  • Automobile shredder residue (ASR) is the final waste produced when end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are shredded. ASR can be separated using mineral-processing operations such as comminution, air classification, magnetic separation, and/or electrostatic separation. In this work, trajectory analyses of conductors (copper) and non-conductors (glass) in the ASR have been carried out using induction electrostatic separator for predicting or improving the ASR-separation efficiency. From results of trajectory analysis for conductors, the trajectories of copper wire by observation versus simulation for coarse particles of 0.5 and 0.25 mm showed consistent congruity. The observed 0.06 mm fine-particles trajectory was deflected toward the (-) attractive electrode owing to the charge-density effects due to the particle characteristics and relative humidity. In the case of non-conductors, the actual trajectory of dielectric glass deflected toward the (-) electrode, showing characteristics similar to those of conductive particles. The analyses of stereoscopic microscope and SEM & EDS found heterologous materials (fine ferrous particles and conductive organics) on the glass surface. This demonstrates the glass decreasing separation efficiency for non-ferrous metals during electrostatic separation for the recycling of ASR. Future work will require a pretreatment process for eliminating impurities from the glass and advanced trajectory-simulation processes.

  • The present work is to analyze the longitudinal static stability and the drop trajectory of fighter aircraft's external fuel tank, of which horizontal fin is modified as the 20% scale down size compared with the original one. The analytical results to the pitching stability of external fuel tank using a thin airfoil's aerodynamic force data show the corresponding tendency to results of wind tunnel experiment. Results of trajectory simulation by the 6 degree of freedom equations of motion, comparing with drop trajectories of wind tunnel experiment, are shown that aircraft's attitude affects strongly on horizontal movement but not on the vertical movement. Those results give the reliability to aircraft safety when the external fuel tank with the 20% reduced horizontal fins is released from aircraft based on the flight manual.

  • The flight trajectory of a boomerang is predicted with the momentum theory (actuating disk theory) and the blade element method generally used as tools to analyze in the rotary-wing aerodynamics. Boomerangs made by students are actually compared with the computational results, utilized to get the physical intuition. The transition from helicopter mode to autogyro mode with the gyroscopic precession is observed in numerical analysis and experiment like a 'flying rotor' after the boomerang taking off. The whole system is shown to be highly nonlinear and very sensitive to the initial conditions. Various flight loci may be obtained if we change the parameters.

  • The main objective of this paper is to control a trajectory tracking of the fish-mimetic robot by CPG (Central Pattern Generator), which is biological approach. CPG is biological neural networks that generate rhythmic movements for locomotion of animals, such as walking, running, swimming and flying. Animals show marvelous ability of autonomous dynamic adaptation for an unsteady fluid dynamic environment or various environments. So, we propose the 3-DOF CPG controller to track the trajectory of the fish robot in plane motion. The conformity of the proposed control algorithm is validated by simulation for a fish robot model, which is made by a commercial dynamic package.

  • In this study, a multibody simulator was developed to analyze the bio-mimetic motion of a lizard robot design. A RecurDyn multibody dynamics model of a lizard was created using a micro-computerized tomography scan and motion capture data. The bio-mimetic motion simulator consisted of a trajectory generator, an inverse kinematics module, and an inverse dynamics module, which were used for various walking motion analyses of the developed lizard model. The trajectory generation module produces spinal movements and gait trajectories based on the lizard's speed. Using the joint angle history from an inverse kinematic analysis, an inverse dynamic analysis can be carried out, and the required joint torques can be obtained for the lizard robot design. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the developed simulator, the required joint torques of the model were calculated using the simulator.

  • A particle trajectory model to simulate two-phase particle-laden crossjets into two-dimensional horizontal free stream has been developed to study the variations of the jet trajectories and velocity variations of the gaseous and the particulate phases. The following conclusions may be drawn from the predicted results, which are in agreement with experimental observations. The penetration of the two-phase jet in a crossflow is greater than that of the single-phase jet. The penetration of particles into the free stream increases with increasing particle size, solids-gas loading ratio and carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio at the jet exit. When the particle size is large, the solid particles separate from the carrier gas , while the particles are completely suspended in the carrier gas for the case of small size particles. As the particle to carrier gas velocity ratio at the jet exit is less than unity, the particles in the vicinity of the jet exit are accelerated by the carrier gas. As the injection angle is increased, the difference of the particle trajectory from that of the pure gas becomes larger. Therefore, it can be concluded that the velocities and trajectories of the particle-laden jets in a crossflow change depending on the solids-gas loading ratio, particle size, carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio and particle to gas velocity ratio at the jet exit.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of reconstruction filters, X-ray source trajectories and intervals in the quality of digital tomosynthesis (DT) images, and the results was clinically validated. The filtered back-projection was implemented by using Ramp, Shepp-Logan, Cosine, Hamming, Hann and Blackman filters, and the X-ray source trajectories were simulated with 1 × 36, 2 × 18, 3 × 12, 4 × 9 and 6 × 6 arrays. The X-ray source intervals were 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mm. The depth resolution, spatial resolution and noise of DT image were evaluated by measuring artifact spread function (ASF), full width at half maximum (FWHM) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), respectively. The results showed that the spatial resolution and noise properties of DT images were maximized by the Ramp and Blackman filters, respectively, and the depth resolution and noise properties of the DT images obtained with a 1 × 36 X-ray source trajectory were superior to the other trajectories. The depth resolution and noise properties of DT images improved with an increase of X-ray source intervals, and the high X-ray source intervals degraded the spatial resolution of DT images. Therefore, the characteristics of DT images are highly dependent on reconstruction filters, X-ray source trajectories and intervals, and it is necessary to use optimal imaging parameters in accordance with diagnostic purpose.

  • The present simulation model relies on a new approach of the heavy particle motion in a turbulent flow considering the time and space correlation to the Lagrangian point of view. The turbulent field is, here, assumed that its characteristic scales are random and follow a Poisson's distribution. Using this model, we have computed the trajectory of each particle, that is, its velocity and position at each time in order to study the dispersion of particles in a grid turbulent flow. The computed results have been compared to the corresponding experimental data. Due to the complex mechanism of turbulence and the theoretically and experimentally lacking information, we had to make some assumptions for simplifying the situation, but we have found the good agreement between simulated and measured results. In particular, the application of the present method on the Lagrangian correlation of particle provides an interesting alternative to the usual computational methods.
