In this study, we investigated the effects of wind speed and direction on building fires using GIS and a CFD model. We conducted numerical simulations for a fire event that occurred at an apartment in Ulsan on October 8, 2020. For realistic simulations, we used the profiles of wind speeds and directions and temperatures predicted by the local data assimilation and prediction system (LDAPS). First, using the realistic boundary conditions, we conducted two numerical simulations (a control run, CNTL, considered the building fire and the other assumed the same conditions as CNTL except for the building fire). Then, we conducted the additional four simulations with the same conditions as CNTL except for the inflow wind speeds and direction. When the ignition point was located on the windward of the building, strong updraft induced by the fire had a wide impact on the building roof and downwind region. The evacuation floor (15th floor) played a role to spread fire to the downwind wall of the building. The weaker the wind speed, the narrower fire spread around the ignition point, but the higher the flame above the building reaches. When the ignition point was located on the downwind wall of the building, the flame didn't spread to the upwind wall of the building. The results showed that wind speed and direction were important for the flow and temperature (or flame) distribution around a firing building.
Despite the decreasing trend of anthropogenic emissions in East Asia in recent years, haze days still frequently occur in spring. Atmospheric blocking, which occurs frequently in the northeastern Pacific, leads to persistent changes in large-scale circulation and blocks westerly flow in the East Asian region. During March 2019, frequent warm and stagnant synoptic meteorological conditions over East Asia were accompanied 6-7 days later by the Alaskan atmospheric blocking. The Alaskan atmospheric blocking over the period of March 18-24, 2019 led to high particulate matter (PM10) severe haze days exceeding a daily average of 50 ㎍ m-3 over the period of March 25-28, 2019 in South Korea. Although the high-PM10 severe haze days were caused by warm and stagnant meteorological conditions, the regional contribution of anthropogenic emissions in eastern China was calculated to be 30-40% using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem). The major regional contributions of PM10 aerosols in the period of high-PM10 severe haze days were as follows: nitrates, 20-25%; sulphates, 10-15%; ammonium, 5-10%; and other inorganics, 15-20%. Ammonium nitrate generated via gas-to-aerosol conversion in a warm and stagnant atmosphere largely contributed to the regional transport of PM10 aerosols in the high-PM10 severe haze days in South Korea.

Ice and water droplets rise and fall above the freezing altitude under the effects of strong updrafts and downdrafts, grow into hail, and then fall to the ground in the form of balls or irregular lumps of ice. Although such hail, which occurs in a local area within a short period of time, causes great damage to the agricultural and forestry sector, there is a paucity of domestic research toward predicting hail. The objective of this study was to introduce Land-Atmosphere Modeling Package (LAMP) hail prediction and measure its performance for 50 hail events that occurred from January 2020 to July 2021. In the study period, the frequency of occurrence was high during the spring and during afternoon hours. The average duration of hail was 15 min, and the average diameter of the hail was 1 cm. The results showed that LAMP predicted hail events with a detection rate of 70%. The hail prediction performance of LAMP deteriorated as the hail prediction time increased. The radar reflectivity of actual cases of hail indicated that the average maximum reflectivity was greater than 40 dBZ regardless of altitude. Approximately 50% of the hail events occurred when the reflectivity ranged from 30~50 dBZ. These results can be used to improve the hail prediction performance of LAMP in the future. Improved hail prediction performance through LAMP should lead to reduced economic losses caused by hail in the agricultural and forestry sector through preemptive measures such as net coverings.

In Korea, hail damage occurs every year, and in the case of agriculture, it causes severe field crop and cultivation facility losses. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a hail information service system customized for Korea's primary production and crop-growing areas to minimize hail damage. However, the observation of hail is relatively more difficult than that of other meteorological variables, and the available data are also spatially and temporally variable. A hail information service system was developed to understand the temporal and spatial distribution of hail occurrence. As part of this, a hail observation database was established that integrated the observation data from Korea Meteorological Administration with the information from newspaper reports. Furthermore, a hail risk map was produced based on this database. The risk map presented the nationwide distribution and characteristics of hail showers from 1970 to 2018, and the northeastern region of South Korea was found to be relatively dangerous. Overall, hail occurred nationwide, especially in the northeast and some inland areas (Gangwon, Gyeongbuk, and Chungbuk province) and in winter, mainly on the north coast and some inland areas as graupel (small and soft hail). Analyzing the time of day, frequency, and hailstone size of hail shower occurrences by region revealed that the incidence of large hail stones (e.g., 10 cm at Damyang-gun) has increased in recent years and that showers occurred mainly in the afternoon when the updraft was well formed. By integrating multidisciplinary data, the temporal and spatial gap in hail data could be supplemented. The hail risk map produced in this study will be helpful for the selection of suitable crops and growth management strategies under the changing climate conditions.

Aircraft pylon connects the engine or external stores to the main wing, and transfers the load acting on the pylon to the main structure of the aircraft. In particular, it should perform the function of separating the external store mounted on the pylon in case of emergency or mission performance. At this time, if the separation of the external store is not performed properly due to peripheral air flow or functional problems during the separation process of the external store, it may seriously impact the survivability of the aircraft. For this reason, to apply an external attachment to an aircraft, it is necessary to prove the stability of the external attachment in the separation situation in advance. In this paper, we present the result of the ground separation test performed to confirm that the external fuel tank, which is an external attachment, can be safely separated from the pylon. As a result of the test, the separation movement of the external fuel tank was measured with a high-speed camera, and the stability of the separation of the external fuel tank from the pylon were confirmed through the ground separation test. Additionally, the test result provides basic data for the stability evaluation of the separation of external attachments in actual aircraft.

This experiment was conducted to confirm the possibility of manufacturing artificial Italian ryegrass hay using far-infrared rays in Korea. The machine used in this experiment was a far-infrared ray dryer capable of adjusting temperature, airflow, and far-infrared radiation, and was conducted on Italian ryegrass harvested in May. Conditions for drying were performed by selecting a total of nine conditions, and each condition was set to emission rate of 42 to 45%, and the internal temperature was set to 65℃. The speed of the air flow in the machine was 40-60 m/s, and the overall drying time was 30 minutes for 42% radiation, 25 minutes for 43% radiation, and 20 minutes for 45% radiation. The final dry matter content according to each drying condition was 88.5% on average, and the dry matter content suitable for hay was shown in the all treatment. Looking at the power consumption according to the drying conditions, the lowest was found in the treatment that dried for 20 minutes at 45% radiation. In the drying rate, there was no difference in drying conditions 1 to 5, but a significantly low tendency was shown in conditions 6 to 7. In terms of feed value, CP and IVDMD were higher than raw materials in most drying conditions, and ADF and NDF contents were low, and tended to be high in drying conditions 4, 7, and 8. Through the above results, it was judged that drying conditions 7 and 8 were the most advantageous when considering drying speed, power consumption, and quality.

In this paper, the smoke behavior in an underground station on operation of the fans in the ventiliation of the station was measured by the experimental method when the fire occurred in the underground station platform where the platfrom screen door was installed. The ventilation characteristics were compared when the ventilation system was operated and when the ventilation system was not operated when a fire occurred at the platform where the clean door was closed. To simulate the fire smoke, the smoke generated from the smoke generator was heated using a hot air fan. The transmittance was measured using a smoke density meter to quantitatively measure fire smoke. If the screen door is closed and the ventilation system of the underground station does not work, it is confirmed that if a fire occurs in the platform, smoke accumulates inside the platform, evacuating passengers is very difficult and can lead to a very dangerous situation. On the other hand, under the condition that the ventilation facility of the subway station is operated, the smoke evacuates to the outside through the ventilation facility of the underground station, and airflow is formed in the direction from the waiting room to the waiting area, so that the passenger located on the platform can safely evacuate toward the concourse. In the following paper, we will discuss the concurrent effect of tunnel ventilation through tunnel vent near the platform.
A simple and rapid high-performance liquid chromatography assay for the determination of residual novobiocin levels in bovine, porcine, chicken, flatfish and japanese eel muscle has been developed and validated. The separation condition for HPLC/UV was optimized with phenyl hexyl ($4.6{\times}150mm$, $5{\mu}m$) column with 10 mM monobasic sodium phosphate buffer (pH 2.5)/acetonitrile (50/50, v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min and detection wavelength was set at 254 nm. Residues were extracted from tissue by blending with methanol and lipid materials were removed with n-hexane. Then, the methanol extract was evaporated to dryness under a nitrogen stream, reconstituted in the mobile phase. Aliquot of the organic extract was decanted and filtered through $0.45{\mu}m$ syringe filter. The $20{\mu}L$ of the resulting solution was injected into the HPLC system. The calibration ranges were $0.5{\sim}5{\mu}g/g$ and calibration curves were linear with coefficients of correlation better than 0.95. The limits of quantification were $0.5{\mu}g/g$ for all muscles. The recoveries of bovine, porcine, chicken, flatfish and japaneseel muscles were 99.8%, 102.4%, 91.0%, 104.0% and 93.0%, respectively. The procedures were validated according to the CODEX guideline, determining specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, quantitation limit and recovery.

The aim of this study is to investigate a correlation between fundamental data on aerodynamic characteristics of bridge girder cross-sections, such as aerodynamic force coefficients and flutter derivatives, and their aerodynamic behaviour. The section model tests were carried out in three stages. In the first stage, seven deck configurations were studied, namely; Six 2-edge girders and one box girder. In this stage, changes in aerodynamic force coefficients due to geometrical shape of girders, incidence angle of flow, wind directions and turbulence intensities were studied by static section model tests. In the second stage, the dynamic section model tests were carried out to investigate the relativity of static coefficients to dynamic responses. And finally, the two-dimensional (lift-torsion) aerodynamic derivatives of three bridge deck configurations were investigated by dynamic section model tests. The aerodynamic derivatives can be best described as a representation of the aerodynamic damping and the aerodynamic stiffness provided by the wind for a given deck geometry. The method employed here to extract these unsteady aerodynamic properties is known as the initial displacement technique. It involves the measurement of the decay in amplitude with time of an initial displacement of the deck in heave and torsion, for various wind speeds, in smooth flow. It is suggested that the proposed aerodynamic force coefficients and flutter derivatives of bridge girder sections will be potentially useful for the aeroelastic analysis and buffeting analysis.

Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive airflow obstruction that is only partly reversible, inflammation in the airways, and systemic effects. This study aimed to investigate the association between low peripheral oxygen saturation levels (SpO2), and composite indices predicting death in male patients with (COPD). Method: A total of 140 participants with post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio less than 0.7 were included. Three composite indices (ADO, DOSE, BODEx) were calculated using six variables such as age (A), airflow obstruction (O), body mass index (B), dyspnea (D), exacerbation history (E or Ex), and smoking status (S). Severity of airflow limitation was classified according to Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines. SpO2 was measured by pulse oximetry, and anemia and iron deficiency were assessed based on blood hemoglobin levels and serum markers such as ferritin, transferrin saturation, or soluble transferrin receptor. Results: Participants with low SpO2 (<95%) showed significantly lower levels of %FEV1 predicted (p=0.020) and %FEV1/FVC ratio (p=0.002) compared to those with normal SpO2 levels. The mMRC dyspnea scale (p<0.001) and GOLD grade (p=0.002) showed a significant increase in the low SpO2 group. Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis revealed higher area under the curve for %FEV1 (p=0.020), %FEV1/FVC(p=0.002), mMRC dyspnea scale (p=0.001), GOLD grade (p=0.010), ADO (p=0.004), DOSE (p=0.002), and BODEx (p=0.011) in the low SpO2 group. Conclusion: These results suggest that low SpO2 levels are related to increased airflow limitation and the composite indices of COPD.
