  • In fatigue life prediction, it is important that fatigue life is affected by crack closure phenomenon in thin sheet Al alloy. In this research, we attempt to (1)analyze the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation in constant loading condition for thin sheet Al 2024-T3 alloy which is generally used in transportation structures, (2)identify the crack closure phenomenon in thin sheet comparing experimental results of thin and thick sheet specimen under same fatigue loading condition. In using the fatigue related material constants from these fatigue crack propagation analysis, we attempt to (3)operate the fatigue life estimating process with considering crack closure phenomenon and (4)analyze the experimental and prediction results of fatigue life in thin sheet Al alloy.

  • This experimental research evaluated the length of crack extension with the measured compliances as the mutual comparison factors instead of the method proposed in ASTM E561-80. And this research measured the R-curves with the application to the concept of the strain energy release rate that was formulated from the inelastic energy absorbed during the crack growth. With the interpretation of R-curves, this research obtained the starting point of the unstable crack growth, and compared the values of critical fracture toughness with each other, and then examined the effects of variations of the maximum size of coarse aggregate and the thickness of specimen on the values of the critical fracture toughness.

  • Ship structures and aircraft structures are consisted of thin sheet alloy, so it is very important to understand the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation of that material and to establish the data base. The data for fatigue crack propagation behavior scatter very much even under identical experimental conditions with constant loading. The behavior of fatigue crack propagation under regular and irregular cyclic loadings is known to be highly affected by complicated factors such as plastic zone developed at the vicinity of crack tip and reduction of cross sectional area. In this paper, the controlled stress amplitude and overload fatigue crack propagation tests have been conducted to investigate the effect of varying factors such as plastic zone size near the crack tip and area reduction factor (AF) on the fatigue crack propagation behavior A better simulation of fatigue crack propagation behavior is found to be obtainable by using Wheeler and Willenborg models with AF effect.

  • The effective resolution of the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method for crack length determination is strongly affected by a number of factors including wire locations and calibration method. In the present study, the effects of wire locations, thermal EMF and reference probe locations on the accuracy of calibration methods, including Hicks-Pickard equation and Johnson's equation, were examined with the CT specimens which were nine times larger than the standard specimen. In light of experimental results, it was found that Hicks-Pickard equation can accurately represent the a/W-V/Vo relationship when current input wire is located at the load line. It was also found that the accuracy of DCPD method can be greatly improved with the thermal EMF calibration and the use of Vo value at a/W = 0.241. The use of reference potential was found to be impractical when current input wire is located at the load line.

  • In this study, electro-deposition method was applied to heal cracks in various blended concrete. The performance of the method was indirectly monitored by measuring impressed voltage, electrolyte, galvanic current monitoring, linear polarization resistance, and directly by image analysis of the cracks. The indirect and direct monitoring values are compared to develop guidelines for relating the indirect measures to actual crack healing. As a result, It was found that impressed voltage was convergence to 2.9V after 20000 minutes. From the galvanic current test results of artificial crack healing, the corrosion resistance showed that the order of 0.4 $>$ 0.6 $>$ 0.5 water to cement ratio. Furthermore, in view of binder, the corrosion resistance order was calculated OPC $>$ 60%GGBS $>$ 10%SF $>$ 30%PFA. Finally, It was found that 76.47% of healed crack surface calculated from the artificial crack healing technique using electrochemical deposition method.

  • Fracture process of continuous fiber reinforced composites is very complex because various fracture mechanisms such as matrix cracking, debonding, delamination and fiber breaking occur simultaneously during crack growth. If fibers cause crack bridging during crack growth, the stable crack growth and unstable crack growth appear repeatedly. Therefore, it is very difficult to exactly determine tile starting point of crack growth and the fracture toughness at the critical crack length in composites. In this research, fracture toughness test for CFRP was accomplished by using acoustic emission(AE) and recording of tile fracture process in real time by video-microscope. The starting point of crack growth, pop-in point and the point of unstable crack growth can be exactly determined. Each fracture mechanism can be classified by analyzing the fracture process through AE and video-microscope. The more reliable method ior the fracture toughness measurement of composite materials was proposed by using the combination of R-curve method, AE and video microscope.

  • This study presents a case study of condition evaluation of various asphalt pavement sections to estimate performance lives. The pavement surface conditions including cracking and rutting are first evaluated using a automatic pavement analyzer, ARAN. HPCI(Highway Pavement Condition Index) values are estimated using the pavement surface distress data. It is observed from the pavement distress survey that the major distress type of the sections is top-down cracking. The modulus value of each pavement layer is back-calculated from the defection data obtained from a FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer) and compared with the laboratory measured dynamic modulus values. Remaining lives of the various pavement sections are estimated based on a mechanistic-empirical approach and AAHTO 1993 design guide. The structural capacities of the all pavement sections based on the two approaches are strong enough to maintain the pavement sections for the rest of design life. Since the major distress type is top-down cracking, the remaining lives of the pavement sections are estimated based on HPCI and existing performance database of highway pavements. To evaluate the causes of premature pavement distress, various material properties, such as air void, asphalt binder content, aggregate gradation, dynamic modulus and fatigue resistance, are measured from the field cores. It is impossible to accurately estimate the binder contents of field samples using the ignition method. It is concluded from the laboratory tests that the premature top down cracking is mainly due to insufficient compaction and inadequate aggregate gradation.

  • To detect the damage in composite structure, nondestructive evaluation techniques are widely used. Tapping test is perhaps the most common technique used for the detection of damage in composite laminates. The method is accomplished by tapping the inspection area with light hammer-like device. The tapping test has the ability that indicates damages in a structure due to a localized change of stiffness. The change in vibration signature may be detected by measurement of the dynamic contact force during impact. In this study, it has been shown that the characteristics of impact force histories from a structure during tapping are changed by the presence of damage such as surface crack and delamination. And impact response analysis has been performed on composite rotor blade with crack to investigate the effect of damage.

  • Applicability of crack arrest load measured from the Charpy V-notch impact test has been investigated to predict the fracture toughness of nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels (ASME SA508 Cl.3). The temperature dependence of the crack arrest load was well described by the type of exponential function characterized by an index temperature at which the crack arrest load is 2kN. The specific index temperature, which also well correlated with $T_{NDT}\;and\;T_{41J}$ is expected to be representative index temperature characterizing the crack arrest fracture toughness of RPV steels. Also, the crack arrest load correlated well with the stable crack length measured from the fracture surface. From the measurements of the crack arrest load and the stable crack length, the lower bound fracture toughness, $K_{Ia}$ of RPV steels could be predicted with sufficient accuracy.
