Influence of the Increase of Dissolved $CO_2$ Concentration on the Marine Organisms and Ecosystems (해수중 용존 $CO_2$ 농도 증가가 해양생물 및 해양생태계에 미치는 영향: 국내외 사례 연구)

  • Influence of the increasing carbon dioxide concentration in seawater on various marine organisms is assessed in this article with regard to the impacts of anthropogenic $CO_2$ introduced into surface or deep oceans. Recent proposals to sequester $CO_2$ in deep oceans arouse the concerns of adverse effects of increased $CO_2$ concentration on deep-sea organisms. Atmospheric introduction of $CO_2$ into the ocean can also acidify the surface water, thereby the population of some sensitive organisms including coral reefs, cocolithophorids and sea urchins will be reduced considerably in near future (e.g. in 2100 unless the increasing trend of $CO_2$ emission is actively regulated). We exposed bioluminescent bacteria and benthic amphipods to varying concentrations of $CO_2$ and also pH for a short period. The ${\sim}l.5$ unit decrease of pH adversely affected test organisms. However, amphipods were not influenced by decreasing pH when HCl was used for the seawater acidification. In this article, we reviewed the biological adverse effects of $CO_2$ on various marine organisms studied so for. Theses results will be useful to predict the potential risks of the increase of $CO_2$ concentrations in seawater due to the increase of atmospheric $CO_2$ emission and/or sequestration of $CO_2$ in deep oceans.

Studies on the Utilization of Korean Native Goat for Meat Production (육자원(肉資源) 개발(開發)을 위한 한국재래산양(韓國在來山羊)의 이용(利用)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • Korean native goats were used for meat production test, and summarized resalts are as follows. 1. The amounts of feed consumed for Korean Native Goat were significantly higher at day than at night. 2. The feed intake was decreased and live weight gain was lower for the summer period. 3. The concentrate consumption was increased when poor quality of pasture and native grass. 4. Compared between single bran feeding group$(T_2)$ and mixed grain feeding group$(T_3)$, the roughage consumption were similar in both groups. 5. By the use of feeding standard for feeding of Korean Native Goat, the feed convertion of T.D.N, D.C.P, and M. E were decreased. 6. It is necessary to periodically protect from contamination parasitic such like stomach worm, liver flack, nodula worm disease and coccidiosis. 7. The carcass rates of goat at 11-12 months age were higher in $T_3$ feeding group as 44.56% compared with $T_2$ feeding group as 42.17% and tethering group as 35.1% and also the dressed carcass percentage were 33.89%, 30.25% and 29.92% respectively. 8. By increasing the amouat concentrate feeds, fat content in muscle was increased but moisture and ash contents were decreased. 9. The fat caused unacceptable flavour was about 4 percent of total dressed goat meat. 10. Among the spices, clove and pepper were better to improved meat flavour for sausage and can meat processing 11. It was known that the quality of goat meat was suitable for meat processing.

The Influence of Adjuvants on Herbicide Activity of Streptomyces scopuliridis KR-001 (토양 방선균 Streptomyces scopuliridis KR-001 균주 배양액의 살초활성을 증가시키는 Adjuvant 탐색)

  • This study was conducted to investigate efficient adjuvants to increase herbicidal efficacy of metabolites from Streptpmyces scopuliridis KR-001. Commonly used 21 adjuvants mixed with the metabolites were applied to eight weed species (six grass weeds and two broadleaved weeds). Based on the visual evaluation, two adjuvants, LE7 (Polyoxyethylene lauryl ether) and EP4C (Sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate), were selected as most efficient adjuvants to elevate herbicidal efficacy of the metabolites. Higher efficacy in the LE7 and EP4C was obtained when overall spray volume was $2,000L\;ha^{-1}(65{\mu}g\;a.i.\;ml^{-1})$ than $1,000L\;ha^{-1}(130{\mu}g\;a.i.\;ml^{-1})$. Field study demonstrated that $1,300{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ of metabolites from KR-001 applied with EP4C at concentration of $2{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ provided a highly effective post-emergence weed control which was almost equivalent to the glufosinate-ammonium at $540g\;a.i.\;ha^{-1}$. On the basis of these results, combination and multiple application methods could be developed to enhance herbicidal efficacy of metabolites from KR-001.

Use of Microwave Range and Oven, and Change on Dietary Type (전자렌지, 오븐의 이용과 식생활의 변화)

  • The possession of microwave range, oven and oven-microwave range has been greatly increased with 88 Seoul Olympic Game as a momentum, and the possession rate was by 68%. The respondent answered the function of microwave range to be more necessary than that of oven, and the two household commodities have been mostly used to reheat and heat simply prepared frozen foods. The 35% among total respondent wished to cook the prepared frozen foods like pizza, but the 87% prefered to cook bakery. The frequencies of the use of oven were 35%, 35% for cooking premix and raw materials, and 20%, 20% for cooking half-prepared and prepared foods, respectively. The respondent of 39% was interested in premix foods as a future preference for food forms, and the respondent with interest in half-prepared food was 30%, but the preference for raw materials and prepared foods showed a trend to be decreased. The respondent of 60ft had eaten out six times week, and 50% had eaten instant and fast foods 1~3 times week. As the results of this survey, most of consumers prefer to more convenient foods. Therefore, it is expected that the function of oven and microwave range would be widely useful if various foods are improved with regards to convenience for use and preference.

Effect of High Temperature and High Pressure on Physicochemical Properties and Antioxidant Activity of Korean Red Ginseng (고온고압 처리가 홍삼의 이화학적 특성 및 항산화 효과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted in order to investigate the physiochemical properties and antioxidative activity of red ginseng manufactured using the high temperature high pressure (HTHP) process, which is faster and simpler than the conventional process. According to increasing the steaming temperature, pressure and time, the content of minor non-polar ginsenosides, such as Rg3, Rk3, Rh4, Rk1 and Rg5 gradually increased. Also, the contents of acidic polysaccharide, total phenolic compounds and maltol gradually increased. Based on the results of the physiochemical properties and appearance quality, the optimum conditions of HTHP process were estimated as $140^{\circ}C$, $3kg/cm^2$ in 20 min. The total phenolic compounds and maltol contents of the HTHP process red ginseng (1.0% and 2.49 mg%, respectively) were higher than those of conventional red ginseng (0.23% and 0.60 mg%, respectively). In addition, the antioxidative activity was investigated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-aziono-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) radical scavenging activity. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of HTHP process red ginseng increased by 3.4 and 3.6 folds, respectively, compared with conventional red ginseng. In addition, total phenolic compounds and maltol contents, as well as the antioxidant activity of the HTHP process red ginseng were similar to black ginseng. The present results suggest that the HTHP process is available for the development of value-added red ginseng products.

질화물계 발광다이오드에서 InGaN/GaN 자우물구조 내 GaN 보호층에 대한 연구

  • IIIN계 물질 기반의 광 반도체는 직접 천이형 넓은 밴드갭 구조를 갖고 있기 때문에 적외선부터 가시광선 및 자외선까지를 포함한 폭 넓은 발광파장 조절이 가능하여 조명 및 디스플레이 관련 차세대 광원으로 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 일반적인 청색 및 녹색 발광영역의 활성층으로는 InGaN/GaN 다중양자우물구조를 사용하고 있으나, 장파장의 녹색 발광을 얻기 위해서는 인듐의 함유량이 증가하여야 한다. 하지만, 인듐의 함유량이 증가함에 따라서 InGaN/GaN 다중양자우물 구조내에서 인듐의 편석현상의 발생이 용이하게 되어 계면 특성을 저하할 뿐 아니라, 비발광 센터를 증가하여 발광 효율을 급격히 감소시키는 원인이 되고 있다. 또한, InGaN과 GaN의 큰 성장온도의 차이에 따라 800도 부근의 저온 영역에서 성장된 InGaN층이 1,000도 이상의 고온 영역에서 GaN층이 성장시 InGaN층의 열화 현상이 급격히 발생되고 있다. 이를 억제하기 위해서 금속유기화학증착법의 성장 변수 최적화, 응력제어, 도핑 등의 편석 억제기술 및 보호층이 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 인듐함유량이 증가된 녹색 InGaN/GaN 다중양자우물구조에서 InGaN 우물층 상하부에 도입된 GaN 보호층에 따라 발생되는 양자우물구조의 광학 및 결정학적 특성 분석을 통해 GaN 보호층의 역할을 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 금속유기화학증착장치를 이용하여 사파이어 기판위에 GaN 템플릿을 성장하고, n-형 GaN, InGaN/GaN 다중양자우물구조 및 p-형 층을 성장하였다. 앞선 언급하였듯이, InGaN/GaN 다중양자우물구조내에 GaN 보호층의 역할을 규명하기 위하여 샘플 A의 경우는 보호층이 전혀 없는 구조이고, 샘플 B의 경우는 InGaN 우물층의 상단부에만, 샘플 C의 경우에는 우물층 상부 및 하단부 모두에 약 2.0 nm 두께의 GaN 보호층을 형성하였다. 이 보호층의 유무에 따른 다중양자우물구조의 계면 특성을 확인하기 위한 X-선 회절을 이용하였고, 광학적 특성을 확인하고 상온 포토루미네선스법을 이용하여 녹색 발광 파장의 변화 및 발광세기를 관찰하였다. 우선적으로, 상온 포토루미네선스법을 이용하여 각 샘플의 발광특성을 확인한 바 상하부 모두에 GaN 보호층이 존재하는 샘플 C의 경우 약 510 nm 부근에서 발광이 관찰되었지만, 상단부에 GaN 보호층이 존재하는 샘플 B는 약 495 nm영역에 발광이 확인되었다. 특히, 전혀 보호층이 존재하지 않는 샘플 A의 경우 약 440 nm에서 발광하는 현상을 관찰하였다. 이는 우물층 상단부 및 하단부에 존재하는 GaN 보호층이 In의 확산을 억제하는 것으로 판단된다. 또한, 발광파장 및 세기를 확인한 바, 보호층의 존재하지 않을수록 단파장화가 발생함에도 불구하고 발광세기는 급격히 약해지는 것으로 보아 계면특성이 저하되어 비발광센터가 증가되는 것으로 판단된다. 이를 구조적으로 확인하기 위하여 X-선 회절법을 통한 ${\omega}$/$2{\Theta}$ 스캔의 결과는 In의 0차 피크가 GaN 보호층이 없을 경우 GaN의 피크 방향으로 이동하는 것으로 보아 GaN 보호층은 우물층 성장 후 GaN 장벽층을 성장하기 위해 온도를 증가시키는 과정에서 In의 확산되는 것으로 판단된다. 또한, 하부 GaN 보호층의 경우 GaN 장벽층 성장 후 온도를 감소시키는 과정에서 성장되므로, 우물층으로부터 In의 탈착현상이 아닌 장벽층과의 상호 확산으로 판단된다. 또한, 계면특성을 확인하기 위해 InGaN의 X-선 위성 피크를 확인한 바 샘플 A의 경우 매우 넓고 약한 피크가 관찰된 반면, 보호층이 존재하는 샘플 B와 C의 경우 강하고 얇은 피크가 확인되었다. 이는 GaN 보호층의 도입으로 인해 계면특성이 향상되는 것으로 판단된다. 따라서, 우리는 InGaN/GaN 다중양자우물구조에서 GaN 보호층은 상부의 열화 억제 뿐아니라, 하부의 장벽층 및 우물층 사이의 상호확산을 억제하는 GaN 보호층의 도입을 통하여 우수한 계면 특성 및 비발광센터의 억제를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 생각되며, 이는 향후 GaN계 발광다이오드의 전계 발광특성을 증가하여 우수한 발광소자를 개발할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Cultural and chemical approaches for controlling postharvest diseases of garlics (마늘 저장병 방제를 위한 경종적, 화학적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate damages of garlics occurred under cold storage and farmhouse storage condition, influence of cultural and environmental factors on storage spoilage of garlics, and to establish control strategies to reduce damages occurred under storage of garlics. Decays of garlics were highly related with cultural condition (paddy field or upland soil), ventilation, storage temperature and relative humidity, continuous cropping years, and harvesting stage. Early-harvested garlics were more decayed than late-harvested garlics. Garlics cultivated on paddy field were less decayed than ones cultivated on upland soil under farmhouse storage condition. The densities of Penicillium spp. and Fusarium spp. were higher on plot with long term continuous cropping cultivation history than on plot with short term continuous cropping cultivation history. However there is no relation between continuous cropping years and percent of decay of garlics. As a result of investigating influence of environmental factors on decay of garlics, P. hirsutum caused severe spoilage under high relative humidity condition, while F. oxysporum and Stemphyllium botryosum were not related with relative humidity. The three postharvest pathogens grew well above woe. In addition when P. hirsutum and S. botryosum were cultured for two months, they grew even at $-1^{\circ}C$. Except for environmental factors, wounds occurred through farming works. had an effect on storage spoilage of garlics. Garlics only hurt with a toothpick without inoculation of pathogens were decayed more severe than those inoculated with pathogens without wounds. Seven agro-chemicals showed highly suppressive effect were selected by measuring mycelial growth of three major pathogens of garlics on potato dextrose agar amended with 0.1% (v/v) of each fungicide. When they were foliar-sprayed on garlics 30 days before harvesting, it was confirmed that they suppressed storage spoilage of garlics. Also when garlics were sprayed with and drenched into the suspension of Benoram WP very after harvesting garlics, garlic damages by postharvest pathogens were reduced remarkably.

Analysis and Prediction of Sewage Components of Urban Wastewater Treatment Plant Using Neural Network (대도시 하수종말처리장 유입 하수의 성상 평가와 인공신경망을 이용한 구성성분 농도 예측)

  • Since sewage characteristics are the most important factors that can affect the biological reactions in wastewater treatment plants, a detailed understanding on the characteristics and on-line measurement techniques of the influent sewage would play an important role in determining the appropriate control strategies. In this study, samples were taken at two hour intervals during 51 days from $1^{st}$ October to $21^{st}$ November 2005 from the influent gate of sewage treatment plant. Then the characteristics of sewage were investigated. It was found that the daily values of flow rate and concentrations of sewage components showed a defined profile. The highest and lowest peak values were observed during $11:00{\sim}13:00$ hours and $05:00{\sim}07:00$ hours, respectively. Also, it was shown that the concentrations of sewage components were strongly correlated with the absorbance measured at 300 nm of UV. Therefore, the objective of the paper is to develop on-line estimation technique of the concentration of each component in the sewage using accumulated profiles of sewage, absorbance, and flow rate which can be measured in real time. As a first step, regression analysis was performed using the absorbance and component concentration data. Then a neural network trained with the input of influent flow rate, absorbance, and inflow duration was used. Both methods showed remarkable accuracy in predicting the resulting concentrations of the individual components of the sewage. In case of using the neural network, the predicted value md of the measurement were 19.3 and 14.4 for TSS, 26.7 and 25.1 for TCOD, 5.4 and 4.1 for TN, and for TP, 0.45 to 0.39, respectively.

Supplementary Effects of Lentinus edodes with Different Harvest Period and Part on Neurotransmitters and Lipid Peroxide Levels in the Brain of Diabetic Mice (채취 시기 및 부위가 다른 표고버섯의 급여가 당뇨 마우스 뇌조직의 신경전달물질 및 지질과산화물 수준에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to investigate the supplementary effects of Lentinus edodes which were harvested at different time period and part on acetylcholine content and its related enzyme activities in the brain of diabetic mouse model (KK mouse). We fed mice with standard diet (Control diet; CON) or 4 different kinds of experimental diets (DGC: on time harvested, cap of Dong Go; DGS: on time harvested, stipe of Dong Go; HSC: late harvested, cap of Hyang Sin: HSS: late harvested, stipe of Hyang Sin) to KK mouse for 8 weeks. Neurotransmitter such as acetylcholine contents, acetylcholinesterase activities, monoamine oxidase-B ac-tivities and lipid peroxide contents in the brain were measured. The results showed that acetylcholine content was significantly higher in DGC and HSC groups than CON group. The activities of acetylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase-B enzyme were significantly inhibited in the brain of DGC and HSC groups compared with CON group. Lipid peroxide content was lower in DGC group than CON group. These results suggested that the cap of Lentinus edodes which were harvested on time and late time contain increased acetylcholine content and decreased acetylcholinesterase activities, monoamine oxidase-B activities and lipid peroxide contents. Thus the cap of Lentinus edodes which were harvested at different time periods may play an effective role in enhancing cognitive function.

Preparation and Characteristics of Bread by Medicinal Herb Composites with Immunostimulating Activity (면역활성을 가진 생약복합물을 이용한 빵의 제조 및 특성)

  • In this study, the breads with medicinal herbs (MH) composites showing immunostimulating activity were prepared and their characteristics were examined. Fourteen kinds of medicinal herbs were extracted with hot water and divided into 3 groups (MH-1, MH-2, MH-3) based on their contents. All groups showed immunostimulating activity in terms of macrophage phagocytosis, nitrite production, cytostatic activity and cytokine production. In the preparation of breads containing MH extracts of various contents (0, 30, 50, 70, and 100%), there was no significant difference among dough pHs of all groups after first fermentation, but loaf volume was significantly (p<0.05) increased in 70% added group while decreased in 30%, 50%, and 100% added groups compared to the control. The "a" and "b" values of bread crumb increased with the content of MH extracts while "L" value decreased, but these values of bread crust were similar to the control group. Most improvements in hardness, adhesiveness, gumminess and chewiness of bread were noticed by the addition of 70% MH extracts, but those of springiness, cohesiveness and resilience were mostly by the 50% addition ones. Through the sensory evaluation, it was revealed that mouth feeling, taste and overall preference decreased at breads containing 70% and 100% extracts, although appearance and crumb texture were not significantly (p<0.05) different among all groups.
