  • In this study, the measurement of physical properties of 3 different ethylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of the zwitterionic surfactants were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of the synthesized zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that all three surfactants used during this study provide better softening effect at a pH of neutral condition than at an acidic or an alkaline condition. This result indicates that the synthesized surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.

  • Soil washing techniques coupled with high pressure air jet were applied for diesel-contaminated soils sampled by an underground oil reservoir of which the initial total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) ($2,828{\pm}206\;mg/kg$) exceeded 5 times of current standard level (500 mg/kg) regulated by the Soil-Environment Conservation Law. Through several tests, we found that the position of impeller has a critical impact for washing efficiencies. The highest washing efficiency was obtained at an oblique angle (30 degree) for the impeller and optimized mixing speed (300 rpm) that could have high shearing forces. Considered economical and feasible aspects, the optimum mixing time was 10 min. Rate constants of TPH removal derived from the first-order equation were not linearly increased as mixing speed increased, indicating that mechanical mixing has some limits to enhance the washing efficiencies. Application of high-pressure air jet in washing process increased the washing efficiency. This increase might be caused by the fact that the surface of micro-air bubbles strongly attached hydrophobic matters of soil particles. As the pressure of air jet increased, the separation efficiencies of TPH-contaminated soil particles increased. In the combined process of high-pressure air jet and mixing by impeller, the optimum mixing speed and air flow-rate were determined to be 60 rpm and $2\;kg/cm^2$, respectively. Consequently, the washing technique coupled with high-pressure air jet could be considered as a feasible application for remediating petroleum-contaminated soils.

  • In order to study the effects of enzyme modification on the physico-chemical and functional properties of myofibrillar protein prepared from the frozen sardine, Sardinops melanostica, the protein was hydrolyzed with pepsin under the enzyme-substrate ratio 1:100 at $37^{\circ}C$ and pH 1.65 for 1, 4, 8, 12, and 24 hr, respectively. The properties of pepsin-modified sardine myofibriliar protein were determined. The extents of proteolysis with pepsin as a fuction of time was showed a typical enzyme hydorlysis curve with an initial region of 4 hour period followed by plateau region. The SDS-acrylamide slab gel electrophoresis patterns of pepsin-modified proteins showed mainly disappearances of minor protein bands, but no changes of main protein bands. The gel filtration patterns through Sephadex G-75 of sardine myofibrillar protein showed two big peaks and three small peaks. All the small peaks were disappearanced by proteolysis with pepsin in one hour. and during the period of proteolysis the fast big peak became gradually smaller and the late big peak eluted more slowly. By proteolysis, the emulsifying activity and emulsifying capacity of sardine myofibrillar protein were all decreased. The effects of pepsin-modification on emulsifying capacity were greater than those on emulsifying activity of protein. The aeration capacity of the protein was increased about 1.9 folds and the foam stability decreased to 0.6 folds of control by pepsin-modification. The pepsin-modified sardine myofibrillar proteins showed about 0.6 folds of heat coagulation and 1.4 folds of viscosity of control. The pH dependence of solubilities of sardine myofibrillar protein showed two isoelectric areas of pH 5 and 9. The pepsin-modified protein showed more clear pH dependences at the early stage but not at the late stage of proteolysis.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the removal effects of the color, nutritive salts and other pollutants on piggery slurry by advanced oxidation process (AOP) system. The experimental AOP system was designed to treat 300 L of piggery slurry per hour. To enhance oxidizing power of the experimental APO system, a ultraviolet irradiation system and the ultrasonic system were attached to the AOP system. With 5 min ultrasonic treatment, COD, SS and T-N concentrations were changed from 210, 820, and 309 to 200, 760, and 262 mg/L, respectively. With 10 min ultrasonic treatment, SS and T-N concentrations tended to decrease but T-P concentration was not changed. With the treatment of both ozone and ultrasonic waves for 30 min, COD, SS, T-N and T-P decreased from 238, 900, 400, and 5 to 165, 540, 263, and 4 mg/L, respectively. With the treatment of both ozone and ultraviolet irradiation for 30 min, COD, SS, T-N and T-P decreased from 321, 340, 204, and 15 to 151, 140, 111, and 7 mg/L, respectively, and color was changed from 4,344 to 624.

  • Void-free impression taking is important for the fabrication of accurate dental restorations. One of the essential properties of an impression material used for indirect fabrication of precision castings is the reproduction of the fine detail. The objective in this study was to determine the influence of mixing methods on the number of voids and surface detail reproduction. The number of voids and surface detail reproduction were evaluated with the steteomicroscope $SZ-PT^{(R)}$ and photographed. The results were as follows ; 1. In comparison of the void formation according to mixing methods of all impression materials, mechanical mixing was better than hand mixing and there was significant difference(p<0.05) 2. In comparison of the void formation according to hand mixing of alginate impression materials($TOKUSO\;A-1{\alpha}^{(R)},\;CAVEX\;IMPRESSIONAL^{(R)},\;AROMA \;FINE\;DF\;III^{(R)}$), there was no significant difference among alginate groups. But the number of void was increased in the order of $Panasil^{(R)}\;contact,\;TOKUSO\;A-1{\alpha}^{(R)},\;Permlastic^{(R)}$ light bodied and there was significant difference (p<0.05). 3. In comparison of the void formation according to mechanical mixing of alginate impression materials($TOKUSO\;A-1{\alpha}^{(R)},\;CAVEX\;IMPRESSIONAL^{(R)},\;AROMA FINE\;DF\;III^{(R)}$), there was no significant different among alginate groups. But the number of void was decreased in order of $TOKUSO\;A-1{\alpha}^{(R)},\;Permlastic^{(R)}light\;bodied,\;Panasil^{(R)}$ contact and there was significant difference (p<0.05). 4. In comparison of the surface detail reproduction according to mixing methods of 3 types of impression materials($TOKUSO\;A-1{\alpha}^{(R)},\;Permlastic^{(R)}\;light\;bodied,\;Panasil^{(R)}\;contact$), there was no significant difference between hand mixing and mechanical mixing method 5. The surface detail reproduction was only influenced by impression materials, and produced better in order of $TOKUSO\;A-1{\alpha}^{(R)},\;Panasil^{(R)}\;contact,\;Permlastic^{(R)}$ light bodied. There was significat difference among 3 type of impression materials(p<0.05). From the above results, void formation is influenced by mixing methods and surface detail reproduction is influenced by impression materials than mixing methods. Therefore, to fabricate accurate restorations, proper impression material and mechanical mixing method are more effective and available clinically.

  • Passive cavitation imaging method is used to observe the ultrasonic waves generated when a group of bubbles collapses. A problem with passive cavitation imaging is a low resolution and large side lobe levels. Since ultrasound signals generated by passive cavitation take the form of a pulse, the amplitude distribution of signals received across the receive channels varies depending on the direction of incidence. Both the centroid and flatness were calculated to determine weights at imaging points in order to discriminate between the main and side lobe signals from the signal amplitude distribution of the received channel data and to reduce the side lobe levels. The centroid quantifies how the channel data are distributed across the receive channel, and the flatness measures the variance of the channel data. We applied the centroid weight and the flatness to the passive cavitation image constructed using the delay-and-sum focusing and minimum variance beamforming methods to improve the image quality. Using computer simulation and experiment, we show that the application of weighting in delay-and-sum and minimum variance beamforming reduces side lobe levels.

  • Root zone cooling, such as soil or nutrient solution cooling, is less expensive than air cooling in the whole greenhouse and is effective in promoting root activity, improving water absorption rate, decreasing plant temperature, and reducing high temperature stress. The heat transfer of a soil cooling system in a plastic greenhouse was analyzed to estimate cooling loads. The thermal conductivity of soil, calculated by measured heat fluxes in the soil, showed the positive correlation with the soil water content. It ranged from 0.83 to 0.96 W.m$^{[-10]}$ .$^{\circ}C$$^{[-10]}$ at 19 to 36% of soil water contents. As the indoor solar radiation increased, the temperature difference between soil surface and indoor air linearly increased. At 300 to 800 W.m$^{-2}$ of indoor solar radiations, the soil surface temperature rose from 3.5 to 7.$0^{\circ}C$ in bare ground and 1.0 to 2.5$^{\circ}C$ under the canopy. Cooling loads in the root zone soil were estimated with solar radiation, soil water content, and temperature difference between air and soil. At 300 to 600 W.m$^{-2}$ of indoor solar radiations and 20 to 40% of soil water contents,46 to 59 W.m$^{-2}$ of soil cooling loads are required to maintain the temperature difference of 1$0^{\circ}C$ between indoor air and root zone soil.
