  • Crack penetration behavior by fatigue crack propagation and measurements of AE before-and-after crack penetration were examined using SS41 steel plate. Experimental crack shape of SU type was in good agreement with calculated shape rather than S type. Crack propagation behavior on the front surface appears not to change markedly after penetration. However, crack growth on the back surface appears to accelerate as reported by author. As a crack propagates, AE occurred heavily just before penetration. Then, it decreases and crack is penetrating. A transition from plane strain to plane stress was observed by fractographic study. At this time, separation of fracture surface was shown which affects AE occurrence.

  • In this research, damage behavior of singly oriented ply (SOP) fiber metal laminate (FML) subjected to concentrated load was studied. The static indentation tests were conducted to study fiber orientation effect on damage behavior of FML. During the static indentation tests, acoustic emission technique (AE) was adopted to study damage characteristics of FML. AE signals were obtained by using AE sensor with 150kHz resonance frequency and the signals were compared with indentation curves of FML. The damage process of SOP FML was divided by three parts, i.e., crack initiation, crack propagation, and penetration. The AE characteristics during crack initiation show that the micro crack is initiated at lower ply of the plate, then propagate along the thickness of the plate with creating tiber debonding. The crack grow along the fiber direction with occurring 60∼80dB AE signal. During the penetration, the fiber breakage was observed. As fiber orientation increases, talc fiber breakage occurs more frequently. The AE signal behaviors support these results. Cumulative AE counts could well predict crack initiation and crack propagation and AE amplitude were useful for the prediction of damage failure mode.

  • This paper provides engineering J-integral and crack opening displacement (COD) estimation equations for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under internal pressure and under combined internal pressure and bending. Based on selected 3-D finite element calculations for the circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under internal pressure using the idealized power law materials, the elastic and plastic influence functions for fully plastic J-integral and COD solutions are found as a function of the normalized crack length and the mean radius-to-thickness ratio. These developed GE/EPRI-type solutions are then re-formulated based on the enhanced reference stress method. Such re-formulation not only provides simpler equations for J-integral and COD estimations, but also can be easily extended to combined internal pressure and bending. The proposed equations are compared with elastic-plastic finite element results using actual stress-strain data, which shows overall excellent agreement.

  • This paper presents experimental validation of the enhanced reference stress based J estimates for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes, recently proposed by authors. Using the pipe test data for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes, the predicted fracture initiation and maximum moments according to the proposed enhanced reference stress method are compared with experimental ones as well as predictions from the R6 method. The results show that both the R6 method and the proposed method give conservative estimates of initiation and maximum moments for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes, compared to experimental data. For longer cracks, the proposed method reduces conservatism embedded in estimated J according to the R6 method, and the resulting predictions are less conservative, compared to those from the R6 method. For shorter cracks, on the other hand, the proposed method reduces possible non-conservatism embedded in estimated J according to the R6 method, and the resulting predictions are slightly more conservative.

  • This paper compares engineering estimation schemes of C* and creep COD for circumferential and axial through-wall cracked pipes at elevated temperatures with detailed 3-D elastic-creep finite element results. Engineering estimation schemes included the GE/EPRI method, the reference stress method where reference stress is defined based on the plastic limit load and the enhanced reference stress method where the reference stress is defined based on the optimized reference load. Systematic investigations are made not only on the effect of creep-deformation behaviour on C* and creep COD, but also on effects of the crack location, the pipe geometry, the crack length and the loading mode. Comparison of the FE results with engineering estimations provides that for idealized power law creep, estimated C* and COD rate results from the GE/EPRI method agree best with FE results. For general creep-deformation laws where either primary or tertiary creep is important and thus the GE/EPRI method is hard to apply, on the other hand, the enhanced reference stress method provides more accurate and robust estimations for C* and COD rate than the reference stress method.

  • The characteristics of elastic waves emanating from crack initiation and propagation in 6061 aluminum alloy subjected to fatigue loading with different stress ratio was investigated. The objective of this study is to determine the properties of the signals generated from each stage of fatigue crack growth. AS a crack propagates, substantial elastic wave occurred just prior to penetration. Then it decreased and the crack penetrated. The waveforms and their power spectra were found to be dependent on the different stress ratio associated with the signals. It is determined that high-frequency signal $0.5{\sim}0.75$ MHz is most likely emitted during crack propagation at peak load of fatigue cycle which release the highest energy. It is determined that 0.3 MHz is closely related to crack closure effect. The frequency peaks below 0.25 MHz may be attributed to fretting or hydraulic noise.

  • This paper proposes engineering estimation equations of elastic-plastic J and COD fur axial through-wall cracked pipes under internal pressure. Based on detailed 3-D FE results based on deformation plasticity, the plastic influence functions for fully plastic J and COD solutions are tabulated as a function of the mean radius-to-thickness ratio, the normalized crack length. and the strain hardening. Based on these results, the GE/EPRI-type J and COD estimation equations are proposed and validated against the 3-D FE results based on deformation plasticity. For more general application to general stress-strain laws or to complex loading, the developed GE/EPRI-type solutions are re-formulated based on the reference stress concept. Such a reformulation provides simpler equations for J and COD, which are then further extended to combined internal pressure and bending. The proposed reference stress based J and COD estimation equations are compared with elastic-plastic 3-D FE results using actual stress-strain data for Type 316 stainless steels. The FE results for both internal pressure cases and combined internal pressure and bending cases compare very well with the proposed J and COD estimations.

  • To maintain the structural integrity of steam generator tubes, 40% of wall thickness plugging criterion has been developed. The approach is for the steam generator tube with single crack, so that the interaction effect of multiple cracks can not be considered. Although, recently, several approaches have been proposed to assess the integrity of steam generator tube with two identical cracks whilst actual multiple cracks reveal more complex shape. In this paper, the coalescence pressure of steam generator tube containing multiple cracks of different length is evaluated based on the detailed 3-dimensional (3-D) elastic-plastic finite element (FE) analyses. In terms of the crack shape, two collinear axial through-wall cracks with different length were considered. Furthermore, the resulting FE coalescence pressures are compared with FE coalescence pressures and experimental results for two identical collinear axial through-wall cracks to quantify the effect of crack length ratio on failure behavior of steam generator tube with multiple cracks. Finally, based on 3-D FE results, the coalescence evaluation diagrams were proposed.

  • This study investigated the effect of heat treatment conditions not only on the Cr surface crack propagation behaviors but also on the Ni/Cr interfacial reaction characteristics in electroless Ni/electroplated Cr double coating layers on Cu substrate. Clear band layer of Ni-Cr solid solutions were developed at Ni/Cr interface after heat treatment at $750^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. Channeling cracks formed in Cr layer after 1 step heat treatment, that is, heat treatment after Ni/Cr plating, while little channeling cracks formed after 2 step heat treatment, that is, same heat treatments after Ni and Cr plating, respectively, due to residual stress relaxation due to crystallization of Ni layer before Cr plating.
