• The major import minerals of South Korea are copper ore, lead-zinc ore, iron ore, manganese ore and molybdenum ore. Oversea resources development of South Korea have 92 projects in 14 nations of Asia, 29 projects in 10 nations of America and Europe, and 14 projects in 9 nations of Middle Asia and Africa. But, most projects of them are found in Australia, China, Mongolia and Indonesia. The most projects of the Australia, China and Indonesia are interested in coal and a little projects of them have manganese, iron, lead-zinc, nickel, copper, gold, molybdenum, rare earth elements and uranium. The most projects of the Mongolia are interested in gold and rare earth elements. Representative ore deposits models of metal resources are Orogenic lode deposits, Volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, Porphyry deposits, Sedimentary exhalative deposits, Mississippi valley type deposits, Iron oxide copper-gold deposits and Magmatic nickel-copper-platinum group element deposits based on global distribution, reverses and grades of their deposits models. If oversea mineral resources will be examined the mineral reserves, mineral mine production and ore deposits models of nations and then survey and investigate of mineral resources, we may be maintained ore body of high grade at survey area and decrease the investment risk.

  • In this study, the resource efficiency and future metal resource requirement in photovoltaic (PV) production system were evaluated by using material balance data and life cycle assesment (LCA) method. As a result, in the resource efficiency of ferrous and non-ferrous metal, lead and tin had higher resource efficiency than other materials in all PV systems (SC-Si, MC-Si, CI(G)S, CdTe). In the resource efficiency of rare metals, gallium and rhenium in silicon system and rhenium and rhodium in thin-film system ranked as the first and second high resource efficiency. In case of rare earth metal, gadolinium and samarium took higher resource efficiency. The results of the future metal resource requirement in PV systems showed that 2,545,670 ton of aluminium, 92,069 ton of zinc, 22,044 ton of copper, 1,695 ton of tin and 31 ton of nickel will be needed by 2030 in South Korea, except resource recycling supplement.

  • Marine mineral resources are classified into submarine and seawater mineral resources. In seawater, huge amounts of useful minerals, such as uranium, lithium, magnesium, aluminum, zinc, iron, silver, copper, vanadium, nickel, titanium and cobalt are present. If the rare metals recovery technology from seawater is developed, the commercialization of the precess will be possible. For the 21st century, countries rich in resoures tend to weaponize the resources, according to the depletion of reserves and quality degradation of metal resources in the land. Therefore, Korea that relies on imports for most of the metal resources, should focus on the research and development of the rare metals recovery technology from seawater by using the geographical characteristics of the country that is on three sea-sides.

  • It is very necessary for the metal recycling industries and the researchers to understand the current status of demand and supply of non-ferrous metals and their scraps. Domestic demand and supply of non-ferrous metals and their scraps have been surveyed and reported on the journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling since ten years before. However, it was confined to six major non-ferrous metals such as copper, aluminum, zinc, lead, nickel and magnesium because there are so many kind of non-ferrous metals. In this article also, demand and supply of these non-ferrous metals in addition tin during recent five years (2014 ~ 2018) in Korean markets were reviewed, and their recycling ratio of scraps were briefly estimated. The statistical data were mainly cited from the data issued by Korea Customs Service (KCS) and Korea Non-Ferrous Metal Association, and some fragmental published review articles from magazines and other technical reports.

  • Countries which have a lot of metal resources are weaponizing metal resources such as supply limitation, high price sale. It's necessary for us to establish the countermeasure for recycling of used metal resources on a government basis. Ministry of Environment has established and announced the project for finding and reuse the hidden metal resources as pan-government department pass the Cabinet meeting at September 22, 2009. This countermeasure, 10 years project, is classified into 2 steps. Aim of this project is advance of the recycling technology and industry, achievement of recycling rate, 75%, improvement in adverse balance of trade, 1.25 billion US$.
