Toward Developing a Provenance Conceptual Model for Data-driven Electronic Records (데이터형 전자기록을 위한 출처 개념 모델 개발 방향)

  • This study explored the possibilities of a new approach to developing the provenance concept to electronic records in the data-driven digital environments by reviewing and adopting data provenance concepts and models. It then conducted basic literature review to develop a ground for a model representing the provenance of data-driven electronic records. In particular, it proposed to embrace to the concepts of retrospective and prospective provenance, and to develop a different model for representing provenance from records management metadata. If the model can be developed that can represent provenance independently while maintaining a dynamic relationship with records, it can be ensure the fluidity of records and even support to secure the record's attributes and play the roles of provenance. Eventually, it proposed the direction to develop the provenance model which can support the fixity of records, the reproducibility of activities, and the trustworthiness of representations. It is expected to be a fit provenance model in the data-driven digital environment.

  • The study aims at providing an electronic transaction records management system based on the third party repository which do not have any interest in electronic transactions. This study reviews various articles and standards. It also discusses theoretical issues about electronic transactions and electronic transaction records. Complex characteristics of electronic transaction records are explored and management procedures are analyzed and divided into 5 stages by the life cycle and management bodies. Based on these discussions the study affirms that trustworthy third parties' interventions are essential to prevent and control potential conflicts of electronic transactions. It proposes a trustworthy electronic transaction record management system with the third party repository. Futhermore, it discusses evidence and management environment of electronic transaction records and provides cases of TTPR based on contract transaction and exchange transaction.

  • From the perspective of postmodernism, no reality can exceed the discourse included in the representation. Recently, impact of post-modernism of archival science is often observed. Affected by postmodernism in archival science studies, archives are deliberately constructed product, and any kind of archival principle is negatively examined, not only contents but also its planning accordingly to the researches of post-modernism archives. In the eye of postmodernism, archivists are also considered as being exposed to the context of relativity. While this is sometimes seen as negative, there are such positive opinions that postmodernism would bring us closer to the reality of archives. In this paper, the nature of archives, provenance, original order and archival value as the basic concept of the modern archival science, will be discussed from the perspective of postmodernism. Also, effect and prospect of postmodernism will be discussed.

A Study on Selection Criteria and Evaluation System for Preservation Formats of Video-Type Digital Records (비디오 유형 전자기록물의 보존포맷 선정기준 및 평가체계에 관한 연구)

  • With the National Archives of Korea's establishment of the Selection Criteria for Preservation Format of Digital Records (v1.0) in 2022, criteria have been formed to facilitate the selection of appropriate preservation formats for various types of digital records. With the advancement of technology, diverse electronic file types are produced. However, no specific criteria exist for records other than document types, such as PDF/A-1b. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to derive intrinsic criteria for selecting preservation formats for audiovisual records, particularly focusing on video-type digital records, to expand the scope of the preservation format selection criteria. Initially, significant properties of video-type digital records were determined, forming the basis for the intrinsic criteria. According to these properties, the video types were categorized into container type and codec type, and three and six evaluation criteria items were derived, respectively. By structuring evaluation criteria for each attribute, this paper proposes intrinsic criteria for selecting preservation formats for video-type electronic records.

A Study of Metadata Elements for Digital Image Records Management (디지털이미지 기록관리를 위한 메타데이터 요소 연구)

  • As the importance and proportion of electronic records increases in the public sector, the necessity for variable types of records management has strengthened. Elements of records management metadata standards, which were provided in 2007 by the National Archives of Korea, focused mainly on text-centered records management standards. Therefore an extension of elements which can represent diverse types of electronic records is needed. In this study, metadata elements focusing on image records are suggested. For this, the characteristics of image records are investigated and the Australian government recordkeeping metadata standard and the PREMIS data dictionary, which have been recently modified, are analyzed. Through this, four elements, format, significant properties, environment, and coverage are suggested to fortify the current records management standard.

  • In order to design effective electronic records management systems, it is viable to consider both traditional principles of records management, proven to be effective, and the characteristics of digital information. ISO 15489, an international standard for records management, is acknowledged as the most useful guidelines for this goal. The present study extracted basic principles of electronic records management from its provisions of 7 functional steps. It then compared the principles to system requirements of three system design criterion, developed by Department of Defense(U.S.A.) Public Records Office(Britain). and European Union respectively. Common requirements, included in all three criterion. were then searched in the Korean standard of developing automated systems for records centers. Finally, suggestions were made to develop a Korean standard for electronic records management system, elaborating from the core requirements of the system found by the present study.

  • Electronic record types are becoming diverse, and "composite electronic records," which are made up of various types of electronic records associated with functionality or user interaction that does not exist in current electronic document formats, are increasing. To ensure a continuous access to composite electronic records, metadata construction is a prerequisite for electronic records archiving. In this paper, we propose a metadata that can support archiving of composite electronic records associated with interactive functionality. The common elements were derived from an analysis of both domestic and international file format registry projects, and metadata elements related to functional requirements were identified from the analysis of the records on nursing education e-learning contents. We proposed the metadata elements for archiving composite electronic records, which consist of 25 high-level elements and 138 subelements.

A Study on the Criteria for Digitization of Records (기록의 디지털화 기준에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest an improvement of digitization criteria for records that can faithfully reproduce the contents and properties of original records by complementing the problems and deficiencies of "NAK 26:2018(v2.0) Digitization Criteria for records". Thus, this study proposes a technical standard improvement that should be applied to the digitization process for records not produced in the form of digital files by comparing and analyzing the criteria for digitization of records in Korea with overseas digitization criteria, guidelines, recommendations, and so on. In addition, verifying the validity on this study by interviewing experts from the record-related institutions. As a result, suggested a final improvement of criteria for digitization of records such as applying non compression-Lossless codecs, proposing appropriate resolution values for each type of records, audio channels, frame rates, scan methods, and criteria for microform types.

  • In these days, the attributes data recorded in computerization of cadastral maps is just written in its own format, not considered the relation with graphic data. Therefore, digital information linked attribute data to graphic data is necessary to be performed as fundamental data of graphic information and analysis of various spatial information. This study is to present the possibility of GIS application by constructing cadastral information related to graphic and attribute Information based on the cadastral map. Attribute information was constructed as a relational database form using data modeling and entity-relationship diagram. Thus, this study is expected to be used as a fundamental data for various public planning and design including the effective management of cadastral information and building parcel based land information system by presenting various spatial analysis and application methods.

A Study on the Ontology Modeling by Analyzing RiC-CM v0.2 (RiC-CM v0.2 분석을 통한 온톨로지 모델링에 관한 연구)

  • This study is the first paper to introduce in the country the preview of RiC-CM v0.2, the standard for the description of records based on archival principles by the ICA in December 2019, and an early stage of research that considers how to apply it at archive management. This study was conducted as follows. First, this study compared and analyzed entities, attributes, and relations of RiC-CM v0.1 and v0.2, and extracted the characteristics of version 0.2. Second, this study tried to confirm the semantic structure of the archives by constructing the ontology modeling in consideration of the basic principle and the extracted characteristics of version 0.2, and built ontology modeling using Protégé. Finally, this study figured out the differences from version 0.1 through entering individuals into Protégé and examined how the characteristics of version 0.2 was represented by ontology.
