The Effect of Community-Based Cognitive Stimulation Program on Cognitive Fincion and Subject Memory in the Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairment (지역사회기반 인지자극 프로그램이 경도인지장애 노인의 인지기능과 주관적 기억에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a community-based cognitive stimulation program on cognitive function and subjective memory in the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. This study was applied by selecting 15 users who understood the purpose of this study and agreed to participate in the shelter program for more than 3 months from April 2019 to August 2019 at the D Dementia Center in G located, Gyeonggi-do. The program consisted of a total of 36 cognitive stimulation programs 3 times a week a total of 3 months. Cognitive stimulation program stimulates cognitive function through various activities such as orientation reinforcement, cognitive training, recall, music, art, and physical play, and is used for the purpose of improving social function. It consists of folk songs, percussion instruments, national gymnastics, dance, games, and traditional games. As a result of the cognitive stimulation program, the average cognitive function increased by 2.13 points from 26.33 points before implementation to 28.46 points after implementation, and a statistically significant result was obtained (p=0.000). Subjective memory decreased by 3.53 points from the average of 7.13 points before the cognitive stimulation program was implemented to 3.60 points after the implementation, and a statistically significant result was obtained (p=0.000). It can be confirmed that this works. Dementia is leading to a cost burden, and congnitive function decreases the aqulity of life. It brings various burdens. It is necessary to study cognitive stimulation programs applied to various environments in the future.

Understanding of Visual storytelling in Information design (정보디자인에서 비주얼 스토리텔링의 이해)

  • Human beings in their perception of the objects perceive the overall characteristics first rather than any parts of the object. In the process of 'information structuralization' and 'information visualization', therefore, it is needed the methods of narrative information representation based on a relationship of cause and effect in order to express effectively the whole messages which designers want to deliver. In this study, according to the concept of narrative information representation, we reviewed the meanings of the visual storytelling. As a result, we found that the visual storytelling has the three key roles which are 'narrative', 'visual communication catalyst', 'interacting'. First, the narrative describes the information logistics flow and it has a role to provide a specific story into information in the process of users' information understanding. Second, in the information design, the visual story telling not only expresses the information structure(story) but also uses the visual expressions to deliver the specific message, which is called visual communication catalyst. Third, the information design goes through the information structuralization and the information visualization stages through the visual storytelling to provide the experience factors to the information users, which is called the interactivity. The research implication is to provide the basis developing an approach method which is able to convey information messages effectively by improving information users' visual cognition and raising information users' memory.

Enhancing effect of Multiherb extracts HT008-1 on Memory and Cognitive Function (한약복합물 HT008-1의 인지기능 및 기억력 향상효과)

  • Objectives : Investigation of the memory and cognitive enhancing effect of HT008-1 in scopolamine induced amnesia mice. Methods : At 60 min before acquisition trials, HT008-1 (30, 100, 300 mg/kg p.o.) was administered, and 30 min later, mice were injected with scopolamin (1.0 mg/kg, i.p.). In the passive avoidance test, acquisition trials were carried out 30 min after a single scopolamine treatment. Retention trials were carried out 24h after acquisition trials. Y-maze test was carried out 30 min after a single scopolamine treatment. Spontaneous alternation behavior during an 8-min session was recorded. Inhibitory effects of HT008-1 (0.01, 0.1, 1.0 mg/ml) on AChE activity was measured. Result : HT008-1 ameliorated scopolamine-induced learning impairments and spatial cognitive function in passive avoidance and Y-maze test, respectively. Moreover HT008-1 showed a significant inhibitory effect on AChE activity. Discussion: This study presented that eMultiherb mixture HT008-1 enhanced learning memory and spatial cognitive function in scopolamine-induced amnesia mice. These results suggest that the effect of HT008-1 may be dependent on the inhibition of AChE activity.

The Verify of Memory Improvement by Gastrodia Elata Blume Depends on the Amount (천마의 용량에 따른 기억력 향상 효과에 대한 연구)

  • Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the dose-dependent effects of Gastrodia elata Blume for memory improvement. Methods: This study was a 12-weeks, double blind, and comparative clinical study. Those who were eligible worked with a group of healthy seniors, all 60 years of age or older. 22 subjects were randomized either to Gastrodia elata Blume powder form that was steeped in hot water or placebo. We measured the faculty of memory by using MMSE-K, Digit Span, Letter Fluency Test, Word List Memory Test, and Trail Making Test, and again after 12 weeks. Results: 1) Neither Gastrodia elata Blume groups nor control have a difference in MMSE-K, Digit Span, Letter Fluency Test, and Trail Making Test. 2) Gastrodia elata Blume group showed significant advances in immediate recall 1 and 2 of Word List Memory Test, and 3 g group show better results than the 4 g group. 3) 4 g Gastrodia elata Blume group showed significant advances in the recognition of Word List Memory Test. Conclusions: The results suggest that positive effects on memory improvement due to Gastrodia elata Blume depend on the amount.

Effect of Memory-enhancing Herbal Extract (YMT_02) on Modulating Pentraxin, PEP-19 and Transthyretin gene Expression in Rat Hippocampus (육미지황탕가미방에 의한 흰쥐 기억력 향상과 관련된 Hippocampus 부위의 특이 유전자 발현에 대한 연구)

  • The herbal extract(YMT_02) is a modified extracts from Yukmijihwang-tang(YMJ) to promote memory-enhancing. The YMJ extracts has been widely used as replenishing yin and tonifying the kidneys herbal medicine for hundred years ia Asian countries. The purpose of this study is to: 1) quantitatively evaluate the memory-enhancing effect of YMT_02 by passive avoidance test, 2) statistical evaluation of candidate gene expression (pentraxin. PEP-19, transthyretin) in rat hippocampus. The hippocampi of YMT_02 and control group were dissected and mRNA was further purified. After synthesizing cDNA using oligo-dT primer, the cDNA were applied to Real Time PCR. The results were as follows : 1) passive avoidance test showed enhancing memory retentin by YMT_02 treatment, 2) expression of pentraxin, that accelerate degenerating of neuronal cell, was significantly decreased, 3) the mRNA of genes that has been known to be associated with protecting neuronal cell degeneration, such as PEP-19 and transthyretin, were significantly increased upon YMT_02 treatment. From above results, the administration of YMT_02 which tonify the function of Kidneys could enhance the ability of memory and learning. In addition, the administration of YMT_02 enhance memory retention through modulating particular gene (pentraxin, PEP-19, transthyretin) expressions in hippocampu.

User-oriented Adaptive English Typing Program Implementation using Python (파이썬을 이용한 사용자 중심의 적응적 영문 타이핑 프로그램 구현)

  • In this paper, we implemented a user - oriented adaptive English typing program using class and function structure provided by Python to get English learning effect while effectively typing English on PC. The user of the implemented English typing program creates a text file of required English example sentences and links them to use it for direct English typing exercise. In addition, based on the English sentence used in the English typing exercise, it is possible to obtain the English learning effect by providing the ability to perform the memorization test. The interface of the program is structured in the form of a game so that it can be accessed interestingly, and the ranking among the users is disclosed to provide a positive function. We expect that the implemented program will improve the user's English typing speed and improve the English learning effect.

Choline Contents Survey in Commercial Milks (시판 우유 중 콜린 함량조사)

  • Choline is important an organic compound for normal membrane function, acetylcholine synthesis, lipid transport, and methyl metabolism. In biological tissues and foods, there are multiple choline compounds that contribute to choline content. Many researches suggest that memory and intelligence are improved by the supplement of choline. Recently, according to the effects of choline for memory, choline has been added to milk. In this study, the content of choline was analyzed the commercial whole milks and flavored milks by enzymatic method. The standard curve was linear with 0.00316 slope and 0.994 correlation coefficient. Recoveries varied between 89.8 and 97.6%. Contents of choline in whole milks and flavored milks were 14.56-15.19 and 4.11-11.50 mg/100g, respectively. The results of this study may be usable for the establishment of choline adequate intake for Korean.

Evidence of Memory Improvement by Phosphatidylcholine Supplement at Fetus and Neonate -Studies of Basal Forebrain Cholinerge Neuronal Activities- (태생기 및 신생기의 Phosphatidylcholine 보충기 기억력 향상에 미치는 영향 -전뇌기저부의 Choline성 신경세포 활성에 관한 연구-)

  • To investigate the effect of dietary phosphatidylcholine(PPC) supplement on memory improvement, biochemical study on the brain, and morphometric studies on the cholinergic neurons in the rat basal forebrain were undertaken. The pregnancy rats were divided into the normal control, the choline deficient and the PPC supplemental groups according to quantity of the PPC in diet. According to choline deficiency and PPC supplement after birth, the neonate rate of the normal control group were subdivided into the control diet(N-N) and the PPC supplied (N-S) groups, the choline deficient group were subdivided into the continually deficient (D-D), the control diet(D-N) and the PPC supplied groups(D-S), and the PPC supplemental group were subdivided into the control diet (S-N)and the continually supplied (S-S)group. The PPC supplemented diet was added 2% egg PPC in AIN 76 formula diet. PPC concentrations and cholinesterase(CE) activities were measured in the serum, the liver and the brain, respectively. Immunohistochemical stains for choline acetyltransferase(ChAT) was employed for the morphological and morphometric studies. The maze test was undertaken to evaluate memory improvement. PPC concentration and CE activities in the serum, liver and the brain were high in the PPC supplemental groups and low in the choline deficient groups. ChAT immunoreactivity neurons at the medial septal diagonal bond complex and the basal forebrain nucleus of Meynert were reduced in the choline deficient groups. Average failure rate for the maze test was the lowest in the S-S group and the highest in the D-D group. Insufficient choline suppley during the neuronal development would result in cholinergic neuronal damage, which could be prevented by adequate PPC supplement. It is consequently suggested that PPC supplement may be effective on memory improvement by maintaining the cholinergic neuronal activity in the basal forebrain of the rats.

Effects of a Cognitive Enhancement Program combined Silbot on Cognitive Function, Depression, and Dementia Prevention Behavior in Elderly:A Pilot Study (실봇(Silbot)을 병용한 인지강화 프로그램이 노인의 인지기능, 우울 및 치매예방행위에 미치는 효과: 예비연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a cognitive enhancement program combined Silbot on cognitive function, depression, and dementia prevention behavior in the elderly complaining of subjective memory decline. The subjects were 170 elderly people living in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, and the study was performed at a welfare center. A total of 20 sessions program using Silbot and physical activity was developed and applied, and were evaluated using the Korean version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment (K-MoCA), Geriatric depression Scale(GDS) , and Dementia Prevention Behavior before and after intervention. As a result of the study, the cognitive enhancement program combined Silbot showed statistically significant changes in cognitive function (t=-4.49, p<.001) and depression (t=2.58, p=.023) in the elderly. Therefore, it is expected that the cognitive enhancement program using Silbot will be a useful program that can enhance the cognitive function of the elderly and reduce depression.

A Review on Cognitive Assessment and Rehabilitation for the Elderly Using Gamification Elements in Digital Applications: Focusing on Studies from 2015 to 2024 (디지털 애플리케이션과 게이미피케이션 요소를 활용한 고령자 인지 평가와 인지재활에 관한 문헌 고찰: 2015년부터 2024년의 연구를 중심으로)

  • This study reviews the literature on the utilization of gamification elements in digital applications for cognitive assessment and rehabilitation of the elderly, focusing on both domestic and international research from 2015 to 2024. Following the PRISMA methodology, inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to align with the research objectives. Out of 1,718 initial studies, 18 were ultimately analyzed after a screening and filtering process. The results of this literature review indicate a growing interest in cognitive training and other interventions aimed at mitigating cognitive decline among the elderly. Additionally, it was found that the gamification elements of digital applications are effective in engaging elderly users and improving cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and executive function. The findings of this study suggest that integrating gamification elements can enhance user engagement and provide practical solutions for cognitive health management. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and broader applicability of these digital interventions.
