  • The RFI process is an OoA process that fiber mats and resin films are laminated and cured in a vacuum bag. In case that resin film is insufficient to fill empty space in fibers, it makes void defect in composites and this void decrease mechanical properties of the composites. For this reason, non-destructive testing is usually used to evaluate void of manufactured composites. So, in this study, a manufacturing method of standard void specimens, which are able to be used as references in non-destructive testing, was proposed by controlling resin film thickness in the RFI process. Also, a fiber compaction test was proposed as a method to set the resin film thicknesses depending on target voids of manufacturing panels. The target void panels of 0%, 2%, and 4% were made by the proposed methods, and signal attenuation depending on void was measured by non-destructive testing and image analysis. In addition, voids of specimens for tensile, in-plane, short beam and compressive tests were estimated by signal attenuation, and mechanical properties were evaluated depending on the voids.

  • As a shop practice, a strength estimation method for die cast parts is suggested, in which various defects such as pores can be allowed. The equivalent porosity is evaluated by combining the stiffness data from a simple elastic test at the part level during the shop practice and the theoretical stiffness data, which are defect free. A porosity equation is derived from Eshelby's inclusion theory. Then, using the Mori-Tanaka method, the porosity value is used to draw a stress-strain curve for the porous material. In this paper, the Hollomon equation is used to capture the strain hardening effect. This stress-strain curve can be used to estimate the strength of a die cast part with porous defects. An elastoplastic theoretical solution is derived for the three-point bending of a die cast beam by using the plastic hinge method as a reference solution for a part with porous defects.

  • Real slug and bubbly flows were measured using a three-ring impedance meter that can efficiently measure the void fraction of two-phase flows in a tube. First, the fitting curves between the signal from the impedance meters and the void fraction were found. The impedance meter had different fitting curves for slug and bubbly flows that had the same void fraction. An impedance meter should choose one of the two fitting curves according to the flow pattern, and the flow patterns can be recognized using the measured void fraction. The velocities and sizes of the bubbles were calculated using the void fraction curves measured by two impedance meters.

  • In this study, when the carbon fiber composite was manufactured, the correlation between the porosity and mechanical properties according to the number of glass fiber felts laminated together and the stacking sequence was confirmed. The carbon fiber composite was manufactured by stacking glass fiber felts, which are highly permeable materials, and using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Porosity was measured by photographing the cross-section of the specimen with an optical microscope and then using porosity calculation code of MATLAB, and mechanical properties were measured for tensile strength, modulus by tensile test. Furthermore, Pearson correlation coefficient between porosity and mechanical properties was calculated to confirm the correlation between two variables. As a result, the number of glass fiber felt increased and the distance from the center of laminated composites increased, the porosity increasing were confirmed. In addition, tensile strength/modulus showed a weak positive correlation with porosity. Also, in order to confirm the effect of only porosity on tensile strength and modulus, mechanical properties calculated by CLPT (Classical Laminate Plate Theory) and experimental values were compared, and the difference in tensile strength showed a strong positive correlation with porosity and the difference in modulus showed a weak positive correlation with porosity.

  • This study was focused on the improvement of production techniques of small crucibles in relation with the appropriate selection of raw materials, various batch compositions and physical and chemical characteristics of the crucibles. Various tests gave the optimum batch composition for the carbon bond graphite cructble as follows: Pyontaek graphite flake (refractory aggregate) : 40Part Silicon carbide: 15Part Tar pitch (binder) : 11Part Inorganic additives (to improve the oxidation resistance) : 15 Part Cryolite : 3 Part Ferro manganese : 2 Part Ferrosilicon : 25 Part Crucibles pressed with 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 12$0^{\circ}C$. and fired in reducing atmosphere at 120$0^{\circ}C$ brought the most favorable results as follows: Bulk density : 2.31 Apparent density : 2.58 Porosity : 15.2% Oxidation loss at 1, 50$0^{\circ}C$. for 3 hrs : below 3.77% Water absorption : 6.01% Compressive strength : 438kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ Tensile strength : 256kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • We analyzed the unit cell performance against the cathode porosity, which is supposed to be closely related with active sites for the cathode reaction. In order to fabricate the unit cells with different porosity in the cathode layer we changed the mixing ratio of fine and coarse LSCF cathode powders. The final porosity of each cathode layer was 14, 23, 27, $39\%$ respectively. According to the electrochemical analysis of unit cell performance via DC current interruption and AC impedance method, the electrodic polarization resistance was diminished as the cathode porosity increased. The decrease of polarization resistance was attributed due to the increase of active reaction sites and the enhancement of overall unit cell performance could be explained in the same line.

  • In this study a new growing method of silicon nitride whiskers in the inside of large pores made intentionally during the sintering was conducted. Pore size, pore vol%, and nitrogen pressure were used as experimental variables. Silicon nitride whiskers were well grown in the inside of pores with low pore vol% range from 14 to 27 but not grown with high pore vol% such as 39 and 50. On the other hand, pore size and nitrogen pressure did not have any influence on the whisker growth. Therefore the most important factor to grow silicon nitride whisker in the inside of large pores during sintering was to make pores isolated or closed.

  • Two ring-type conductance meters were manufactured to measure void fraction and its propagation speed in slug flow. The signal of conductance meter with two rings depends on liquid temperature. Therefore a conductance meter with separated probe designed by Coney (1973), which is independent of liquid temperature, was used and experimentally proved. The manufactured conductance meters showed a good repeatability and agreement with the analytical solution by Coney (1973). From time lag between two conductance meter, we could calculate the propagation speed of void fraction.

  • Flow-induced voids during resin impregnation and poor fiber wetting give serious effects on the mechanical properties of composites in resin transfer molding process. In order to better understand the characteristics of resin flow and to investigate the mechanism of void formation, flow visualization experiment for the resin impregnation was carried out on plain weaving glass fiber mats using silicon oils with various viscosity values. The permeability and the capillary pressure for the fiber mats of different porosities were obtained by measuring the penetration length of the resin with time and with various injection pressure. At low porosity and low operating pressure, the capillary pressure played a significant role in impregnation process. Video-assisted microscopy was used in taking the magnified photograph of the flow front of the resin to investigate the effect of the capillary pressure on the void formation. The results showed that the voids were formed easily when the capillary pressure was relatively high. No voids were detected above the critical capillary number of 2.75$\times$$10^{-3}, and below the critical number the void content increased exponentially with decrease of the capillary number. The content of void formed was independent of the viscosity of the resin. For a given capillary number, the void content reduced with the lower porosity of the fiber mat.
