  • Alumina slurriers, having various amount of alumina and ratio of organic additives, were prepared for tape casting. The relative viscosities were compared to investigate influence of composition on stability of the slurry and plotted as a function of powder fraction. They raised with increasing powder fraction of slurries, revealing a exponential function curve, which means that stability of slurry was not affected by amount and composition of organic additives. Cast green tapes were tested under tensile condition at room temperature. The increase in alumina ratio and binder ratio was found to decrease strain to failure of green tapes from 363% to 45% and from 68% to 25%, respectively. Tensile strength of green tapes increased abruptly with increasing alumina ratio, which showed its maximum at 1 MPa. On other hand, Tensile strength increased continuously from 0.5 MPa to 4 MPa with increasing binder ratio. Mechanical properties of them were affected seriously and lost their properties by elevating temperature from 20$^{\circ}C$ to 80$^{\circ}C$.

  • Purpose: The purpose of present study is to compare mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of fractured surface for cast, 3-D printing laser sintered and CAD/CAM milled cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy specimens and to investigate whether laser sintered technique is adequate for dental applications. Materials and methods: Thirty six flat disc shape Co-Cr alloy specimens were fabricated for surface hardness test and divided into three groups according to the manufacturing methods; 12 specimens for casting (n=12), 12 specimens for laser sintered technology (n=12) and 12 specimens for milled technology (n=12). Twelve dumbbell shape specimens for each group were also fabricated for a tensile test. Statistical comparisons of the mechanical properties for the alloys were performed by Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney and Bonferroni test. The microstructural characteristics of fractured surfaces were examined using SEM. Results: There were significant differences in the mean Vickers hardness values between all groups and the cast specimen showed the highest (455.88 Hv) while the CAD/CAM milled specimen showed the lowest (243.40 Hv). Significant differences were found among the three groups for ultimate tensile strength, 0.2% yield stress, elongation, and elastic modulus. The highest ultimate tensile strength value (1442.94 MPa) was shown in the milled group and the highest 0.2% yield strength (1136.15 MPa) was shown in the laser sintered group. Conclusion: Different manufacturing methods influence the mechanical properties and microstructure of the fractured surfaces in Co-Cr alloys. The cast Co-Cr alloy specimens showed the highest Vickers hardness, and the CAD/CAM milled specimens revealed the highest tensile strength value. All alloys represent adequate mechanical properties satisfying the ISO standards of dental alloy.

  • In recent years, 3D printing has received increasing attention due to releases of low-cost 3D printers based on open-source platform. 3D printing is expected to reduce the barrier to entry in the traditional manufacturing processes by increasing flexibility and creating an advantage to manufacture customized products at low costs. In this study, a unique eyeglass frame was designed to have a snake shape, which has an asymmetric geometry unlike traditional frames. The eyeglass frame was designed in a customized manner by reflecting dimensional characteristics of a customer's face. Finite element analysis was performed to investigate the structural safety of the 3D printed frames during the assembly process. The analysis also considered the effect of anisotropic material properties as determined by tensile tests. The eyeglass frame was then printed using the customized sizes and the best building process. The eyeglass frame was successfully assembled with lenses and without structural failure during its assembly procedure.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the thermoforming characteristics of an inner case with three refrigerator cavities using three-dimensional(3D) thermoforming analyses. We perform fundamental formability analyses using a 3D model of the mould for the inner case. We carry out tensile tests at the elevated temperature to examine the properties and characteristics of the thermoformed material. Then, we design sub-processes of the thermoforming process for the inner case. In addition, we develop suitable finite-element models for different sub-processes. We investigate the deformed shapes and thickness distributions of the inner case for different sub-processes using the results of the thermoforming analysis. Finally, we discuss the formability and thermoforming characteristics of the inner case with three cavities.

  • Since the organophilic bentonite disperses well in polymer matrix, a composite material of polymer and bentonite was studied for its mechanical properties. To increase the degree of dispersion and the bond in forces to the polymer matrix, bentonite, encapsulated by imidazoline, was used as a filler. Polyethylene powder of particle size of 100 mesh was used, and organophilic bentonite, so-called bentone, whose particle size was 250 mesh was also used in this experiment. V-type mixer was used for mixing and Banbury mixer was used for melt-blending. The sample specimen were made by heating the mixture in the plate press, and the specimen were formed as a sheet, exactly the same as the mold on the plate. Tensile strength, bending strength and compressive strength were studied specially. Tensile strength, elongation rate, bending strength and bending rate at constant pressure were decreased as the filler content increased. Compressive strength was increased as the filler content increased.

  • In this study, three softwood species were treated with water-soluble melamine resin by different concentration and treatment time under vacuum pressure for improving mechanical property, abrasion resistance, and incombustibility. After the treatment, a compreg was manufactured and then evaluated on physical properties. Additionally, incombustibility of compreg was determined by comparing with a wood that was treated by spraying a water-soluble fire retardant on surface. As concentration of resin increased, bending strength and Brinell hardness increased as well as abrasion resistance, but there was no correlation on treatment and mechanical properties by treatment time. The wood impregnated by water-soluble melamine resin under vacuum pressure showed better incombustibility than that of a water-soluble fire retardant sprayed wood. Therefore, this treatment could be used for improving incombustibility of wood.

  • Wood plastic composites (WPCs) are attracting a lot of interest recently. In this study, wood flour/polyethylene (PE) composites panels comprised of a coupling agent and nanoclay were prepared by melt-blending followed by compression molding. Five maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) coupling agents were tested, and the best choice and its optimum content were determined. The mechanical properties of the WPCs were measured by UTM, and the thermal properties were measured by TGA, DMA, DSC, and TMA. Adding just a small amount (1 phr) of organoclay made the tensile and flexural strength and the crystallinity of the WPC somewhat increase and the storage modulus and dimensional stability of the WPC largely increase. SEM images showed that the coupling agent drastically improved wood flour/PE interfacial bonding. Selecting the best coupling agent optimized content and adding a small amount of organoclay resulted in a high performance wood flour/PE composite.

  • The mechanical properties of PTFE 100%, PTFT 90% + carbon black 10%, PTFE 85% + glass fiber 15%, PTFE 80% + glass fiber 15% + molybdenum disulfide ($MoS_2$) 5%, PTFE 75% + glass fiber 25%, and PTFE 75% + carbon black 18% + graphite 7% composites were investigated in this study. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to examine the heat of fusion(${\Delta}H_f$) and thermal stability of the composites. Also, the wear surface and wear volume of PTFE lip seal were examined using the durability test. Wear surface was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the hardness, wear resistance and durability were enhanced by adding glass fiber and molybdenum disulfide into pure PTFE, but tensile strength and elongation were decreased. According to the experimental results, the composite (PTFE + 15% glass fiber + 5% molybdenum disulfide) showed the best properties for applying to oil-seal among six types of PTFE composites.

  • CRUD (chalk river unidentified deposits) is a porous material deposited on the surface of nuclear fuel during nuclear power plant operation. The CRUD is composed of metal oxides, such as iron, nickel, and chromium. It is essential to investigate the effects of the CRUD layer on the wall heat transfer between the nuclear fuel surface and the coolant in the event of a nuclear accident. CRUD only negatively affects the temperature of the nuclear fuel due to heat resistance because the effects of the CRUD layer on two-phase boiling heat transfer are not considered. In this study, the physical property models for the porous CRUD layer were developed and implemented into the SPACE code. The effects of boiling heat transfer models on the peak cladding temperature and quenching were investigated by simulating a reflood experiment. The calculation results showed some positive effects of the CRUD layer.

  • In order to meet increasingly complex and rigorous technical specifications, extensive effort has been devoted to fabricate clad materials with multi-layered metal plates. In this study, novel stainless steel/aluminum/copper (STS/Al/Cu) three-ply clad materials were fabricated by a hot rolling process for cookware applications. The effect of the testing temperature on the mechanical properties of the clad materials and on each component metal was investigated during the tensile tests. The interface properties of the clad materials were also examined by optical microscopy (OM) and an electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA). The best mechanical and interfacial properties for a warm working process were found in a sample annealed at a temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. For the sample annealed at $400^{\circ}C$, the results of the tensile test indicated that interface delamination occurred only in the region of the Al/Cu interfaces. This was due to the formation of the thick and brittle intermetallic compound of $Al_2Cu$ in the Al/Cu interface. In contrast, no interface delamination was observed in the STS/Al interface, most likely due to its strong bond strength.
