  • Construction industry has played a pivotal role in the national economy, but the crisis situation of a construction industry has been worse due to the lack of recognition of the contribution of a construction industry. In particular, the transport sector is responsible for a critical function in the movement of humans and material resources, and has a profound impact on national competitiveness and the peoples' welfare, which requires quantitative analysis. In this study, economic contribution and impact of the transportation sector are measured based on the input-output model. Road and railway facilities account for 1.03% and 0.165% of the total industry respectively, and consist of a final demand and total output. Although value-added inducing effect is small, production inducing effect and backward linkage effect has been high. The results in this study will be used as the basic information for validity of investment and policy decisions.

  • The Korean government made the 2nd Energy Basic Plan to achieve 11% of new and renewable energies distribution rate until 2035 as a response to cope with international discussion about greenhouse gas emission reduction. Renewable energies include solar thermal, photovoltaic, bioenergy, wind power, small hydropower, geothermal energy, ocean energy, and waste energy. New energies contain fuel cells, coal gasification and liquefaction, and hydrogen. As public and private investment to enhance the distribution of new and renewable energies, it is necessary to clarify the economic effects of the new and renewable energies sector. To the end, this study attempts to apply an input-output analysis and analyze the economic effects of new and renewable energies sector using 2012 input-output table. Three topics are dealt with. First, production-inducing effect, value-added creation effect, and employment-inducing effect are quantified based on demand-driven model. Second, supply shortage effects are analyzed employing supply-driven model. Lastly, price pervasive effects are investigated applying Leontief price model. The results of this analysis are as follows. First, one won of production or investment in new and renewable energies sector induces 2.1776 won of production and 0.7080 won of value-added. Moreover, the employment-inducing effect of one billion won of production or investment in new and renewable energies sector is estimated to be 9.0337 persons. Second, production shortage cost from one won of supply failure in new and renewable energies sector is calculated to be 1.6314 won, which is not small. Third, the impact of the 10% increase in new and renewable energies rate on the general price level is computed to be 0.0123%, which is small. This information can be utilized in forecasting the economic effects of new and renewable energies sector.

  • This study attempts to examine the economic impacts of electricity industry in Korea and Japan using an inter-industry analysis. Specifically, the study analyzes and compares electricity industry between Japan and Korea through production-inducing effect and value added inducing effect of electricity industry based on demand-driven model. Moreover, this study deals with supply shortage effect and sectoral price effect by using supply-driven model and Leontief price model, respectively. This study analyses the electricity industry through exogenous approach. The results show that electricity industry induces prodution-inducing effect of 0.5946 won in other industries in Korea and 0.5446 yen in other industries in Japan. Value-added-inducing effects are 0.1716 won in other in other industries in Korea and 0.2929 yen in other industries in Japan. Supply shortage effects of electricity industry are 1.5932 won in other industries in Korea and 1.2801 yen in other industries in Japan. And sectoral price effects are 0.2113% in Korea and 0.2196% in Japan due to the price increase of 10% of electricity industry.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the macro-economic ripple effect of tax exemption for both high end technology firms and research enterprises in R&D special cluster. We apply the user cost of capital model and the Input-output model to the estimation. Estimation results for 2007-2016 are as follows: the increase in both the production and the value-added is 2,807 and 1,392 hundred million Korean won, respectively. Also, employers are increased by 2,355 people. These imply that keeping the tax exemption item for certain enterprises in R&D special cluster may be beneficial to our economy.

  • From the respect of economics, environmental industry has not defined clearly since environmental services and goods are so broad to focus. Therefore many countries are using their own version of environmental industry. Hence analysis of environmental industry is very limited. In this thesis, based on the definition of Bureau Statistical Office in Korea, economic analysis for the industrial spill effect, production effect, value-added effect has been done by using 1995, 1998 I-O tables published from the Bank of Korea. Even if portion of production from environmental industry in Korea is quite low so far, forward and backward effect has quite impact on the whole industry and show strong intermediate goods. With respect to price effect.

  • This paper tries to measure the spill-over effect of the production and investment of telecommunication service industry (hereafter telecommunication industry), using the most recent data of 2003 input-output tables. The results are summarized as follows. First, the industries which have the biggest spill-over effect from the production of telecommunication industry is miscellaneous business service (including the sale commission of telecommunication service), other engineering services (including royalty), and business consumption. Second, the production of telecommunication industry induces more value-added, and less production, less import, and less employment than related industries such as radio and television equipment, communications and broadcasting equipment, and computer and peripheral equipment. Third, while the investment of telecommunication service amounts to 15% of its production, the effect of the investment on production, value-added, consumption, and employment reaches 70% of that of its production. The policy implication of this paper is that the telecommunication industry contributes to overall economy mainly through its investment.

  • This study measures the investment effects of railroad industries on Korean economics, using the table of industry relation analysis. Until now, few studies have analyzed the economic effects of railroad in Korea so that this study can have a big implication for transportation policies in making decisions on its investment level as top priority. This study finds that railroad investment effects are larger than those of road on the national economics and, thus, impling that the expansion of railroad investment is required to grow continuously national economics as well as a major modal of transportation networks.

  • The electric power industry has played an important role in dramatic economic development in Korea and the electricity has constituted a critical factor sustaining the well-being of the Korean people. This study uses input-output analysis to investigate the role of four electric power sectors (hydroelectric, fossil-fuels, nuclear and non-utility) in the Korean national economy for the period 1985~1998, focusing on four topics: the impacts of electricity supply investments, the electricity supply shortage effects, and the impacts of the rise in electricity rates, and the inter-industry linkage effect. The overall results reveal that non-utility electric sector is superior in terms of the national economy-wide effects to other three sectors throughout the period. Finally, potential uses of the results are illustrated from the perspective of policy instruments and some policy implications are discussed.
