The main purpose of this study is to develop XML schemata and related STEP model for sharing construction drawings information. To achieve this purpose, the authors have developed a drawing information model based on STEP/AP202, the data searching mechanism based on STEP, and XML schemata for sharing and exchanging information between vector data and non-shape attribute information. Finally, the authors have suggested the way of sharing drawing information through linked STEP data and a XML schema using test cases of construction material information and code checking. The study shows a way of optimized managing and sharing construction information through the drawing information and external data for the whole building life-cycle, from early design stage to the construction stage.

In the domestic construction field, there are a lot of problems related to construction information exchange and sharing owing to the absence of construction drawing information exchange standard. To solve the problems effectively, it is necessary to apply STEP standard that is international standard and standard technology for achieving the establishment of Construction CALS. This study focus on suggesting a methodology to solve problems which occur to the current construction drawing information exchanging and sharing practice. The domestic and foreign standardization projects related to the construction drawing information have been investigated and analyzed. In result, a methodology of applying the STEP standard has been suggested. In addition, a verification and certification methodology for applying the CALS/EC construction drawing information exchange standard(STEP) have been suggested.

In the construction industry, construction process includes a variety of design stages with cooperation and regulation by many related disciplines. In addition, the construction market is growing and becoming more complex. With this characteristic, design information has become more and more complicated and difficult to manage by the simple and traditional data management methodology. In the practical field, although CAD has been widely available for the last ten years, related disciplines have not shared digital information efficiently. This paper suggests a construction CAD data exchange model that has been developed through investigation and analysis of Korean construction CAD practices and foreign CAD standards. Moreover, this paper investigates a CAD data exchange model using STEP to improve information availability and overcome the limit of CAD systems.
