  • The efficacy of petroleum spray oil (PSO; D-C Tron $Plus^{(R)}$) against spirea aphid (Aphis citricola) and two scales (lcerya purchasi and Planococcus cryptus) on citrus was tested in Jeju, Korea. The control value of 0.33% PSO against spirea aphid was over 90% at 3 and 6 days after treatment (DAT), and then decreased to about 80% at 9 and 14 DAT. Spraying of PSO (0.33, 0.66, 1%) against cottony-cushion scale showed a much lower control value (less than 50%) during the investigation period compared to that of the conventional pesticide (Methion). When used against tile scale, Planococcus cryptus, the control value of 1% PSO was 95%, but that of 0.33% and 0.66% PSO only ranged from 50 to 80%, lower than the conventional pesticide. The results of this study, as with a previous study, suggest that spraying of 0.33% and 0.5% PSO not only controls the spirea aphid, but also reduces the density of two scales (lcerya purchasi and Planococcus cryptus) on citrus tree in Jeju, without phytotoxic damage.

  • Many of the chlorophenol derivatives are widely used as insecticides, herbicides and plant growth regulators. The function and use of these chemicals would be different according to the number of chlorine and their chemical structures. It was reported in this article that 1) Bis(trichlorophenoxy) ethane was synthesized with 2 mol-trichlorophenol and 1 moi-dibromoethane in 2 moi-Sodium hydroxide alcohol solution, and 3) the insecticidal activity of Bis(trichlorophenoxy) ethane was compared with Phenkapton, Tedion V-18, BHC, and DDT, on Citrus red mite, Bombix mori (Silk worm), and Daikon leaf beetle(Phaedon brassicae) 3) The toxicity of Bis(2, 4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) ethane and Bis(2, 4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) ethane was studied on mice. The following results were obtained. 1) Yield of Bis(2, 4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) ethane, $50.06\%$, m.p. $157-159^{\circ}C$, and yield of Bis(2,4, 6-trichlorophenoxy) ethane, $32.60\%$, m.p. $162-163^{\circ}C$. 2) Insecticidal activity of Bis(2, 4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) ethane to Citrus red mite is stronger than that of Tedion V-18, and weaker than that of Phenkapton. 3) Insecticidal activity of Bis(2, 4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) ethane to Bombix mori is weaker than those of BHC and DDT. 4) Insecticidal activity of Bis(2. 4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) ethane to Daikon leaf beetle proved to be ineffective. 5) Five rams of Bis(2, 4, 5-trichlorophenoxy) ethane and Bis(2, 4, 6-trichlorophenoxy) ethane pet kg of body weight respectively were given to mice orally, and none of the mouse was killed by it after a period of 72 hours. Therefore it seems that there is almost no toxicity.

  • In order to investigate the impact of recycling agricultural wastes as feed for mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), we evaluated the replacing effect by the different level of tangerine shell, Chinese cabbage, king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) and Enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrates on wheat bran feed. Larval survival rate, larval weight, developmental period of larva, pupation rate and pupal weight were evaluated. In tangerine shell and Chinese cabbage replacement group, no replacing effects found. In all groups replacing by spent King oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) substrate, survival rate of larva was similar to that of control group but larvae weighed less than control group significantly. Developmental period of larva increases in the group of King oyster mushroom substrate replacement. Larval and pupal weight in Enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrate by the level of 40 and 50%, replacement effect showed best results in successive breeding considering pupation rate. It is concluded that replacing 40 and 50% of Enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrate is appropriate to substituted diet of Tenebrio molitor larvae.

  • A rapid and very sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography/atmospheric-pressure chemical-ionization mass spectrometry method to detect ethylenethiourea (ETU) fungicide residues in fruits was developed. Methylene chloride was used as the surface extraction solvent for the target component. Recovery rates improved when cysteine hydrochloride and sodium carbonate were added to product prior to fortification. The limits of detection and quantification were approximately 0.006 and 0.02 mg/kg, respectively, from mandarin oranges. Recoveries from mandarin oranges, oranges, bananas, and pears, spiked in the range of 0.05-0.5 mg/kg, averaged 80-100%. The proposed method was used to monitor the presence of ETU in commercial fruits purchased from different markets in Seoul, Korea. ETU was found in four orange peels and in three mandarin orange peel samples. The highest ETU residue levels were $73.6{\mu}g/kg$ and $29.8{\mu}g/kg$.

  • Pipe design normally requires pump power, discharge rate or pipe diameter for each condition given. Due to several investigators the pipe friction factor can now be estimated by explicit way when the flow condition is provided. In various problems of pipe design, however, the flow condition cannot be pre-determined even for the uniformly rough pipe. In these cases a lot of iterations are often required to have an accurate solution with ordinary approach. This paper presents the explicit way of estimating the discharge rate and pipe diameter without any iteration process being related to non-dimensional physical numbers, power-diameter number, power-discharge number, and discharge-slope number, which enable to develop explicit forms of equations.

  • The investigation was aimed to reduce the period of bed log through the protection of harmful fungi and to know the effects of physiological activating substances on the yield increase of Lentinus edodes. Mycelial growth was evaluated both the bed logs and physiological activating substances, respectively. I percent extract of Allium cepa and malt as a physiological activating substance was highly effective in mycelial growth of Lentinus edodes. Better effects among the bed logs by the application fo physiological activating substances observed in both Quercus serrata and Carpinus laxiflora. This results suggested that supplement of physiological activating substances to the bed log would be beneficial for the production of Lentinus edodes.

  • The finite element method is usually formulated by utilizing the variation principle. In this paper, we introduce the approximate equation of finite element from Helmholtz eqation by means of the Galerkin method, which provides the best approximation of those methods known as the method of weighted residuals, and a numerical simulation based of the finite element method is applied to analysing the acoustic modes and the pattern of sound radiation in two and three dimensional sound fields. Beside the numerical calculations, the acoustic modes and the sound pressure level are mesured by scale model experiments. The finite element analysis of the model shows very good agreement with the mesured results.
