In order to improve the efficiency of the water splitting system for hydrogen energy production, the high overvoltage in the electrochemical reaction caused by the catalyst in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) must be reduced. Among them, transition metal-based compounds (hydroxide, sulfide, etc.) are attracting attention as catalyst materials to replace currently used precious metals such as platinum. In this study, Ni foam, an inexpensive metal porous material, was used as a support and β-Ni(OH)2 microcrystals were synthesized through a hydrothermal synthesis process. In addition, changes in the crystal morphology, crystal structure, and water splitting characteristics of β-Ni(OH)2 microcrystals synthesized by doping Fe to improve electrochemical properties were observed, and applicability as a catalyst in a commercial water electrolysis system was examined.

This work investigated the plasma-catalytic decomposition of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and the behavior of the byproduct compounds over monolith-supported metal oxide catalysts. Iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$) or copper oxide (CuO) was loaded on a monolithic porous ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ support, which was placed inside the coaxial electrodes of plasma reactor. The IPA decomposition efficiency itself hardly depended on the presence and type of metal oxides because the rate of plasma-induced decomposition was so fast, but the behavior of byproduct formation was largely affected by them. The concentrations of the unwanted byproducts, including acetone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, methane, carbon monoxide, etc., were in order of $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ < $CuO/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ < ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ from low to high. Under the condition (flow rate: $1L\;min^{-1}$; IPA concentration: 5,000 ppm; $O_2$ content: 10%; discharge power: 47 W), the selectivity towards $CO_2$ was about 40, 80 and 95% for ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, $CuO/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, respectively, indicating that $Fe_2O_3/{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ is the most effective for plasma-catalytic oxidation of IPA. Unlike plasma-alone processes in which tar-like products formed from volatile organic compounds are deposited, the present plasma-catalyst hybrid system did not exhibit such a phenomenon, thus retaining the original catalytic activity.
In the present paper, the thermal deactivation characteristics of plate-type commercial $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ SCR catalyst were investigated. For this purpose, the plate-type catalyst was calcined at different temperatures ranging from $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. Structural and morphological changes were characterized byXRD, specific surface area, porosity, SEM-EDS and also NOx conversion with ammonia according to the calcine temperature. The NOx conversion decreased with increasing calcine temperature, especially when the catalysts were calcined at temperatures above $700^{\circ}C$. This is because the crystal phase of $TiO_2$ changed from anatase to rutile, and the $TiO_2$ grain growth and $CaWO_4$ crystal phase were formed, which reduced the specific surface area and pore volume. In addition, $V_2O_5$, which is a catalytically active material, was sublimated or vaporized over $700^{\circ}C$, and a metal mesh used as a support of the catalyst occurred intergranular corrosion and oxidation due to the formation of Cr carbide.
Hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN)-based liquid propellants are attracting attention as environmentally friendly propellants because they are not carcinogens and the combustion gases have little toxicity. The catalyst used to decompose the HAN-based liquid propellant in a thruster must have both low temperature activity and high heat resistance. The objective of this study is to prepare an Ru/alumina/metal foam catalyst by supporting alumina slurry on the surface of NiCrAl metal foam using a washing coating method and then to support a ruthenium precursor thereon. The decomposition activity of a HAN aqueous solution of the Ru/alumina/metal foam catalyst was evaluated. The effect of the number of repetitive coatings of alumina slurry on the physical properties of the alumina/metal foam was analyzed. As the number of alumina wash coatings increased, mesopores with a diameter of about 7 nm were well-developed, thereby increasing the surface area and pore volume. It was optimal to repeat the wash coating alumina on the metal foam 12 times to maximize the surface area and pore volume of the alumina/metal foam. Mesopores were also well developed on the surface of the Ru/alumina/metal foam catalyst. It was found that the metal form itself without the active metal and alumina can promote the decomposition reaction of the HAN aqueous solution. In the case of the Ru/alumina/metal foam-550 catalyst, the decomposition onset temperature was significantly lowered compared with that of the thermal decomposition reaction, and ${\Delta}P$ could be greatly increased in the decomposition of the HAN aqueous solution. However, when the catalyst was calcined at $1,200^{\circ}C$, the catalytic activity was lowered inevitably because the surface area and pore volume of the catalyst were drastically reduced and Ru was sintered. Further research is needed to improve the heat resistance of Ru/alumina/metal foam catalysts.

To overcome certain disadvantages of past typical control techniques for toxic contaminants emitted from various industrial processes, the current study was conducted to establish a thermal catalytic system using mesh-type transition-metal platinum(Pt)/stainless steel(SS) catalyst and to evaluate catalytic thermal destruction of five chlorinated hydrocarbons[chlorobenzene(CHB), chloroform(CHF), perchloroethylene (PCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane(TCEthane), trichloroethylene(TCE)]. In addition, this study evaluated the catalyst poison effect on the catalytic thermal destruction. Three operating parameters tested for the thermal catalyst system included the inlet concentrations, the incineration temperature, and the residence time in the catalyst system. The thermal decomposition efficiency decreased from the highest value of 100% to the lowest value of almost 0%(CHB) as the input concentration increased, depending upon the type of chlorinated compounds. The destruction efficiencies of the four target compounds, except for TCEthane, increased upto almost 100% as the reaction temperature increased, whereas the destruction efficiency for TCEthane did not significantly vary. For the target compounds except for TCEthane, the catalytic destruction efficiencies increased up to 30% to 97% as the residence time increased from 10 sec to 60 sec, but the increase of destruction efficiency for TCEthane stopped at the residence time of 30 sec, suggesting that long residence times are not always proper for thermal destruction of VOCs, when considering the destruction efficiency and operation costs of thermal catalytic system together. Conclusively, the current findings suggest that when applying the transition-metal catalyst for the better destruction of chlorinated hydrocarbons, VOC type should be considered, along with their inlet concentrations, and reaction temperature and residence time in catalytic system. Meanwhile, the addition of high methyl sulfide(1.8 ppm) caused a drop of 0 to 50% in the removal efficiencies of the target compounds, whereas the addition of low methyl sulfide (0.1 ppm), which is lower than the concentrations of sulfur compounds measured in typical industrial emissions, did not cause.
In this study, the effect of physical properties of $Pt/TiO_2$ on $NH_3$-selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) reaction at $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ was investigated. CO-chemisoption and BET analysis were carried out to verify physical properties of $Pt/TiO_2$. By characterizing physical properties of $Pt/TiO_2$ with respect to the Pt loading, the metal dispersion degree decreased as a function of the Pt loading amount. Also, the catalyst having a higher metal dispersion showed an excellent conversion efficiency of $NH_3$ to $N_2$. Since the specific surface area of the support affects the metal dispersion, $Pt/TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared using $TiO_2$ with different physical properties. As a result, it was confirmed that the catalyst having a wide specific surface area exhibited a excellent conversion of $NH_3$ to $N_2$.

In this study, a computational chemistry methodology called as molecular modeling was been applied to explain several experiment results mechanistically. The reaction chosen for this study was to remove carbon dioxide, known as a primary greenhouse gas, by an epoxide via the carbon dioxide fixation to produce carbonates. This reaction inherently needs the use of catalysts because it has a significantly high activation barrier (55~59 kcal/mol). Among various types of catalysts, we studied in zeolitic imidazolate framework 90 (ZIF-90)/ionic liquid immobilized ZIF-90 (IL-ZIF-90), polystyrene-supported quaternized ammonium salt, KI/KI-glycine, and dimethylethanolamine (DMEA). First, probable reaction pathways were proposed based on calculated energetics by computational chemistry. The energetics was then used for the thermodynamic interpretation on the activity of catalysts. In the case of ZIF-90/IL-ZIF-90 and KI/KI-glycine, IL-ZIF-90 and KI-glycine showed better yields compared to their counterparts. The calculation proposed interesting results that it is not from the lowering of activation energy but from the unstable intermediates of ZIF-90 and KI-glycine. For DMEA, the calculated activation energy was ~42 kcal/mol, much lower than that of the non-catalytic reaction. A possible reaction pathway was located to confirm the interaction between −NH group from ammonium and oxygen from epoxide for polystyrene-supported quaternized ammonium salt.

In this study, an analysis on the reaction characteristics of a catalyst using platinum (Pt) as an active oxidation metal catalyst for controlling SO2 was performed. Pt/TiO2 catalyst was prepared by using Pt as various precursor forms on a titania (TiO2) support, and used for the experiment. There was no difference in performance of SO2 oxidation according to Pt valence states such as Pt2+ or Pt4+ on Pt/TiO2, and Pt chloride species such as PtClx reduces SO2 oxidation performance. In addition, as a result of analyzing the valence state of the catalyst before and after the SO2 oxidation reaction by XPS analysis, a decrease in lattice oxygen and an increase in surface chemisorbed oxygen after the SO2 oxidation reaction were confirmed. Therefore it can be suggested that the oxidation reaction of SO2 when using the Pt/TiO2 catalyst is the major one following the Mar-Van Krevelen mechanism where the reaction of lattice oxygen corresponding to PtOx and the oxidation-reduction reaction by oxygen vacancy occur. Overall, it can be confirmed that the oxygen species of PtOx (Pt2+ or Pt4+) present on the catalyst acts as a major active site.

In this study, the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics within sandwich panels are investigated using computational fluid dynamics. Within the sandwich panels having periodic cellular cores, air can freely move inside the core section so that the structure is able to perform multi-functional roles such as simultaneous load bearing and heat dissipation. Thus, there needs to examine the thermal and flow analysis with respect to design variables and various conditions. In this regard, ANSYS Fluent was utilized to explore the flow and heat transfer within the pyramidal truss sandwich structures by varying the truss angle and inlet velocity. Without the entry effect in the first unitcell, the constant rate of pressure and the constant rate of Nusselt number was observed. As a result, it was demonstrated that Nusselt number increases and friction factor decreases as the inlet velocity increases. Moreover, the rate of Nusselt number and friction factor was appreciable in the range of V=1-5m/s due to the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Regarding the effect of design variable, the variation of truss angle did not significantly influence the characteristics.
