Observation of Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior in 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V Steel Using Image Processing Technology (영상처리기법을 이용한 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V 강의 피로균열 성장거동 관찰)

  • The development of a new experimental method is required to easily observe the growth behavior of fatigue cracks. To satisfy the requirement, an image processing technique was introduced to fatigue testing. The length of surface fatigue crack could be successfully measured by the image processing system. At first, the image data of cracks were stored into the computer while the cyclic loading was interrupted. After testing, crack length was determined using an image processing software which was developed by authors. Various image processing techniques like a block matching method was applied tc the detection of surface fatigue cracks. By comparing the data measured by the image processing system with those by the manual measurement with a microscope, the effectiveness of the image processing system was established. If the proposed method is used to monitor and observe the crack growth behavior automatically, the time and efforts for fatigue test could be dramatically reduced.

  • Ships and ocean structures are generally under random loading. Various type of variable-amplitude loading affects fatigue crack growth and fatigue life. However interaction effects due to irregularity of loading including random loading have not explained exactly and it is difficult to examined fatigue crack growth behaviour and fatigue life for this reason. Therefore in this paper crack growth tests with constant-amplitude loading including a single overload were conducted to measure plastic zone size near crack tip of DENT specimen. And the observed plastic zone sized were discussed in terms of crack growth rate. As a result of this the effect the plastic rue size due to the overload is examined on the effect on crack growth rate and, consequently, fatigue life.

Detection of a Crack on a Plate by IDT Type Lamb Wave Sensors (IDT형 Lamb 파 센서에 의한 판상의 균열 검출)

  • In this paper, an Inter-Digital Transducer (IDT) type Lamb wave sensor is proposed to estimate the geometry and number of cracks on a plate structure, and its validity is checked through experiments. This IDT type sensor is more readily controllable than conventional patch type piezoelectric sensors to modify its operation frequency and directionality by altering its finger patterns. In this work, omni-directional annular IDT and highly directional rectangular IDT sensors are designed and fabricated. The IDT sensors are used to diagnose the length, number and orientation of cracks on an aluminum plate by measuring the amplitude and time of flight of Lamb waves. The results are analyzed to discuss the efficacy of the IDT sensors.

Tension Lap Splice Length in High-Strength Concrete Flexural Members (고강도 콘크리트 휨부재의 인장 겹침이음길이에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the test results of total 24 beam-end specimens to investigate the effect of high-strength concrete and cover thickness on the development resistance capacity in tensile lap splice length regions. Based on bond characteristics that an increase in concrete strength results in higher bond stress and shortening of the transfer length, cracking behavior that thin cover thickness induced a splitting crack easily and brittle crack propagation, current design code that development length provisions as uniform bond stress assumption was investigated apply as it. The results showed that as higher strength concrete was employed, not only development resistance capacity was influenced by cover thickness, but also more sufficient safety factor reserved shorter than the lap splice length provision in current design code. From experimental research results, high-strength concrete development length was not inverse ratio of $\sqrt{f_{ck}}$ but directly inverse of $f_{ck}$, and it is also said that there is a certain limit length of the embedded steel over which the assumption of uniform bond stress distribution is valid specially for high-strength concrete not having a same embed length such as normal-strength concrete in current design criteria hypothesis.

  • 액체금속로는 고온 하중 효과(피로, 크립, 크립-피로)를 고려한 내열응력설계가 중요하다. 최근에는 액금로 후보재료로서 종래의 스테인레스강에 질소를 첨가하여 고온강도를 계량한 316LN 스테인레스강이 개발되었다. 본 연구에서는 액체금속로 재료의 가장 지배적인 손상 기구로 인식되고 있는 피로-크립 파손에 대한 설계자료를 확보하기 위해 DCPD(Direct Current Potential Drop)법에 의한 고온피로균열 측정 시스템을 개발하고 316L 및 스테인레스강인 316LN 스테인레스강에 대한 고온 피로균열진전시험을 수행하였다. 본 연구에 의해 개발된 피로균열진전속도 측정 시스템에 의하면 25$\mu\textrm{m}$ 이하의 분해능으로 균열길이를 측정할 수 있다. 한편 316L 스테인레스강에 질소를 적당량 첨가하면 상온에서 $600^{\circ}C$사이의 온도에서 피로균열진전에 대한저항성이 증가하는 것을 확인하였다.

Influence of Microcracks in Geochang Granite on Brazilian Tensile Strength (거창화강암의 미세균열이 압열인장강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The characteristics of the microcrack lengths(①), microcrack spacings(②) and Brazilian tensile strengths(③) related to the six directions of rock cleavages(H2~R1) in Geochang granite were analyzed. First, the 18 cumulative graphs for the above three major factors representing unique characteristics of the rock cleavages were made. Through the general chart for these graphs classified into three planes and three rock cleavages, the 28 parameters on the length, spacing and Brazilian tensile strength have been determined. The results of correlation analysis among these parameters are summarized as follows. Second, the above parameters were classified into six groups(I~VI) according to the sorting order on the magnitude of parameter values among three rock cleavages and three planes. The values of parameters belonging to group I and II are in order of R(rift) < G(grain) < H(hardway) and H < G < R. The values of the 8 parameters on the length of line(os2, 𝚫s, 𝚫L and oSmean), the exponent(λLmean and λSmean), the slope(amean) and the anisotropy coefficient (Anmean) are in order of R < G < H and H'(hardway plane) < G'(grain plane) < R'(rift plane). Third, the noticeable differences in distribution patterns among the six types of charts for three planes and three rock cleavages are as follows. From the chart for three planes, the values of 𝚫L, 𝚫s and 𝚫σt, corresponding to the distance between two points where the two fitting lines meet on the X-axis, increase in the order of R' < H' < G'. In particular, the two graphs of R2 and G2 related to the length and Brazilian tensile strength are almost parallel to each other and show the distribution characteristics of hardway plane. Among the graphs related to the Brazilian tensile strength, the overall shape for hardway plane is similar to that for grain. From the chart for three rock cleavages, the slopes of the graphs related to the length increase in the order of R < G < H, while those of the graphs related to the spacing and Brazilian tensile strength decrease in the order of R < G < H. Lastly, the characteristics of variation among the six rock cleavages, the three planes and the three rock cleavages were visualized through the correlation chart among the above parameters from this study.

Evaluation of Structural Behavior of Connections in Precast Arch Structures (프리캐스트 아치구조의 이음부 구조 거동 평가)

  • In this paper, a connection details for precast arch structures was proposed. Experiments were performed to evaluate structural performance of the loop connection details satisfying current design requirements and of alternative details for improvement of constructability. Precast arch specimens considering the current design requirements showed higher structural capacity than a cast-in-place arch specimen. Crack width at the connection of arch crown showed smaller value than 0.2 mm due to increased compression force by the applied vertical load. Strengthening by wire-mesh at notch area of the connection improved initial crack control capability. Connection detail with couplers and headed bars showed similar capacity to the reference specimen. The alternative details to improve constructability of reinforcements can be used without decreasing structural performance. Specimens with smaller internal diameter of mandrel and shorter loop splicing than the current design codes showed worse behavior in terms of crack width control.

Experimental Study on the Static Behavior of the Spliced PSC Box Girder (분절 PSC 박스거더의 정적거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The main objective of the paper is to investigate the static behavior of a prestressed concrete (PSC) girder that has been spliced with precast box segments. A 20 m long full-scale spliced PSC girder is fabricated and tested to compare its static performance against a monolithic girder. The monolithic girder has the same geometric and material properties with respect to the spliced girder. This includes infernal strain, deflections, neutral axis position, and crack patterns for both girders. The test also consists of monitoring relative displacements occurring across the joints. Both the horizontal displacement (gap) and vertical displacement (sliding) are measured throughout the loading procedure. All results have been compared to those obtained from the monolithic girder. It has been demonstrated that the spliced girder offers close behavior with respect to the monolithic girder up to the crack load. Both girders exhibits ductile flexural failure rather than abrupt shear failure at joints.

Loading Effect on ACPD of a Crack in Paramagnetic Material (균열을 가진 상자성체의 교류전위차에 미치는 하중의 영향)

  • In order to determine the mode I stress intensity factor ($K_I$) by means of the alternating current potential drop(ACPD) technique, the change in potential drop due to load for a paramagnetic material containing a two-dimensional surface crack was examined. The cause of the change in potential drop and the effects of the magnetic flux and the demagnetization on the change in potential drop were clarified by using the measuring systems with and without removing the magnetic flux from the circumference of the specimen. The change in potential drop was linearly decreased with increasing the tensile load and was caused by the change in conductivity near the crack tip. The reason of decreasing the change in potential drop with increasing the tensile load was that the increase of the conductivity near the crack tip due to the tensile load caused the decreases of the resistance and internal inductance of the specimen The relationship between the change in potential drop and the change in $K_I$ was not affected by demagnetization and was independent of the crack length.
