A vacuum cleaner is the widely used home equipment. However, it has a trouble with too much power consumption. Most losses occur at the centrifugal fan. To remedy this trouble the investigation of motor, which is the main component of vacuum cleaner, is required. The flow characteristics around the high-speed rotating centrifugal fan which is influenced by the very low inlet pressure is quite different from a commonly used fan. Hence it is quite difficult to analyze the flow by the experimental means or by the numerical simulation. In this research, it is aimed to improve the air-suction performance of a vacuum cleaner through the flow analysis around a motor. The efficiency of the centrifugal fan is affected by blade shape, blade number, blade pitch, etc. The influence of the shape of impeller on the flow is investigated in this study. The flow around the centrifugal fan is simulated by applying the moving mesh. To verify the validity of the computation results, the air flow rate and the pressure field to the cleaner is compared with the experimental data. All simulations are performed by using commercial code SC/Tetra. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental ones and it is believed to be promising to use computational simulation in the improvement of the vacuum cleaner performance.
Since groundwater flow in fractured rocks is controlled by the distribution of fractures irregu1arly developed in space, it is not possible to understand the hydraulic characteristics of fractured aquifers using Theis equation which is applicable only to homogeneous isotropic confined aquifer. This study deals with the theoretical background of the fractal groundwater flow model with leakage, the methodology of calculation of the hydraulic parameters, and the application of the developed model to field data. From the result of the application of the fractal model to two field data in Hongcheon and Yusung areas, we obtained a good match between theoretical curves and observed curves, with the same hydraulic parameters at the pumping well and the observation well. In the two pumping test analyses, we have determined 1.9 of the fractal dimension. This means that the dimension of groundwater flow at these two sites is slightly smaller than radial flow.

This paper deals with the procedure for developing a computer program which can predict the pressure fluctuation on the ship hull by solving the boundary value problem on the hull subject to the influence of the unsteady propeller and cavity motions. The program is applied to the solution of flow around a sphere under the influence of point sources simulating the propeller cavity, and then is compared with the analytic solution based on Butler's sphere theorem. The effect of free surface condition, either pressure-free or rigid-wall, upon the pressure distribution is studied. The computer code is also applied to a RO-RO ship, leading to the conclusion that the package may be useful for the analysis of excitation forces on the ship hull induced by the propeller in the design process.

As a computer has been continuously progressed to reduce R&D time and cost, the study of the flow physics has been significantly relied on the numerical method. Recently, Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been widely used in CFD community to accurately capture the turbulent flows. The LES code requires high accuracy in time, as well as in space. Also, it should have strong robustness to ensure the convergence in various complicated flows. The objective of the present work is to develop a base code for LES simulation, having 2$^{nd}$ order accuracy in time and 4$^{th}$ order accuracy in space. To achieve the present objective, the four-step fractional step method was enhanced by adopting compact Pade'scheme. The standard Smagorinsky model was implemented for the first stage of the present code development. The flows over a cylinder and an airfoil were successfully simulated. and an airfoil were successfully simulated.

The magnetic interaction between elliptic Janus magnetic particles are investigated using a direct simulation method. Each particle is a one-to-one mixture of paramagnetic and nonmagnetic materials. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible Newtonian and nonmagnetic. A uniform magnetic field is applied externally in a horizontal direction. A finite-element-based fictitious domain method is employed to solve the magnetic particulate flow in the creeping flow regime. In the magnetic problem, the magnetic field in the entire domain, including the particles and the fluid, is obtained by solving the governing equation for the magnetic potential. Then, the magnetic forces acting on the particles are calculated via a Maxwell stress tensor formulation. In a single particle problem, it is found that the orientation angle at equilibrium is affected by the aspect ratio of the particle. As for the two-particle interaction, the dynamics and the final conformation of the particles are significantly influenced by the aspect ratio, the orientation, and the spatial positions of the particles. For the given positions of the particles, the fluid flow is also influenced by the orientation of each particle. The self-assembly structure of the particles is not a fixed one, but it varies with the above-mentioned factors.

This study presents the wave run-up height around single and multiple surface-piercing cylinders according to wave period and steepness. In order to simulate 3D incompressible viscous two-phase turbulent flow, the present study employed a volume of fluid (VOF) method with realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model based on commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, "STAR-CCM". The wave periods at model scale were 1.269s and 1.692s for a single cylinder and 1.716s for multiple cylinders. In each case, wave steepness of has 1/30 and 1/16 were used, respectively. Consequently, the results for wave run-up height with regard to wave steepness and period were compared with those of relevant previous experimental studies. The numerical simulation results showed a good qualitative agreement with experiments.

In this study, the lift, drag and moments of the rudder that influences on the maneuvering ships directly has been investigated using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). One of typical ship rudders effecting on the forces and moments is the bow rudders during maneuvering on the sea. Thus, the forces and moments should be investigated for the bow of ship rudder. Among the IFS bow rudder series, the balance IFS 54 BR 15 is used for study. As a turbulent model, standard k-epsilon is applied to this study. The hydrodynamic of the bow rudder, especially lift, drag and moment coefficients are calculated for the different angles of attack. The angles of attack between water flow and rudder are presented in cases including 0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30° and 35°. The results of calculation for those influences on maneuvering performance of ships are compared with the relevant results of the previous experimental studies.

Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the rudder since they play an important role in naval architecture fields. Although some values such as hydrodynamics forces can be measured easily in the towing tanks, it is difficult to obtain the detailed information of the flow fields such as pressure distribution, velocity distribution, vortex generation from experiments. In the present study, the effects of hydrodynamic coefficients and Reynolds number acting on the rudder were studied by using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). Ansys fluent, one of commercial CFD solvers, solves the Navier-Stokes equations and the k-epsilon turbulence model is selected for the viscous model to solve RANS equations. At first, drag coefficients and lift coefficient for different angle of attack are obtained by using a CFD commercial code for KCS rudder. Secondly, the 2-D lift coefficients and drag coefficients are compared with 3-D coefficients at the same conditions. Thirdly, the effects of Reynolds number on the hydrodynamic forces are investigated.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of the skin-friction reduction by vortex control. A vortical system such as a horseshoe vortex, a hairpin vortex, and a wake region was induced around a hemisphere attached on a Perspex flat plate in the circulating water channel. Hairpin vortices were developed from the wake region and horseshoe vortices were formed by an adverse pressure gradient in front of the hemisphere. The horseshoe vortices located on the flank of the hemisphere induced a high momentum flow in the wake region by the direction of their vorticity. This process increased the frequency of the hairpin vortices as well as the frictional drag on the surface of the wake region. To reduce the skin-friction drag, suction control in front of the hemisphere was applied through a hole. Flow visualization was performed to optimize the free-stream velocity, size of the hemisphere, and size of the suction hole. Once the wall suction control mitigated the strength of the horseshoe vortex, the energy supplied to the wake region was reduced, causing the frequency of the hairpin vortex generation to decrease by 36.4 %. In addition, the change in the skin-friction drag, which was measured with a dynamometer connected to a plate in the wake region, also decreased by 2.3 %.
Studies of the seed production of Urechis unicinctus were conducted under the laboratory conditions to obtain some information for the U.unicinitus culture. The experiment included developmental studies of the egg development, larval culture, sediment preference and growth of young U.unicinctus. The experiment were conducted from March to August, 2000. The adults of U.unicinctus collected in Namhae-do, Korea. The developments of the fertilized eggs were observed under a light-microscope at intervals of one hour after containing with density of one individual per 1 $m\ell$. The larvae were fed with Phaeodactylum tricornutum cultured at the laboratory. The concentration of the phytoplankton for the feed was 30,000 cells per individual larva. With progress of development, the food concentration was gradually increased, up to 10,000 cells per individual for the young U.unicinctus. Trochophore larvae appeared on the 68 hours after hatching. On the 32 days after hatching, over 50% of fertilized eggs developed into young U.unicinctus. In order to investigate the effect of sediment on the growth and burrowing of U.unicinctus, the young worms were reared in tanks with different grain sizes. The highest value of sediment preference and survival rate of U.unicinctus was shown in the mixture sediment group with below 0.10 mm, 1.01∼12.00 mm, over 3.01 mm and shell. The lowest value in both sediment preference and survival rate of U.unicinctus was observed in 1.0l∼2.00 mm grain size.
