In this study, the flow field and the recirculation phenomena are investigated numerically for the model around a tunnel entrance and exit. It turns out that the air entering to the tunnel entrance comes mostly from the upper region of the entrance implying that maintaining the air clear in that region is important for the inside-tunnel ventilation. We also found that the recirculation of the exhaust gas from the exit to the entrance has a maximum effect when the flow velocity at the exit is somewhat lower than that of the entrance.
A supersonic inlet at angle of attack has anti-symmetric pressure distribution, and it can make flow instability and structural problem. In this study, numerical analysis of three-dimensional inviscid flow was conducted under various throttle ratio and angle of attack conditions. Throttle ratio was defined as the ratio of the exit area to the smallest cross section area at inlet, and the ratio is controlled from 0 to 2.42. At various angle of attack, the characteristics of steady and unsteady flow around supersonic inlet is observed under different throttling ratios. From these results, pressure recovery curves and pressure history curves were plotted by post processing. Using pressure history data, FFT analysis is also carried out. Through these processes, it shows the tendency of pressure distribution anti-symmetricity and changing dominant frequency as increasing angle of attack.
In general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank, is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, may introduce air into pump, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. Uneven flow distribution can also increase or decrease the power consumption with a change in total developed head. To avoid these sump problems pump station designers are considered intake structure dimensions, such as approaching upstream, baffle size, sump width, width of pump cell and so on. From this background, flow characteristics of intake within sump are Investigated numerically to obtain the optimal sump design data. The sump model is designed in accordance with HI code.
Flow over a sphere is controlled experimentally at $Re=10^5$ using electro-magnetic actuators. The electro-magnetic actuator developed in this study is composed of the permanent magnet electro-magnet membrane and slot. Eight actuators are placed inside the sphere at equally spaced intervals on a latitudinal plane and the position of the control slot is 76 from the stagnation point. Each actuator generates a periodic blowing and suction through the slot at variable frequencies of $10{\sim}140Hz$ and variable amplitudes by controlling electric signals applied to the electro-magnet. Drag on the sphere measured using a load cell is significantly reduced with control at the forcing frequencies larger than the natural shedding frequency $({\approx}14Hz\;at\;Re=10^5)$, whereas drag is slightly increased at the forcing frequency of 10Hz. It is shown from pressure measurement that the static pressure in the rear surface of the sphere is significantly increased with control, indicating that the separation is delayed due to control. Flow visualizations also show that the detaching shear layer is more attracted to the sphere center with control, the separation bubble size is significantly reduced, and motion inside the bubble is very weak, as compared to the case of uncontrolled flow.
In the present study, we reduce the drag and lift fluctuations of the sphere by providing a linear proportional control. For this purpose, we measure the radial velocity along the centerline in the wake and provide blowing and suction at a part of sphere surface based on the measured velocity. Zero-net mass flow rate is satisfied during the control. This control is applied to the flow over a sphere at Re=300 and 425. We vary the sensing location at $0.8d{\leq}X_s{\leq}1.3d$ and find that the most effective sensing region coincides with the location at which minimum correlation between the lift and sensing-velocity directions occurs. As a result, the lift and drag fluctuations are significantly reduced.
The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated in a streamwise meridian plane using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5,300 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel at Re=7,400. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. In addition, the mean flow pattern extracted by particle tracing method in water tunnel at Re= 14,500 reveals two distinct comparable toroidal(not closed) vortices in the recirculation region. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique demonstrates the detailed wake configuration of close symmetric recirculation and near-wake configuration with two toroidal vortices, reversed velocity zone and vorticity contours.
The objective of this study is to get simulation data about pulsatile flow around an interior solid body inside a bifurcated tube. All the processes were based on CFD method, with a commercial FVM code, SC/Tetra ver. 6.0 for solving, and with CATIA R16 for generating geometries. The bifurcated tube models were drawn with the bifurcated angle of 45 degrees, considering Murray's law about the diameter ratio. With various locations of the object, the effects of flow on the drag were considered. For the pulsating flow condition, the velocity wave profile was given as the inlet boundary condition. To validate all the result, the simulation was compared with the existing data of the other papers first. Overall flow field of both data were similar, but there was some difference at a zero velocity. Therefore the next simulation was continued with the sine wave profiles where there is no negative flow, and then the data was compared with one of the pulmonary artery velocity where there is negative flow. The final process was to calculate flow variables such as the wall shear stress (WSS) and to compute the drag of the solid object.
A hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary code is expanded to simulate flow field around a three-dimensional body which undergoes large dynamic deformation. Immersed boundary nodes are automatically distributed based on the edges crossing triangles on body boundary. Velocity vectors are reconstructed at those immersed boundary nodes along local normal lines to the boundary. The reconstruction of pressure is avoided using the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid method. The developed code is validated through comparisons with other results on laminar flow over a sphere. The code is applied to simulate flow around a foil which is attached to a body of revolution and rotates under periodic deformation. The periodic variation of the tip vortex is observed and the effects of the deformation on hydrodynamic force acting on the body are investigated.
