dead pressure phenomena and a sintering phenomena being often produced in a hard rock or in a long hole could be prevented. Besides, the workability was improved by about 15% and the specific charge was reduced to about 20%, as an excavated length vs. a drilled length per round could be increased over 95%.

In this paper, we propose measurement based numerical resistivity model for low energy exploding foil initiator (LEEFI) of electronic safety and arming device(ESAD). A resistivity model describes a behavior of variable resistance in LEEFI by firing current. The previous resistivity model was based on high energy detonator applications as explosive bridge wire and exploding foil initiator. Therefore, to estimate the voltage, current, and burst time of LEEFI, a resistivity model suitable for LEEFI is needed. For the modeling of resistivity of LEEFI, we propose a specific action based equation which represents a behavior of LEEFI when firing current is applied. To verify the proposed model, we analyze a firing current transmission path to obtain parasitic impedance. We experimentally verify that the proposed resistivity model offers precise estimation for the behavior of variable resistance in LEEFI.

This case study is concerned with the project of the explosive demolition for the KOGAS office building located in Bundang district in Seongnam city. Since the office building was a kind of long-span beam structures, a mechanical demolition method using jacking support systems was considered in the beginning of the project. With consideration of the excessive reinforcement cost, uncertainty of safety, and prolonged construction period, however, the original plan was later changed to use an explosive demolition method. For the purpose of protecting nearby buildings and facilities during the collapse process, the explosive initiation sequence was elaborately designed to bring down the building structure towards its front left corner. A total of over 550 electronic detonators (Unitronic 600) was used to sequentially initiate the explosives installed at appropriate columns in the first, second, and fifth floors. To diminish dust production, water bags of small and large sizes were respectively installed at each column and on the floors to be blasted. As such, every effort was exercised to mitigate overall noise, dust, and shock vibrations that could be generated during the explosive demolition process for the office building.
Waste explosives such as useless ammunition discharged from the military and coproduced useless explosives during the manufacturers production process have been continuously produced. These are difficult to dispose with normal waste treatment facilities due to the dangers of fire and explosion. An open burning or an open detonation at military designated disposal facilities is a classical treatment method for the dangerous explosives. The classical method raises various environmental problems by the emission of hazardous materials. An air pollution by the emission of hazardous gases such as SOx and NOx, soil and water contaminations by the accumulation of non-biodegradable heavy metals, are representative pollution examples. To overcome these problems, various processes for eco-friendly waste treatment methods have been developed, and some processes have already been operated in some countries. In the current report, various eco-friendly disposal processes for waste explosives or harmful materials, and their advantages and disadvantages are documented to suggest future development directions for reducing the hazardous substances by the treatment processes.

Two steam explosion experiments were performed in the TROI facility by using metal-added molten corium (core material) which is produced during a postulated severe accident in the nuclear reactor. A triggered steam explosion occurred in a case, but no triggered steam explosion did in the other case. The dynamic pressure and the dynamic load measured in the former experiment show a stronger explosion that those performed previously with oxidic corium. A steam explosion is prohibited when the melt temperature is low, because the melt is easily solidified to prevent a liquid-liquid interaction.
