Structure and mechanical properties of nitrogenated diamond-like carbon films deposited by RF-PACVD (RF 플라즈마 CVD에 의해 합성된 질소 함유 다이아몬드성 카본필름의 구조 및 기계적 특성)

  • Nitrogen incorporated diamond-like carbon films were deposited by r.f. glow discharge of mixtures of benzene and ammonia gases. Mechanical properties, composition and atomic bond structure were investigated when the fraction of ammonia increases from 0 to 0.79 and the negative self bias voltage of cathode from 100 to 900 V. Both the residual compressive stress and the hardness decrease from 1.7 to 1.0 GPa and from 2750Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ to 1700Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$, respectively. In addition to hydrogen, triply bonded nitrogens also play a role of teminal sites of the three dimensional atomic bond network. By considering the hydrogen concentration and the nitrogen bond characteristics, it can be shown that the mechanical properties of the films are determined by the content of three dimensional inter-links of $sp^2$ clusters. Although the mechanical properties are affected by the nitrogen addition, its depedence on the negative bias voltage is qualitatively identical to that of pure diamond-like carbon films.

Observation of Light-Propagation along the Tube of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (냉음극 형광램프의 광 전파)

  • The light propagation along a long positive column has been observed in a cold cathode fluorescent lamp. The optical signals are observed with the DC and AC voltage power during lamp operation. The light propagating is observed in the operation with the DC-rippled voltage as well as the AC-voltage. The optical signals propagate from the high voltage side to the ground. These signals show two kinds of features according to the before and after Townsend breakdown. At the dark current before Townsend breakdown, the optical intensity is damped and the propagation velocity is $10^4{\sim}10^5m/s$. At the high current of normal glow after Townsend breakdown, the propagation velocity is 1$10^5{\sim}10^6m/s$ without damping.

  • The inner-diameter 5 cm cold hollow cathode ion source was designed for the high current density and the homogeneous beam profile of ion beam. The ion source consisted of a cylindrical cathode, a generation part of magnetic field, a plasma chamber, convex type ion optic system with two grid electrode, and DC power supply system. The cold hollow cathode ion sources were classified into standard type (I), electron output electrode modified type (II). The operation of the ion source was done with discharge current, ion beam potential and argon gas flow rate. The modification of electron output electrode resulted in uniform plasma generation and uniform area of ion beam was extended from 5 cm to 20 cm. Improved ion source was evaluated with beam uniformity, ion current, team extraction efficiency, and ionization efficiency.
