A fluidized bed combustion chamber is widely used to incinerate waste material. The most important factor designing the incinerator is the flow characteristics in a fluidized bed, because combustion efficiency is influenced by the flow characteristics. This paper has invesitigated the flow characteristics of bubbles in fluidized bed by means of meassuring a pressure fluctuation in the fluidized bed. A pressure probe system has used to measure the pressure. The data concerned with bubble rising velocity, bubble size, distribution of bubbles and frequency of bubble generation or decay are obtained to find the flow characteristics of bubbles in the fluidized bed. The result obtained from this experimental study can be used to design the fuel feeding system of fluidized bed combustion type incinerator. And it is possible to predict the mixing of waste material and fluidizing material.

The experimental study on the shape and behavior of bubbles in U-tube deep shaft of 32m has been performed. According to the results in this paper, the equivalent spherical diameter of bubbles was 0.422-0.722cm and the shape of bubbles was almost ellipsoidal for bubbles to be generated ta single-orifice of diameter 0.06cm in the downcomer of the deep shaft system. Gas hold-up and gas-liquid contact area of bubbles in the deep shaft was decreased in accordance with depth, Also downcomer velocity of bubbles was slower than circulation velocity of liquid and riser velocity of bubbles was fast than circulation velocity. The bubble-size-distribution of bubbles in the deep shaft was the logarithmic probability distribution. The number of bubbles in the deep shaft was decreased in accordance with depth and the number of bubbles in the downcomer is more than the bubbles in the riser.
The effect of internal and shroud nozzle distributor to bubbling fluidized beds which has the size of $0.3m-ID{\times}2.4m-high$ column was modeled by CPFD (Computational Particle-Fluid Dynamics). Metal-grade silicon particles (MG-Si) were used as bed materials which have $d_p=149{\mu}m$, ${\rho}_p=2,325kg/m^3$ and $U_{mf}=0.02m/s$. Total bed inventory and static bed height were 75 kg and 0.8 m, respectively. Effect of vertical internal on the bubble rising velocity was investigated. Bubbles were split by internal when the axial position of the internal from the distributor, z = 0.45 m. Bed pressure drop and axial solid holdup were not affected by internal. However, in the case that axial distance of internal from distributor was too close to jet penetration length, bubbles were not separated and bypassed internal, and faster than without internal or z = 0.45 m.

New and renewable energy sources have drawn attention because of climate change. Many studies have been carried out in waste-to-energy field. Fast pyrolysis of waste lignocelluosic biomass is one of the waste-to-energy technologies. Bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) reactor is widely used for fast pyrolysis of the biomass. In BFB pyrolyzer, bubble behavior influences on the chemical reaction. Accordingly, in the present study, hydrodynamic characteristics and fast pyrolysis reaction of waste lignocellulosic biomass occurring in a BFB pyrolyzer are scrutinized. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the fast pyrolysis reactor is carried out by using Eulerian-Granular approach. And two-stage semi-global kinetics is applied for modeling the fast pyrolysis reaction of waste lignocellulosic biomass. To summarize, generation and ascendant motion of bubbles in the bed affect particle behavior. Thus biomass particles are well mixed with hot sand and consequent rapid heat transfer occurs from sand to biomass particles. As a result, primary reaction is observed throughout the bed. And reaction rate of tar formation is the highest. Consequently, tar accounts for 66wt.% of the product gas. However, secondary reaction occurs mostly in the freeboard. Therefore, it is considered that bubble behavior and particle motions hardly influences on the secondary reaction.
Characteristics of bubble driven wakes were investigated in a simulated GTL process(0.102 m ${\times}$ 1.5 m in height) with viscous liquid medium. Effects of gas velocity(0.04 ~ 0.12 m/s) and liquid viscosity(0.001 ~ 0.050 $Pa{\cdot}s$) on the wake characteristics such as rising velocity, frequency, size and holdup were determined by employing a resistivity probe method. The wake phase formed behind the rising multi-bubbles as well as single bubbles were detected effectively from the conductivity fluctuations measured by the probe. Compressed, filtered and regulated air and aqueous solutions of Carboxy Methyl Cellulose(CMC) were used as a dispersed gas phase and a continuous liquid medium, respectively. It was found that the rising velocity and size of wake phase increased with an increase in gas velocity or liquid viscosity. The holdup and frequency of wake phase increased with increasing gas velocity due to the increase of gas input into the process with increasing gas velocity. However, the values of holdup and frequency of wake phase decreased with increasing liquid viscosity, since the size of bubbles and thus that of wakes increased with increasing liquid viscosity. The ratio of wake holdup to that of gas phase, which was in the range of 0.25 ~ 0.48, increased with an increase in liquid viscosity but decreased with gas velocity. The wake characteristics were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions.
Holdup characteristics of small bubbles were investigated in a viscous slurry bubble column. The phase holdup of small bubbles was obtained from the knowledge of total bubble(gas) holdup and large bubble holdup, which were measured by mean of static pressure drop method and dual resistivity probe method, respectively. Effects of gas velocity, viscosity of continuous liquid phase and solid fraction in the slurry phase on the small bubble holdup as well as holdups of total bubble(gas) and large bubble in a viscous slurry bubble column. The small bubble holdup increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid viscosity or solid fraction in the slurry phase. In addition the fraction of small bubble in the total bubble(gas) holdup increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid viscosity or solid fraction in the slurry phase. It was revealed that the rising velocity of large bubble did not related to the holdup of small bubble in a viscous slurry bubble column.

In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. The velocity of upward bubble flow was calculated for two different experimental conditions:1) bubble flow without kinetic energy 2) bubble flow with kinetic energy. Bubble flow without kinetic energy starts to undergo the effect of buoyancy l0cm away from the nozzle. Whereas. kinetic energy is dominant before 30 cm away from the nozzle in bubble flow but after this point kinetic energy and inertial force are applied on bubble flow at the same time In addition, as the flow rate increases the maximum velocity point moves to the nozzle. The velocity Profiles near free surface is extremely irregular due to surface flow. Gas volume fraction is high near the nozzle due to gas concentration. but decreases with the increasement of axial position. Gas volume fraction does not vary after the axial position, z=60 in spite of the increasement of flow.

In the present study, a PIV measurement and image processing technique were applied in order to investigate the flow characteristics in the gas injected liquid bath. The circulation of liquid was induced by upward bubble flow. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was well developed near both wall sides than in the center of a bath. The vortex flow irregularly repeated generation and disappearance which helped to accelerate the mixing process. The bubble rise velocity in the bottom region was relatively lower than in the upper region because the energy generated by bubbles' behavior in the region near the nozzle was almost converted into kinetic energy But bubble rise velocity increases with the increase of the axial distance since kinetic energy of rising bubbles is added to buoyancy force. In conclusion, the flow increased bubble rise velocity and the flow of the bottom region became more active.

The gas hold-up has a strong relationship with the size distribution and rising velocities of bubbles in a bubble column. Therefore, many previous researchers have studied on the hydrodynamics focusing on the bubble size variation in bubble column. In this study, the bubble behavior was influenced by partitioning porous plates installed at a certain height in a trayed bubble column. The gas hold-up was increased in non-sparging region (H/D > 5) as well as sparging region. We identified the effect of the partitioning porous plate using three trayed bubble columns with different reactor geometries. Furthermore, the bubble break-up frequency and size distribution were observed before and after individual bubbles penetrated through the plate. The arrangement of the plates was also investigated using a 0.15-m-in-diameter bubble column. Based on the result, we applied this design concept to a 0.36-m-in-diameter, 22 m tall trayed bubble column and identified the effect of the partitioning porous plate on the gas hold-up increase.
The concentration ranges forming surface excess of bovine serum albumin(BSA) and ovalbumin solutions were determined, and the factors affecting the foam separation of BSA were investigated. The surface tension of BSA solution decreased from 72 to 61 dynelcm, when the concentration changed from $5{\times}10^{-3}$ to $3{\times}10^{-2}%$, and the critical micelle concentration was appeared to be at 0.03% of BSA. At the isoelectric point (pH 4.9) of BSA, the foamate volume was maximum, but enrichment ratio was minimum, resulting in the maximum recovery rate. When the pH deviated from the isoelectric point, the foamate volume decreased and the enrichment ratio increased. The enrichment ratio increased, while the foamate volume decreased drastically as the temperature was elevated above $20^{\circ}C$, resulting in the decrease in recovery rate. As the gas flow rate increased, the enrichment ratio decreased and the foamate volume increased. When $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was added, the enrichment ratio decreased, but the maximum foamate was obtained at ionic strength 7. The concentration to form the surface excess of ovlbumin, which has lower surface hydrophobicity than BSA, was 200 times higher than that of BSA. This fact indicates the possibility of selective foam separation by hydrophobicity difference of proteins.
