Detection of LM canola with tolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium via the Environmental monitoring in South Korea (자연생태계 모니터링을 통한 glyphosate와 glufosinate-ammonium에 저항성을 가지는 유전자변형 캐놀라의 발견)

  • Living modified (LM) crops are imported each year to South Korea as food and feeds, LM canola being one of the imported crops. The cultivation of LM crops is not permitted in South Korea but the import of these crops is increasing. In this study, we surveyed the environmental risk of imported LM canola at 9 provinces, from March 2009 to June 2013. Monitoring of canola was conducted around feed factories, roadsides, harbors, farmhouses, and flower festival regions. From the total of 595 canola samples collected from 1850 monitoring sites, we identified 6 LM canola samples. The LM canola samples were subjected to protein and DNA based analysis. PCR analyses using approved 5 single event primers (T45, MS8, RT73, Rf3 and Topas 19-2) revealed that two crops were glyphosate-resistant LM canolas, and four were glufosinate-resistant LM canolas. This study suggested that environmental monitoring is a useful research tool to manage LM crops unintentionally introduced into the environment in South Korea. This result can be used as a basis for future post-management of canola crops.

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the International Convention on the Control of Ships' Air Pollutants and Discharge as it became interested in environmental issues such as global warming and air pollution. In addition, a special bill on the improvement of air quality, including in port areas, has recently been enacted in Korea to reduce the amount of fine dust generated. As part of such fine dust reduction measures, feasibility studies have been underway on converting diesel engines into battery electric propulsion systems that do not cause fine dust and emissions. Since the battery electric propulsion system can easily utilize renewable energy sources, and does not generate exhaust gas due to combustion of fuel, small coastal ferries with battery electric propulsion systems that use renewable energy have been operating in Europe and the U.S. for several years. However, they have not been introduced in Korea. Therefore, in this study, we selected small coastal ferries in Korea as target ferries, and performed simulations to study the applicability of electric propulsion with batteries linked to solar power systems. Based on the results, we want to confirm the applicability of battery electric propulsion.

  • A Study for the relation between design parameters in conceptual stage and freight cost in operation of ocean-going bulk carrier was presented by economic criterial. Ship design procedure was followed to traditional method and programmed. The measure of merit is the Required Freight Rate(RFR). Parametric method used insteady of optimization technique due to easy to illustrate the results. Calculation results to the relation ship dimension, speed and operating cost in this paper show the influence of oil price is very important. Particularly, when oil price estimated as go up, owner choose a ship which lengh is long , breadth/draft is near 2.0 and speed is low. This program is useful for shipyard, consultant officer and owner all together.

Setting Time and Strength of Slip-form Method Applied Caisson in Low-temperature Period (슬립폼공법 적용된 동절기 케이슨의 온도에 따른 응결시간 및 압축강도)

  • In the harbor construction work, caisson is made by slip-form method and curing temperature of caisson concrete need heating in the low-temperature. To get the setting time and compression strength of slip-form method applied caisson at various curing temperature. The curing temperature is divided to the temperature of slip-form and the temperature of second curing curtain. In consideration of setting time, compression strength of concrete and form-removal time, the best temperature is $25^{\circ}C$ at 6 hours slip-form curing time.

  • Most marine structures are constructed on very soft soil, soil improvements are needed for the area of road, buildings. In this paper, some considerations of several case studies on soil placement method after geotextile placement, known as surface treatment, are done. Considerations of strength applicability on the advanced construction method of sand and soil placement are proposed in this paper. Typical tensile strength of geotextile used in the surface soil stabilization method is 15t/m, and thickness of sand and soil placement between 1.6m and 3.1m. Undrained shear strength of soft clay layer ranges $0.2{\sim}1.2t/m^2$. In order to minimize the difficulties which include soil disturbance, soft soil gush and overturn of vertical drain installation rig more studies are needed.

  • This paper introduces a new method of improvement for marine soft ground, MLPP (Marine large Pack Pile). The MLPP is a reinforcement technique far the conventional SCP or GCP piles by confining them with geotextile pack. A pilot project at Busan New Port site and laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate the settlement reduction and bearing capacity enhancement effect of pack pile. The results of field and laboratory tests show that MLPP method can be a safe and economic alternative method for SCP and GCP.

  • Activation products generated by photoneutrons in concrete shielding wall around electron linac were estimated for a high energy X-ray container cargo inspection system. Monte carlo code, MCNPX2.5.0 was used for reference system of 9MeV fixed type dual-direction container cargo inspection system installed at major harbors in Korea. Activation products inventory generated by photoneutron (n,$\gamma$) reaction are estimated, and then radiation dose rate is calculated from the results.

Detection and environmental unintentional release monitoring of living modified maize (Zea mays L.) in Gyeonggi-do of South Korea in 2014 (2014년 경기지역 유전자변형 옥수수 모니터링 및 발견현황)

  • In South Korea, LM crops are not allowed to grow locally, but have been allowed to be imported as food and feed purposes. Currently, the typical LMO imports are continuously increasing in the region of South Korea. In 2014, we carried out a review of the environmental release monitoring of LM maize (Zea mays L.) in Gyeonggi-do of South Korea, and analyzed volunteer samples using strip test kits and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods. We thereby collected 44 volunteers of released LM maize in 169 locations around ports, from roadsides, feed factories and stockbreeding farmhouses. We found 4 positive samples at 3 sites using strip test kits. Based on the PCR analysis, the LM maize plants were found using event-specific primers. These results suggested that our monitoring is necessary to detect the presence of released LM maize in the natural environment of South Korea.

A Study on Liquefaction Assessment of Moderate Earthquake Region concerning Earthquake Magnitude of Korea (국내 지진규모를 고려한 중진 지역에서의 액상화 평가방법에 관한 연구)

  • Conventional methods for the assessment of liquefaction potential were primary for severe earthquake regions $(M{\geq}7.5)$ such as North America and Japan. In Korea, an earthquake related research has started in 1997, but most contents in the guidelines were still quoted from literature reviews of North America and Japan, which are located in strong earthquake region. Those are not proper in a moderate earthquake regions including Korea. Also the equivalent uniform stress concept (Seed & Idriss, 1971) using regular sinusoidal loading which is used, in a conventional method for the assessment of liquefaction potential, can't reflect correctly the dynamic characteristics of real irregular earthquake motions. In this study, cyclic triaxial tests using irregular earthquake motions are performed with different earthquake magnitudes, relative densities, and fines contents. Assessment of liquefaction potential in moderate earthquake regions is discussed based on various laboratory test results. From the results, screening limits in seismic design were re-investigated and proposed using normalized maximum stress ratios under real irregular earthquake motions. Also from the tests using constant wedge loading and incremental wedge loading, the characteristics of liquefaction resistance of saturated sand under irregular ground motions are investigated.

A Study on the Evaluation Index of Crown Height given Marine Environmental Factors and Ship Characteristics (해상 환경 및 선박 특성을 반영한 마루높이 평가지표에 관한 연구)

  • Korea has recently selected twenty-two ports for reinforcement breakwater installation of protection facilities, due to rise sea level caused by global warming and increase in the number of typhoon and tsunami. In addition, due to consistent enlargement of ship size, dredging for depth of water for large vessel's berthing and enlargement of berth is under construction. However, no definite construction plan for the reinforcement and lengthening of crown height, which has close relationship with the safe mooring of ships. In this study, domestic and foreign design criteria of crown height were analyzed, and the crown height evaluation index and evaluation method were developed by dividing it into environment and ship elements. In particular, in the case of ship evaluation index, each step was set up in 4 steps according to domestic and foreign regulations, weighted by each step, and the safety level of crown height was evaluated. As a result of the mooring safety simulation of the 100,000 ton cruise ship, the appropriate minimum crown height standard was derived to be 3 m above A.H.H.W. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data to propose the crown height standard reflecting ship characteristics.
