  • An efficient and useful method to improve the local stress field in a displacement-formulated finite element solution has been proposed using the theory of conjugate approximations for a stress field and the Loubignac's iterative method for a displacement field. Validity of the proposed method has been tested through three test examples, to improve the stress field and displacement field in the whole domain and the local regions. As a result of analysis on the test examples, it is found that the stress field in the local regions are approximated to those in the whole domain within a few iterations which have satisfied the original finite element equilibrium equation. In addition, it is found that the local stress field are by far better approximated to the exact stress field than the displacement-based stress field with the reduction of the finite-element mesh-size.

  • This paper presented the analysis of stress regimes in and around inactive and active fault zones. The stress regime in the vicinity of an existing inactive fault zone is dependent on the orientation of the fault with respect to the current stress field and the contrast between the elastic properties of the faulted rock and those of the surrounding rock. In the analysis of stress regimes around an active fault zone, if the yielding stress is exceeded during loading, the localized shearing in a fault zone will result in weakness with mean stresses in the fault becoming lower than those in the surrounding rock. It can be expected that such stress gradients will induce fluid flow towards the faults zone.

  • Based on the application of te theory of conjugate approximations and the Loubignac's iterative method in a local region, a method to improve the stress filed in a displacement-formulated finite element solution has been proposed. The validity of the proposed method has been tested through two examples : a thick cylinder under internal pressure loading and an infinite plate with a central circular hole subjected to uniaxial tension. As a result of analysis of the examples, it was found that the stress field obtained for the local region model by the proposed method approximates well for the whole domain model. In addition, it was found that because of a significant decrease in the computing time to obtain the improved stress field, the proposed method is efficient and useful for the detailed stress analysis in local regions.

  • This paper presents two-dimensional boundary value problems of the stress-based gradient elasticity within the smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) framework. Gradient elasticity is introduced to address the limitations of classical elasticity, particularly its struggle to capture size-dependent mechanical behavior at the micro/nano scale. The Ru-Aifantis theorem is employed to overcome the challenges of high-order differential equations in gradient elasticity. This theorem effectively splits the original equation into two solvable second-order differential equations, enabling its incorporation into the S-FEM framework. The present method utilizes a staggered scheme to solve the boundary value problems. This approach efficiently separates the calculation of the local displacement field (obtained over each smoothing domain) from the non-local stress field (computed element-wise). A series of numerical tests are conducted to investigate the influence of the internal length scale, a key parameter in gradient elasticity. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in smoothing stress concentrations typically observed at crack tips and dislocation lines.

  • The quantitative assessment of the effect of the residual stress on fracture behavior was executed by some experiment and numerical analysis. First of all, artificial residual stresses were imposed on CT(Compact Tension) specimens by local heating using gas torch, and an appropriate distribution of residual stresses was obtained by thermal elastic-plastic FE analysis. To certify the result of the FE analysis, an experimental measurement was performed in accordance with ASTM standard. Fracture toughness test was executed on the several types of specimens. The first type was the specimen without residual stresses, and the others had different peak value of compressive residual stress at crack front via controlling the heat flux. All the test results were presented on th J resistance(JR) curves and discussed to verify the effect of compressive residual stresses on fracture behavior.

  • Experiments were performed to study the cyclic behavior of framed steel walls with thin web plates. Five specimens of single-bay and three-story steel plate walls were tested for cyclic lateral load. The parameters for the test specimens included the plate thickness and the column strength. Based on the test results, the strength, deformability, and energy dissipation capacity of the framed steel walls were studied. The test results showed that the behavioral characteristics of the framed steel walls with thin web plates were different in many aspects from those of the conventional braced frame, and the steel wall with a stiffened web plate exhibited cantilever action, high strength, and low ductility. With the framed steel plate walls, local plate buckling and tension-field action developed in the thin web plates, and plastic deformation was uniformly distributed along the wall's height. As a result, the framed steel plate walls exhibited combined flexural and shear deformation, but they also showed high strength and energy dissipation capacity. Moreover, such walls have high deformability, which was equivalent to that of the conventional moment frame. Frame members such as columns and beams, however, must be designed to resist the tension-field action of the thin web plates. If the column does not have sufficient strength, and if its sections are not compact enough, the overall strength of the framed steel wall might be significantly decreased by the development of the soft-story mechanism. The framed steel walls with thin web plates have advantages, such as high deformability and high strength. Therefore, they can be used as ductile elements in earthquake-resistant systems.

  • This paper presents a procedure of calculating a safety factor of the unsaturated slope suffering from the rainfall infiltration. The process of infiltration into a slope due to rainfall and its effect on the behavior of the soil slope are examined by using a two dimensional finite element flow-deformation coupled analysis. A factor of safety is calculated at various elapsed times after the commencement of rainfall as in the following procedure. First, stresses are estimated at each Gaussian point from the coupled finite element analysis. Then, the global stress smoothing method is applied to get a continuous stress field. Based on this stress field, a factor of safety is calculated for a specified slip surface by a stress integration scheme. Then, a search strategy is used to find out a critical slip surface which is associated with the minimum factor of safety. Some numerical examples are analyzed in order to study the effect of hydraulic conductivity on the slope stability during rain-induced infiltration. According to the results, local failure zone can be formed near the slope surface due to inhomogeneous distribution of hydraulic conductivity If the failure zone is once formed, then the region extends until a large amount of slide activates. Therefore the local failure can be neglected no longer in the stability analysis.

  • In the welded structure, the most dengerous section is welded parts and almost fractures of welded structure occur from welded parts. Accordingly, in other to prevents of fracture, it is important seeking the fracture behavior of welded parts. In this study as basic investigation of fracture behavior of welded parts, it is investigated that local distribution of fracture toughness and effect of multipass electrode welding, also effect of release of residual stress were investigated, as the subjected. material, the used steel having fatigue history and unused steel were selected. As the result of this study, it is dear that the base metal of unused steel and heat affected zone and weld metal are different each other in fracture toughness, and it seems clear that the weld metal may will become source of fracture because of it having the most low fracture toughness. Especially, in the case of crack occur in the used steel, it will be the most brittle section in the structure because of it having low fracture toughness then weld metal. It affirmation that, if welded parts has not flaw, the multi pass electrode welding effective to improve of fracture toughness, also release of residual stress is none effective to improve of fracture toughness in this study.
