Generally, polymer materials are not air-permeable and hydrophilic. In addition, they do not possess anti-fungal property. Hydrophilicity, air-permeability, and anti-fungal properties of new composites consisting of polymer, ceramic nanoparticles, and silver ion were investigated by contact angle measurements, air permeation time, and cell culture. The hydrophilic, air-permeable, and anti-fungal composites can be used in health care industry.

Electrical characteristics of crystalline polymer composites filled with nano-sized carbon black particle were studied. The developed composite system exhibited a typical positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) characteristic, where the electrical resistance sharply increased at a specific temperature. The PTCR effect was sometimes followed by a negative temperature coefficient resistance (NTCR) feature with temperature, which seemingly caused by the coagulation of nano-sized carbon black particles in the excessive quantity. The PTCR temperature was controlled by the carbon black content and the external voltage. The change of electric conductivity was shown as a function of carbon black content, and the resistance was constant when the carbon black content was over 20 wt%. The room-temperature resistance was maintained by a repeated heating and cooling. The excellent PTCR characteristic was demonstrated by the low resistance in the initial stage and the instantaneous heating capability.

Carbon fiber is a material with excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties, which is widely used as a composite material made of a polymer matrix. However, this composite material has a weak point of interlaminar delamination due to weak interfacial bond with polymer matrix compared with high strength and elasticity of carbon fiber. In order to solve this problem, it is essential to use reinforcements. Due to excellent mechanical properties, graphene have been expected to have large improvement in physical properties as a reinforcing material. However, the aggregation of graphene and the weak interfacial bonding have resulted in failure to properly implement reinforcement effect. In order to solve this problems, dispersibility will be improved. In this study, functionalization of graphene nanoplatelet was proceeded with melamine and mixed with epoxy polymer matrix. The carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites were fabricated using the prepared graphene nanoplatelet/epoxy and flexural properties and interlaminar shear strength were measured. As a result, it was confirmed that the dispersibility of graphene nanoplatelet was improved and the mechanical properties of the composite material were increased.
We have worked a surface modification to release a strong agglomeration of multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) and a incorporation of hydrophilic polymer to improve compatibility between MWCNT and polymers. Carboxylated MWCNT was easily obtained by acid treatment and the carboxylate was converted to acylchloride by thionyl chloride. Then, we tried one more synthesizing routes to achieve covalent bonds with poly(ethylene oxide) having amine end groups of low molecular weight. We measured the polymer content on the surface of MWCNT by TGA and observed increased diameter of MWCNT by SEM and TEM analysis.
We fabricated several composite membranes with selectively permeable performance designed to facilitate water vapor transport and resist DMMP vapor permeation. Materials for selective permeable membrane were based on polyvinyl alcohol and functional polymer containing basic functional group. With these materials, we characterized selectively permeable performance to identify next-generation material with chemical-biological protective capability. Results showed that polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) materials possessed performance with superior water vapor permeation ($2,200{\sim}2,900g/m^2/day$) and protective capability against DMMP vapor ($47g/m^2/day$).
Nanomaterials having large surface area, uniform dimensions or pores can be utilized in various membrane applications Amongst them, many studies have been focused on nanocarbon materials: graphene, graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes, one-dimensional structure, have excellent characteristics in thermal, chemical and mechanical strength properties. However, carbon nanotubes was mainly used to reinforce mechanical properties of polymer materials in previous applications. In contrast to previous studies, we focused on modified carbon nanotubes/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) composite membrane preparation for improvement of permeability and selectivity on gas separation.
