  • For the construction of NATM tunnel, it is required a design based on the accurate soil condition from soil investigation. However, in practice, it often designs tunnels without fully understanding the condition. Especially, when soft soil comes up, or ground water breaks out suddenly on the construction, it needs to secure the stability of tunnel by appropriate reinforcing construction according to the results of measurements on field superlatively reflecting the faced situation. This report reviews the mostsuitable stability of tunnel in the construction of soft soil of tunnel by numerical analysis using FDM after re-evaluated the soil properties through back analysis using the results of measurements to simulate abruptly occurred deformation. And applying steel pipe grouting row by row on the wall and the low part of tunnel and also applying the construction method of temporary invert after excavation of the upper part of tunnel, the excavation of soft soil tunnel secured the structural stability of tunnel has been completed.

  • Recently, road tunnels have become longer and the plans for long and deep road tunnel have been underway in urban areas. These long and deep tunnel excavations include NATM and TBM. Shield TBM is applied to around 80% of traffic tunnels in Europe, and approximately 30% of them in other developed countries. However, as much of equipment is imported from foreign countries at high prices and distribution rate of TBM tunnel is considerably low in Korea, NATM excavation method is commonly used. To increase TBM tunnel, it is necessary to do assure economic feasibility with the supply-demand of TBM equipment. For this, the selection of standardized TBM diameter is urgently needed. Therefore, the study aims to estimate the standardized optimum section properties of TBM by examining TBM excavation cross section utilization depending on the volume of traffic, the number of lane and its cross-section type(single or double deck), and ventilation system.

  • In this study, the flow analysis to evaluate the extent of groundwater decline and the effect of the small valleys caused by the decrease of groundwater level in the construction of road tunnel, and the pollutant movement analysis to evaluate pollution of nearby water source by pollutant discharge during tunnel construction, respectively. The decrease of the groundwater during the 30 month tunnel excavation period was maximum 27 m and it was found to be the largest within 50 m from the tunnel center. The flow of groundwater is shown in the form of flowing into the tunnels and the effects of groundwater level decline were observed up to a tunnel radius of 200 m. As a result of the numerical modeling of the contaminant transport to examine the influence of the polluted water discharge from the tunnel, the range of the turbid water generated at the end of the tunnel is up to 120 m and it is estimated that the risk of contamination of the small river is not large.

  • Construction cost of tunnel is decided on construction area, site conditions, and construction methods. However, there is few research on developing models to estimate early construction costs. Therefore, this paper presents a model for early estimation tool for NATM tunnel using system thinking. The effect factors for tunnel construction cost were defined and the causal map is developed. Then empirical case analysis were performed to identify the cost difference due to tunnel length, excavation volume, and rock quality. The proposed model would be an alternative to estimate early construction cost of NATM tunnel.

  • Drilling operation for blasting is an important factor to determine blast effect. Drilling errors that arise from performing drilling for blasting purposes can reduce blasting effect causing residual holes, overbreak, and heterogeneous fragmentation, etc. Automatic drilling system was induced for precise drilling. As a result, drilling error caused by spaces between holes and burden was minor at 0~2.6% and accordingly, blasting effect was improved with over 90% drilling rate, the ratio of overbreak amount to total drilling amount at 4.3%, proportion of fragmentation rock under 50cm at 89~95% and so from this analyses, it was estimated to reduce the total cycle times related to blasting process.

  • The characteristics of subsidence above a shallow tunnel excavated in weathered rock mass is analyzed. The tunnel is excavated minimum about 11m beneath some buildings and the width of the tunnel is 11m, too. Subsidence pins are installed at 23 locations on surface along the tunnel, 180m long, adjacent to the buildings. Subsidences are measured for about 2 years and they are optimized to analyze three dimensional deformed ground surface, trough width parameter K and sectional volume loss of unit tunnel length Vs of the surface deformation profile.

  • The spacer, which is located between the bucket and the arm of an excavator, has a role in preventing damage to the excavator arm during excavation work. When the durability of the spacer is increased, the lifetime of the arm can be extended and the processing costs can be reduced. To increase the durability of the spacer, tungsten carbide (WC) coating was applied on the surface of a spacer using the plasma transferred arc (PTA) process. The confirm the durability, a wear test using a pin-on disk type of wear testing machine was done under the given conditions and the wear amount on the surface of a tested specimen was measured using reflective digital holography. The results were compared with that of ALPHA-STEP.

  • In this study, analysis of the disposal tunnel spacing and disposal pit pitch was carried out, as a factor of the design to estimate the scale and layout of the repository To do this, based on the reference repository concept and the engineered barrier concept, the cross section of the disposal tunnel and disposal pit are established and the mechanical and thermal stabilities of the tunnels are analyzed. Also, the optimized disposal tunnel spacing and the disposal pit pitch which minimize the excavation volume was proposed. The detailed analyses by the exact site characteristics data are needed to reduce the uncertainty of the site in the future.

  • In this study, a case study was introduced for the design of a twin tunnel along high speed national highway Route 12 from Damyang to Sungsan. It was related to determine the optimal tunnel support pattern and excavation method based on a risk analysis in order to incorporate the uncertainty of ground properties. To this end, three alternatives with different amounts of support and excavation method were selected and risk analysis was performed by applying Monte Carlo simulation technique, respectively. Stability of the tunnel was quantified by the factor of safety. To improve the result, the 729 cases of the combination of ground properties (deformation modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle) satisfying a Gaussian distribution were generated and applied. Also, stability of the tunnel was confirmed by analyzing the distribution of both displacement and shotcrete bending stress.

  • Great efforts have been made worldwide to reduce the Green House Gas (GHG) emission following the "Kyoto Protocol" declared during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1997. Many industries have restructured to meet the standard set by the Protocol. However, no clear guidance has been established for the purpose of reducing the GHG emission in construction industry. In addition, no significant effort has been made to conserve the energy during construction activities. For more effective energy saving in construction industry, it is essential to collect data about energy consumption, quantity of environmental emissions and costs. However, most studies on sustainable construction have been concentrated on the use of equipment, maintenance and repair works during construction due to the difficulties of collecting such data. This study suggests a method to select the most environmentally friendly equipment combination for earthwork with comparing environmental loads and costs using the database of Life Cycle Inventory in the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and Ministry of Environment of Korea.
