Tenacibaculum maritimum (formerly Flexibacter maritimus) is the aetiological agent of an ulcerative and necrotic disease commonly called tenacibaculosis in marine fish. Tenacibaculosis is an economically important disease in a great variety species in Jeju Island cultured fish and leading to this pathogen initially affected by skin, mouth, fins, tail causing severe necrotic and ulcerative lesions on the body surface. In the present study, A-7 strain was isolated from Paralichthys olivaceus showing symptoms of tenacibaculosis and identified as T. maritimum by morphological, biochemical and molecular biological analysis. T. maritimum A-7 is experimentally infected through immersion route in Paralichthys olivaceus which the disease outbreaks in land-based fish tanks of Jeju Island. Up to data a number of treatments proposed for the tenacibaculosis outbreaks are based on the immersion administration of drugs in tank. Oxytetracycline is the most widely used disinfectants in fish farms. However, most of fish farms manager and consumers have expressed concern as bioaccumulation in tissue and its environmental. In addition, this antimicrobial compounds is expensive in fish farmers. The overcome of this problem is desired the application of natural plant derived products. To obtain as 70% EtOH extract antimicrobial compounds against tenacibaculosis from 35 species of Jeju Island native plants were screened for antimicrobial activity against T. maritimum. In the present study were identified most of the plant extracts were better antimicrobial activity against T. maritimum.

In the present study, the curative effect of curcumin on indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats was investigated. Indomethacin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), with serious side effects, including erosion, ulcerative lesions, and petechial bleeding in the mucosa of the stomach. Gastric mucosal lesions were caused by oral administration of 25 mg/kg of indomethacin. Various doses (10, 50, and 100 mg/kg) of curcumin were treated for 3 days by oral gavage. Indomethacin clearly increased the gastric ulcer area in the stomach, and curcumin significantly decreased the gastric ulcer area in a dose-dependent manner. Curcumin also markedly inhibited lipid peroxidation in the gastric mucosa and activated radical scavenging enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that curcumin can induce recovery from indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions through inhibition of lipid peroxidation and activation of radical scavenging enzymes, such as SOD, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Curcumin appears to be a powerful free radical quencher, and it may offer an attractive strategy for healing gastric mucosal lesions in humans.

The purpose of this study was to investigate repeated-dose toxicity in male and female rats orally administered with Pediococcus pentosaceus MD1, an anti-Helicobacter pyroli producing lactic acid bacteria isolated from kimchi. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups, 10 animals in each group. The test article was administered once daily by gavage to rats at dose levels of 0, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 mg/kg for 4 weeks. No test article-related deaths and clinical findings in both sexes of rats during the study period were resulted. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in body weight changes, food intake consumption and water consumptions. Hematological parameters, serum biochemical analysis and any other findings did not also show any significant or dose-dependent alterations. There were no alterations in absolute and relative organ weights by the administration of Pediococcus pentosaceus MD1. These results suggest that no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of Pediococcus pentosaceus MD1 is considered to be more than 2 g/kg in male and female rats.
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare clinicopathologic entity of unknown etiology with a variety of digestive symptoms. The pathogenesis is poorly understood. Diagnostic criteria include demonstration of eosinophilic infiltration of the affected bowel wall, lack of evidence of extraintestinal disease, and exclusion of various disorders that could mimic similar conditions. The disease might involve any area of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum, but the stomach and the proximal small bowel are most commonly affected. The clinical features depend on which layer and site are involved. We report the case of a 59-year-old male patient with a 3-week history of post-prandial vomiting with malnutrition and weight loss. An abdominopelvic CT showed a gastric outlet obstruction with diffuse wall thickening, as with linitis plastica. Three gastrofiberscopic biopsies showed chronic gastritis. We carried out a radical total gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection. The pathologic report revealed a mural type eosinophilic gastritis with a marked hypertrophic scar formation at the proper muscle layer. We report this case with a brief review of the literature. This case report describes about recurrent herpetic stomatitis mimicking post-root resection complication. A 49 year-old male patient was diagnosed vertical root fracture of the mesiobuccal root of his left maxillary first molar (#26). The mesiobuccal root was resected following root canal treatment of the same tooth. 19 months later, the patient presented with pain on left hard palate after a barbecue party. Intra oral examination revealed a gum boil-like blister at the hard palate corresponding to the apex of the palatal root of #26. On clinical examination, there was bleeding on probing and the periodontal pocket depth was measured less than 5 mm with no tooth mobility. On a periapical radiograph, periodontal ligament space widening was observed. Tracing the sinus tract with gutta percha cone was attempted, however, it was impossible. Extending the field of vision, small multiple round ulcerations were observed at the palate front which caused pain to the patient. Therefore, the pain was considered a non odontogenic and the patient was referred to the department of oral medicine. The patient was diagnosed recurrent herpetic stomatitis and after 3 days of antiviral medication, the pain and ulceration were subsided.
Behcet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, and ocular inflammation, and which may involve the joints, skin, central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. Although the exact pathogenesis for BD is not completely understood, it has been suggested that the disease is triggered in genetically susceptible individuals by environmental factors, such as microbial agents. It is noted that multiple genes, including MHC (major histocompatibility complex) and non-MHC genes, are implicated in the pathogenesis of BD. This study tries to determine whether IL-6 gene polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to Behcet's disease in Koreans. Gene polymorphisms were typed by VNTR (variable number of tandem repeat), RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism), DHPLC (denaturing high performance liquid chromatography). There were no evidences for genetic association conferred by the IL-6prom polymorphism. However, significant differences in the IL-6vntr genotype and allele frequencies were found between patients with BD and controls. The IL-6vntr*C allele appeared to be an additional susceptibility gene to Korean BD. Further studies in other populations and gene are required to confirm these results.
Background: This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of capsule endoscopy (CE) for the diagnosis of small bowel diseases. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 66 patients (mean age: 52.1 years, male/female: 39/27), who underwent CE at Yeungnam University Hospital from August 2003 to March 2006. Results: Suspicious gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding presenting as anemia or history of gross bleeding was the most common reason to perform CE (71.2%). Other indications included GI symptoms (21.2%) such as abdominal pain/discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, and others (7.6%). In studies performed for GI bleeding (n=47), ulcer/erosion was the most common finding (n=22, 46.8%) followed by tumor (n=5, 10.6%), angiodysplasia (n=3, 6.4%), polyp (n=3, 6.4%), active bleeding (n=1, 2.1 %), ulcer with stenosis (n=1, 2.1%), and normal findings (n=12, 25.5%). Of these, a bleeding focus was detected in 32 cases (68.1%) undergoing CE studies. Among 14 patients with GI symptoms, only two patients had typical findings related with symptoms. Surgical resection was performed in five cases with tumor. Of these, four were diagnosed as gastrointestinal stromal tumor and the other one was a lymphangioma. There were no complications associated with the CE procedure. Conclusion: Capsule endoscopy is a safe, noninvasive diagnostic tool for small bowel diseases and may be useful for the diagnosis of small bowel hemorrhage including obscure bleeding. However, further studies are needed to confirm its utility for abdominal symptoms other than hemorrhage because of the low diagnostic yield.

In this study, the extent of the impact of rainfall on the outbreak of fire blight during the blossom infection risk period was explored. In the Chungnam province, the outbreak of fire blight disease began in 2015, and changes in the outbreak's scale were most pronounced between 2020 and 2022, significantly escalating from 63 orchards in 2020 to 170 orchards in 2021, before decreasing to 46 orchards in 2022. In 2022, the number of incidence has decreased and the number of canker symptom in branches has also decreased. It was evaluated that the significant decrease of fire blight disease in 2022 was due to the dry weather during the flowering season. In other words, this yearly fluctuation in fire blight outbreaks was correlated with the presence or absence of rainfall and accumulated precipitation during the blossom infection risk period. This trend was observed across all surveyed regions where apples and pears were cultivated. Among the weather conditions influencing the blossom infection risk period, rainfall notably affected the activation of pathogens from over-wintering cankers and flower infections. In particular, precipitation during the initial 3 days of the blossom infection risk warning was confirmed as a decisive factor in determining the outbreak's scale.
The authors would record the fifth case of human fascioliasis in Korea, occurring in a 48 year old Korean man who lived in Munkyong, Kyongsangbuk-do. The diagnosis was based on the morphology and measurements of the eggs which were collected in necrotic debris from the tunnel-like ulcerations of the gallbladder wall which was surgically removed for a gall stone. Although we failed to find out the fluke in the specimen, there found an evidence of once presence of Fasciola in the inflamed wall of the gallbladder in this patient.

PFAPA (periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, cervical adenitis) syndrome is one of the causes of periodic fever in pediatrics with unknown etiology. It is characterized by abrupt onset of fever, malaise, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis without long-term sequelae. Laboratory findings of this sporadic and nonhereditary syndrome are so non-specific that the diagnosis is based on clinical findings. Oral prednisolone is quite effective in controlling the symptoms. We report a case of a 6-year-old girl who was diagnosed as having PFAPA syndrome after 2 years of episodes, by excluding other disease entities with similar clinical features. The patient was treated with oral prednisolone and her symptoms improved dramatically.
