  • In this study, the Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) in military barracks is evaluated and its characteristics is discussed as well. The military barracks of R.O.K Army are categorized into three types and the IAQ in these individual facilities is measured for 24 hours both in summer and winter. Test results show that the particulate matters($PM_{10}$) and carbon dioxide($CO_2$) were the main causes contaminating IAQ in military barracks. While $CO_2$ can be purified by ventilation, adequate facilities have to be installed in case of the new type of combination barracks to remove $PM_{10}$. In addition, to improve the living condition of military barracks and to recover IAQ in new combination style barracks which is planned to complete by 2011, a standard or law regulating IAQ in military barracks has to be established.

  • The objective of this study was to establish Facility classification for military barracks among military facilities. The military barracks are the place where soldiers spend most of their time. Thus, a new type of space in military barracks is required to improve the quality of life of the soldiers and make the military more advanced for national defense. The research method was to derive problems through a survey of the previous literature and case studies and to select target places in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine based on the derived problems. An improvement scheme was proposed by developing criteria for military barracks spaces through a questionnaire survey. The following results were obtained: Facility classification inside of national defense military facility standard should be reorganized. The alternative plan is demanded for some camp which has no need about setting up the office facility. And the study of reasonable facility area after improvementing facility categorization is required.

  • A unit modular system is a construction method which installs on site by manufacturing 50%~90% of the whole process in the factory. This method can minimize the process in the site and maximize the operation, which will reduce the duration and improve the overall quality. The recent paradigm of construction is to be sustainable building. Modular system can be regarded as a sustainable building construction method because it can reduce the amount of construction waste by recycling partial or whole part of overdue building be torn down. A unit modular system is the answer to cope with the increasing market of small size housings. A unit modular system is the most appropriate option at this point. This research proposes the standard operation and construction process of modular system, which enable to optimal system. A case study of reconstructing small-size housing was introduced to support this proposal. Finished unit modular is the reasonable way. However, 80% of complication rate of the modular is the most rational when a defect occurrence during delivery is considered.

  • Modular system is a construction method which installs factory-manufactured units on site. It enables to reduce the duration and improve the quality of the construction. Nevertheless, the unit modular system is restrictively applied to domestic market such as barracks, education facilities, low-rise housing. To motivate the application of unit modular system, this study figures out important attributes of the unit modular system in a domestic construction market. Finally this study suggest marketing strategies and influential factors by Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) based on those attributes focusing on the apartment housing. As a result, Unit modular System in the domestic market has strength on constructability, but it show weakness on usability and economic aspects which are more important in apartment housing market. Thus an improved technology in usability and economic aspects are required to activate the market.

  • The Construction industry is a labor-intensive industry that its labor cost takes up about 30~40% out of the whole construction cost. However, due to a stereotype that on-site work is a 3D job there is a shortage of the labor forces. Modular construction method is to produce modular units in the plant so that workers could work stably. Also, after delivering the module from plant to the site, there will be only installment to be required that shortens construction duration. Even though the modular market is currently expanding based on military facilities in Korea, its best strengths are not demonstrated well which are shortened construction period and low cost. It also causes labor problem of production due to minimum utilization of the modular construction method. Multi-skilled labor means a technician that is able to perform more than two kinds of work with more than two techniques. Multi-skilled labor can proceed smoothly by figuring out the connectivity between the precedent and following operations. Therefore, this research is to apply the concept of Multi-skilled labors, suggest solutions and allocate manpowers efficiently. As a result, it helps to decrease idle manpowers during the operation and the total labor forces can be saved. Low cost is the original strength of the modular which can stand out so the modular market is expected to expand.

  • Republic of Korea is recently becoming an advanced country with increasing standard of living. This is causing a lack of employment in the construction industry because of high labor costs and it is resulting rapid increase in foreign labors. Modular Method of Construction can be defined as 50%~90% of the entire process is completed in factory, and transferred to construction field to install. The main purpose of this process is to minimize the entire process that possibly can be done at construction field in order to maximize the quality. The current local usage of Modular Method of Construction started at Shin Ki Elementary School during 2003 and it is widely used for military facilities. It should be used more because it has strengths of spending short time period to complete and low production costs. It can make a change if Modular Method of Construction is applied. Toyota is currently producing vehicle with conveyor system and if Modular Method of Construction is applied, then it is possible to reduce the waste of labor, and automatic production time. Expansion of the modular Market can be expected by applying this method because it will improve producing costs, high quality, and enforced process. This research tried to solve the problem of factory's manufacturing production by applying local Modular Method of Construction to provide suggestions and analyze the profitability with applied conveyor system. It is depending on produced model, but this research's model will take 20 months including assessment of payback period.

  • The wooden fence(木柵), which began to appear in the Bronze Age and is presumed to be the oldest defense facility in human history, was used as a fortress for the purpose of further strengthening military defense functions until after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 in the Joseon Dynasty(壬辰倭亂). As it was established as the concept of a fortress or a fence installed outside a fence castle(城柵) or barracks fence(營柵), its importance as an essential facility for defense was further highlighted. This study is the result of exploring wooden fence that were used as official facilities during the Joseon Dynasty, focusing on literature surveys such as 『Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』 and 『New Jeungdonggukyeojiseungram』 In this study, in particular, the conclusion of this study is as follows, focusing on the use and function of Nokgakseong(鹿角城), underwater wooden fence, installation methods, and materials of wooden fences, is as follows. The conclusions of this study, which focused on the materials of the wooden fence, are as follows. First, as invasions by foreign enemies became more frequent in the late Goryeo and early Joseon Dynasty, wooden fences played a major role as a major out-of-castle defense facility((防禦施設). In addition, wooden fences were modified and installed into various types such as wooden fences(木柵城), Nokgakseong, a fence made up of large branches in the shape of a deer antler, and underwater wooden fences(水中木柵) according to the circumstances of the times, government policy, and location environment. Second, wooden fences were installed in strategic locations in defense facilities for military purposes, such as mountain fortress(山城), fortresses(營), camps(鎭), forts(堡), and castles(邑城) in strategic locations, and were used for defense in case of emergency. According to the urgency of farming, it was installed in accordance with the non-farming season, when it is easy to mobilize manpower to avoid the busy farming season. The size of the wooden fence of the Joseon Dynasty, which are confirmed through literature records, was converted into Pobaekchuk(布帛尺), and the circumference was very diverse from 4,428chuk(2,066m) to 55chuk(25m). Third, Nokgakseong is an efficient combat support facility that is more aggressive than a general wooden fence, and the records of Nokgakseong in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty appeared during the King Sejong period the record was 20 times, the most. By region, it was found that it was mainly installed in coastal rugged areas such as Pyeongan and Hamgildo(12), which are the 6-jin areas of the 4th Army. Fourth, in the early 15th century, as the royal court established a maritime defense strategy for the coastal area of the southern coast, after the Sampo Invasion(三浦倭亂), riots by Japanese settlers in Sampo in 1510, major military posts including eupseong(邑城), camps, and forts were established. The installation of underwater barriers around various government facilities rapidly increased as a defense facility to block the warships of Japanese pirates around various government facilities. Fifth, between the 15th and 17th centuries before and after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in Sampo, underwater fences were installed in the Southern coast and Ganghwa Island. In particular, in the 15th century, underwater fences were intensively installed in coastal areas of Gyeongsangnam-do, such as Jepo. Pine trees and Oaks are the main materials used for underwater fences, but other materials such as Oldham's meliosma, Loose-flower hornbeam and The vines of arrowroots were also used as materials for wooden fences.
